A few of you have jumped on and pointed out that if you shoot in RAW, even if you are shooting BW you will retain all the colour info. Of course you're right, and I hope these tips help you. I think the question came from an Instagrammer who is likely shooting in jpg, so the answer is geared towards those who don't shoot RAW for Instagram. I'm actually one of them. I only have a 16GB iPhone which always seems to be too full, so shooting and editing jpg from my X100 is a workflow which works well for me. RAW is saved for my professional work.
Sean Tucker i have been using snapseed for like, 8 months, but never knew i could have so much control using colour sliders. Beautiful and easy explanation. Now i understand the hsl slider use. Thank you!
Hi there .... great video. Not sure if anyone else has pointed this out to you but in SnapSeed you do have slider control on the black and white colour filters. Just choose the filter and then move your finger left or right on the image. Thanks again, great info!
I keep going back to this video. Simply: THANK YOU!! I had the pleasure to start shooting with a real red filter... That really taught me how to handle it. So much easier now
This video opened the door to a whole new B&W view for me that I never knew existed. At least that gave me the confidence to where I could create it. Thank you so much
Thanks, Sean. I've always wanted to learn how to properly use the black and white tools in Snapseed to create dramatic black and white shots from colour photos. Your tutorial made a lot of sense.
I am just playing around with lightroom and sliding back saturation and then trying to use HSL sliders has no effect, however clicking B & W and then using the HSL sliders works the same as shown with the app here, this is in raw by the way and as is already said, all colour info is retained....enjoyed the tips given in this vid.......thanks Sean.
Interesting . I tend to use Snapseed to achieve similar effects . Both appear great tools and invaluable for most of us processing our digital images and posting them on social media or producing photo books. Thanks for showing us your processes
Honestly, you are so right about quality. I mean you are my favourite photography youtuber. You don't upload often, but every video feels like a work of art. Exquisite content. Love it!!!
Hey Sean! Excellent info! You're fascinated by cine so you probably know this... You mentioned that they used to use colour filters in black n white photography. Back in the Black & White MOVIE days, they used to use red filters in order to mimic NIGHTTIME scenes while actually shooting during daytime. This allowed actors and crew to still see what the heck they were doing AND to NOT have the film end up too grainy. John Ford used this technique a lot in his B&W westerns. So, with playing with red sliders AND exposure, one can mimic (a bit) nighttime shots taken during daytime. This process has the name "day for night". (Once they started switching to colour film they scrambled to use new techniques, like using tungsten film in daylight, lowering exposure and using blue filters... but that's a different subject.)
If you're interested in that you should check out the recent film ,'The Lighthouse' where they used a cyan filter to turn red hues dark, making the skin grainy and craggy, and turning blood as black as oil. Very clever stuff.
@@seantuck OH MY GAWD, Sean... I'd seen the trailer last fall and when I realized that Defoe was the dark face (SO ortho!) I was staring at I thought "I've GOT to see this" but then before I knew it a few months had passed and COVID happened! Welp... sure enough, I've GOT to find it and watch it!!! I LOVE old Hollywood hard, incandescent lighting. And, looking at the trailer again NOW, you're right... the tones, the grain and the ortho look are gorgeous! BTW... google the heck out of "Saturday Night at the Movies" hosted by "Elwy Yost". This is what I watched every Saturday all through my impressionable teens. When other people shy away from "old, boring, colourless Black & White" I'll be there! I grew up with "A Christmas Carol" (Alastair Sim version) in B&W. When the colourized version came along, I HAD to turn down the colour in order to watch it! LOL Cheers!
Fantastic video tutorial Sean. I am really into my black and white images lately and although I have a similar workflow you have given me some extra tips which I'm sure will help my edits. Really enjoyed this video, thank you again!
Great, very clear, concise and helpful video. Yes, please, please do one on color processing as well - especially the aspect of keeping consistency you've mentioned is really interesting for me. I usually end up with results I like (using Snapseed), but they are not all that consistent. Thanks!
You CAN use sliders to manipulate colors in Snapseed. Just slide your finger over the screen left to right or right to left after selecting the color in the B&W module.
Very nice. I shoot monochrome JPGs only (my Olympus cameras let me adjust Highlights/Mids/Shadows curves, and apply R/O/Y/G filters before I press the shutter). That way I see what I will get.
Sean love your tutorial style so a tutorial on colour grading would be great - especially in lightroom. I also want to know whether it is worth paying for colour presets and how easy is it to make your own?
I enjoyed the video and learning about Darkroom; I use Snapseed on my iphone as well. As always your video is well produced and pleasing. Your artful and philosophical discussions about photography, printing, creativity is your strongest card; I hope you will continue inspiring your viewers with your gift. Didn't mind the ad; may look at Squarespace today! Thank you for all you do.
On the fuji x (don't own the others) you can do this in-camera. Of course the By or Br and Acros filter modes. But also, you can set an extreme white balance which is taken into bw. Even custom balance of coloured objects and the wb shifts to extremes. This way is more control obviously but I got into that learning about 'ortho' film and gives some effects whilst shooting. Maybe I will add RAW and try this too. Good thing about that is don't even need a RAW converter, I can export via camera to default settings too.
But if you apply it in camera you are just using an onboard preset which will work for some images and not for others. Editing custom in post means you have a ton more control.
I use the curves from Snapseed on android, works fine! Was waiting for this one by the way, great video and nice squarespace add, not annoying at all, simple as your usual style ☺
Interestingly, I believe that B&W imagery AUTOMATICALLY invokes in the brain a sense that "THIS is ACTUALLY photographic ART" that we don't get automatically from a colour image. I would LOVE to get my hands on a "Leica M Monochrom" which has no RGB coloured-filter-dot array over the sensor.
Thanks for this Sean - have been working with tone curves but the subtle difference the HSL makes will take it to the next level. 👏

Great video, sir. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and revealing the true potential of these apps. I've never thought I could use Snapseed more precisely than just using its filters. Quite helpful!
Great vid as always. Keep up the fantastic work. Would love to see you colour process. Also, how about a discussion or commentary on photos/artists you like? Famous or not well known it doesn't matterI. I imagine your style, honesty and thoughtfulness would work a treat with your audience.
Cool that you used Snapseed too as that's what i edit all my phone photos with (I'm doing the 365 project so i'm shooting everything digital on my phone, as i predominately shoot film) and i sometimes miss the "punch" in black and white.
I'd really love to see how you process colors! So please make another tutorial like this for the color version. Love this video so much, simple yet informative! Keep up your work, Sean!
Thanks for the tips, Sean! I love the creative color (or lack of) and compositions of your videos. The way you did the iPhone shots with the color, zoomed in view on the right and you yourself doing the actions on the left is just awesome. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for these wonderfully useful techniques. Gave me a lot more understanding in 10 minutes than I've had in years of casually editing with digital tools. I'd also love to see a video on color grading techniques. Hope there's enough interest for that.
My apologies. Lying flat on my back, with a fractured spine, navigating my computer is a tad challenging. But your videos are inspiring me to improve my skills as soon as I recover.
Another exceptional video thanks Sean! Yes please, of course we'd love to see your color editing process! Your incredible eye for composition is something I'd love to hear about too, how you go from walking around the streets to framing up - that part of the process. I've been walking around a lot looking for photo opportunities, even more since you suggested in a video to walk more and ride less - and sometimes I see something cool but can't seem to get the right fit in the frame like you would. Keep up the great work!
Thanks Sean. I do enjoy your insight into the technical side of photography but I kind of miss your "message" that you are so good at sharing (preaching). The Book (camera) According to Sean. Wish you would smile a bit more, you are a very serious person and for good reason but a simple grin or smile might draw more viewers in. As always thanks and can't wait for next weeks mass.
Sir, in many of your photos, especially in the B&W photos there are brilliant sunbeams captured which increases the drama vigorously. Would you please tell us in a video how to capture the sunbeams/lights in a dslr? It'd be an immense help !
Hello, I am curious about one thing. How do you edit your images(colour and BW) so that they have that clean look. It is hard to describe, but they look so crystal clear and sharp. Amazing.

Stelios Kapet yes mate. I know. Thanks.

And your videos and photos are great of course.
This video opened the door to a whole new B&W view for me that I never knew existed. At least that gave me the confidence to where I could create it. Thank you so much
This is the best black and white tutorial I've ever watched😍😍
I have learned more in this short video than many other tutorials for both applications. Thank you.
Thanks, Sean. I've always wanted to learn how to properly use the black and white tools in Snapseed to create dramatic black and white shots from colour photos. Your tutorial made a lot of sense.
Just a beautiful channel. So happy to have found this.
Welcome:)
The more I see your pictures and videos more i love your work! Very professional. Congratulations
Thank you for this tutorial, it has increased my understanding of how to use curves.

thanks man! I had the same problem :)
Kasper Habtie pleased that I have been able to help

Thank you for the video Sean. You have a very natural way of explaining things and I can tell you have a passion for photography.
Thanks Sean. Great video.
You´ve helped me so much to understand how to edit more than use presets. Thank you!
Love how you explain everything in detail. Makes a novice like myself keen to try these techniques
Hi Sean. Yes, a colours tutorial would be very welcome. Thanks and keep up the good work.
Very nicely done, Sean. Well explained with clear, easy to comprehend examples. 5 Stars!

I just learn this idea and I'm taking Amazing black and white photographs just on my Track phone!👍🙂
Very very helpful. Thank you Sean!
I would like to see a video on your color grading workflow. I'm wondering if any of these same b&w techniques would have a similar effect?
I second that. :)
Editing images in color. Yes, please!
Your video is very helpful! Thank you so much! From a hobby photographer from South Korea
You are a Genius Sean.
Fantastic video tutorial Sean.

Really enjoyed this video, thank you again!
This was an excellent tutorial... used it with snapseed.... great help thank you.
Very nice pictures from Warsaw. 😉👍👍👍👍👍
Very helpful video! I've whatched a few other videos on the same topic, but here I learnt the most!
Great, very clear, concise and helpful video.
Yes, please, please do one on color processing as well - especially the aspect of keeping consistency you've mentioned is really interesting for me. I usually end up with results I like (using Snapseed), but they are not all that consistent. Thanks!
Great channel Sean, by far one of my favourites on UA-cam
Just began using Darkroom and making B&W per your video. App very intuitive! Thanks!
You CAN use sliders to manipulate colors in Snapseed. Just slide your finger over the screen left to right or right to left after selecting the color in the B&W module.

It’s there waiting for you to watch:)
Sean love your tutorial style so a tutorial on colour grading would be great - especially in lightroom. I also want to know whether it is worth paying for colour presets and how easy is it to make your own?
Great information that I can use on my photography journey. I watched this video twice.
Easy and powerful. Thanks Sean.
Thanks, very practical as ever, with clear explanation
