  • In this video, I'll share my cycling transformation and how cycling has changed my body. I'll look at how I transitioned from weight training into cycling and how I went from riding 6 miles to 131 miles.
    Many of us use cycling as a tool to lose weight, and I'll tell you something for free, it's a damn good tool. I'll cover my experience and how cycling changes your body. On the flip side, I'll also look at how to adapt to these changes.
    Cycling has many positive effects on the body and as your body changes, you need to adapt accordingly. I'll discuss my biggest takeaways from my experience in the saddle and what I experienced over my 1-year cycling journey.
    I wouldn't say that cycling saved me, I'd say that cycling gave me a new lease of life and a new way to reach better fitness and wellbeing.

    When I was 18 years old I got my first full time job as a professional bike messenger. I did this for 8 years. All year round, in all weather. No one ever told me I was wasting my life at this job, but let's face it, it's not a job that will take you anywhere career wise. I'm now 50 years old and still riding between 5000km-8000km a year. I've come to realise that maybe I wasn't wasting my time at that job but actually quite the opposite. The level of fitness I have achieved through riding my bike throughout my life is amazing. I feel different. I feel hot wired or someting. It's difficult to expalin unless you're a full time athlete. Without realizig it at 18 years old I have built a fortress against diseases and general illnesses. I'm 50 years old now but I feel 30. I have no wrinkles, full head of hair and my mental state kicks ass. If I could live my life over again I wouldn't change a thing. Too many people put money first before anything else. I'm not saying that everyone should ride a bike like an insane maniac for 30 years but it's crucial to exercise. This sedintary lifestyle I see the majority of the poluation living is dangerous. I encourage all of my friends and family members who are young to start now. Build that fortress.

      @@ravenilcorvo3218 I think I just love to ride my bike. I get enough friendly competition on the road with other riders. Also I didn’t really have the time or money. Great story! Truly inspirational and, amazingly, mirroring my own experiences. Know exactly the conflict of going to the gym and cycling. I was a reasonably competent cyclist until I fractured a shoulder last September at the gym. 6 months of laying about and an extra four inches around my belly is really making it hard to pull back to where I was.

    Awesome video. I’m 36, skinny fat but stay in the gym... I just had the urge to start spin. I did my first class the day before yesterday and I’m hooked. I got an amazing high after lol. My booty is a bit sore from the seat tho... I’ll bring a padded seat cover next time. Like you I only lift weights because I’m trying to put on mass... it’s difficult to try to eat to build that muscle yet try to stay lean. I always have trouble in the mid section. But anyway... I’m going to listen to my body and do some cycling. I definitely will need to figure out a way to keep leg and back day in the gym tho. Cheers to new fitness experiments!

      "skinny fat" - This is often a term that I use to describe my body type 🤣
      Good to hear that you joined the spin class and are enjoying it. How are you finding them a few weeks on? Padded short/seat cover are the first thing I would buy... it get uncomfortable pretty quickly.
      As you have said it is a hard balance between cycling and the gym. One person commented on this video and said that in the winter they do more weight training and in the summer the focus more on cycling. I quite like the thought of this as the miles naturally drop as the weather gets worse. So build up strength and power in the winter, then start pushing the miles in the summer.
      Good luck with your fitness journey. As you said... listen to the body!!

    good story, some overlap with me, commuted ~100KM per week, was going to the gym and in the summer built up to a single 125km ride (wicklow mountains Ireland). this year no commuting, been doing a 40km ride once a week since xmas, about a month ago got the notion to time my ride, not done that before and been beating the time. will start doing mid week rides as the weather gets better and do longer untimed rides. My main problem in the past was being under trained for the long rides, so hoping I can do a more linear progression this year.
    I got one question, my instinct says push my 40KM (with hills) ride for time to increase power as I build up distance rides between now and summer? so through May my weekly routine should be, one 40KM for time, one ~90min ride with a tough hill climb and a weekend ~75KM in the mountains. As I mentioned my main goal is to finish the long rides strong so I can enjoy the thing.

      Hey friend! Thanks for your comment. Investing to hear that you have had a similar journey to me 👍🏽
      Firstly, good job getting out on the bike, the more time that you spend in the saddle more the more you will improve, that's the simple equation anyway 😁
      From your whole message I picked up on one key point "my instinct says". Your instinct is coming from the feedback from your body, so if you feel like pushing faster then I would say push harder. Sometimes it really is that simple, although everything you read online will tell you otherwise. The harder you push and fitter you get, the better you recover, so more often you can ride. It's kind of an endless cycle, if you want to constantly improve then the ends of your rides will always be a little difficult.
      Secondly, I would focus on diet, you mention and increase in power, a key stat to look at would be the power to weight ratio, a great diest can help improve that figure. If your diet is spot on, then cracking job, it's often the hardest part to get right.
      Finally, do what you feel. One of the hardest things is to stay motivated, so if you do what you want to do then you are more likely to keep pushing the miles 👍🏽 - Keep me updated on your journey with the odd comment here and there.
      Safe riding, mate!!

    Mine is a similar in so many ways but after 2200 km cycling without losing weight i focused on intermittent fasting plus keto diet dropping over 8 kg in 2 months while cycling even more. Bought my Specialized Sirrus Elite Carbon Fiber bike only a few months before the pandemic hit us. I can even run further and faster beyond 6 km alternate days and do 20 chin-ups which was impossible before.

      Hey Greydon! That's awesome to hear that you have found a winning formula for your body! Diet is key... and probably one of the hardest things to get right. It also requires a more will power for the average individual. I've always been strict with my diet so I'm doing ok on that front currently.

    As much as I do love my hybrid for its durability and reliability, buying my entry level road bike was just as good of an investment. I’m just a casual rider, don’t even use clips, but even now I notice how much faster and efficient the road bike is, barring one very steep climb that always winds me (just gotta keep doing it, I suppose). Oh and since it’s a budget road bike, I don’t feel too bad thrashing it like my hybrid (with some limits).

    How do you measure power to weight?

    • @JourdainColeman
      @JourdainColeman  3 роки тому

      For the power to weight measurement you need to know your FTP and your Weight.
      You can find out your FTP (functional threshold power) but doing and FTP test on a smart trainer. Let's say that's 250
      Then your weight, in my case 82kg
      You then divide your FTP by your weight. so 250 / 82 = 3.04.
      So my power to weight ratio would be 3.04 Watts per kilogram
      I hope that helps 👍🏽

    • @JourdainColeman
      @JourdainColeman  3 роки тому

      Hey Paul, thanks for commenting.
      I didn't notice any back pain changing from flat bars to drop bars. But this will depend on the bike you get and your position. My Giant Defy is an "Adventure" road bike, so the position is relatively upright.
      If anything, you are actually better balanced on the bike. There is a more equal spread of your weight across your ass and your hands. I found the pressure on my ass reduced for that reason.
      I hope that info helps 👍🏽

      Hey Alvarez! Thanks for your comment. That's a hard question to answer. It would depend on the level that you are starting from. Your fitness will also be affected by other factors such as your diet. I would say, do what is comfortable for you to get your body nothing initially, nothing overly strenuous. Then build up your training based on how you feel and how your body feels.

      Start with 10k and add 10% each day. Listen to your body when you hit your limit. Recovery ❤️‍🩹 is key 🔑. Doing it every day will really add up over time so take a day off now and then. To lose weight and keep fitness eat a high carb low fat diet. Lots of grains, corn, pasta, rice, fruit and vegetables. It’s very important to try to keep fat from food under 10 percent. And eat enough carbs ! Don’t starve yourself! And drink water 💧 a lot of water. Til you pee is almost blank. So far I’ve lost 5 kg on eating as much carbs as I want and getting both fitter and faster and lowering my recovery time. And I’m 50 years old!
