It would have been interesting to see the difference of both flanges with a paint line measurement or the like on new splines. It's not like the drive train of a Landy has any tight tolerances anywhere lol. But it's how the teeth mesh together under load is what will determine long service, and how clean it's kept as any dirt in the grease will turn grease into grinding paste, as I discovered on my farmy resto 300tdi; because a dust cap which appeared to have been damaged from removal had been re used and did not keep the dirt out. The consequent wear compared to the other side required replacing stub, half shaft ect, all for the cost of a cheap plastic dust cap. I have had some parts from Britpart, and they have been very good OEM quality. So I do not believe everything they sell are sub standard. Expensive parts are not always better quality, sometimes they come from the same exact factory, but the price is hiked up to make them seem better IMHO.
Im considering going to the 1 piece HD shafts, to see if they remove the increasingly bad take up clonk. Perhaps that would be an interesting video comparing the pros and cons.
Done that, did make a difference. Used LOF ones. Biggest difference though (on a tdci) was replacing input shaft on transfer box for an Ashcroft version. All free play gone!!
@@gruhwch4876 I'm probably going to go for a lof extreme output shaft at 100k, the last one (not original) let go (without warning) at 75k and I just threw a bluebox one in as I needed it then and there.
Britpart is a Toyota fan boys dream who loves to spend his time mocking Land Rovers on the internet! Most of these crap quality parts are made for making it just past the 1 years warranty and then that’s it.. I honestly think the reason old Land Rovers have problems is down to the fact most of the owners use keep crap quality like Britpart. I won’t use the crap on my old girl and I think it’s proven a good decision over the 25 years of ownership. Once I’ve needed to be recovered back when a Britpart clutch exploded on me.. I ordered a heavy duty clutch and when it arrived it was in the dreaded blue box and the landy was apart so I just went with it…never again!
I had simular with a timing chain - act of desperation as the old one had snapped and I needed it back on the road emedately and thats all I could get (2.25 diesel, only needed a chain and 4 push rods). 10k miles later it had lost a lot of power with signs of very retarded timing. The chain was streched way beyond the auto ajuster and one side of the duplex chain had a broken link so cought just in time. Bought an AE branded one. They need servicing like a 1950’s car especially if used in a harsh environment and the old carb and points petrols suffer the same issues as any old carb and points car does (ie worse than when new due to crap parts) but keep on top of it and they are dependable. I’m not convinced the genuine parts are as quality is they were either as they are no longer doing big warantees on new vehicles and are shipping production to cheeper places with likely lower volumes so I doubt they dedicate the same time they used to to QC.
@@gs188 nothings the same quality anymore mate! Not a quick job replacing a timing chain on a 2.25 either.. I’ve never known one to snap personally but I remember replacing one years back when doing my apprenticeship. The 2.25 diesel was fitted in some London taxis for a period and I think I recall them having problem with them stretching because of the drivers leaving them to idle with low oil pressure. Anyway, my 3 main things I’ve always stood by with Land Rovers is keep them clean and dirt free, always service them with good quality parts and drive them like a Land Rover should be driven..
Thanks mate!! Shows how stupid LR are as a company... make sensibly priced parts available and we would all buy them, make them stupidly priced and we on;t give LR any money and the reputation of their product goes down. Ho hum... best 4x4 sold by the stupidest company to ever sell vehicles?
My guess is LR don't want people driving their vehicles that are 10, 20, ..60+ years old. They would rather sell you a new one every 3 years so try to make them uneconomical to maintain.
The cost is nothing to do with the manufacturing cost, it’s due with the fact it’s a part that has not been manufactured since about 2016 (or when ever they stopped making them), there’s a limited number available so carries a premium and has to cover the cost of storage…
Not sure they dont want old defenders on the road - its still the main image of off road performance they have as a brand and free advertising they still trade off. I think its more that they just dont care as people will drive the trucks regardless. They also obveously have quality issues on their current models so arent going to spend much on checking their classic parts which dont sell in volumes anyway since they have also applied their “exclusive luxury” pricing model to them - at that price its cheeper to get a CNC billet flange made in the UK from real metal. I think a lot of their genuine parts now sell to the collector restoration market who dont really use the vehicles so poor quality isnt noticed but they’d want genuine parts. You can make a LR axle pritty strong and durable the genuine parts isnt the way to go.
For the record, I am not a Britpart fan. However, the real problem here is that enough people would rather go cheap than pay for quality parts. If the entire community decided not to hse Britpart, they would have to reconsider the quality. But, it appears people are willing to buy two cheap flanges for the price of one OEM one.
Who supplies OEM parts please and how to avoid getting sent Britpart? Thanks
Holy moly £243 for a drive member?? Weren’t these £40 just a few years ago ?

My Ashcroft flanges were so tight on new Ashcroft halfshafts i had to put them in the oven for a bit.
Take a look at the Mahker billet Flanges…
i had this same experience... the was solved by "HD terra firma" - worked perfectly/like a glove
Dear Mr Land Rover... That is not a £240+ item..... That's why people buy alternatives
The business model of Britpart is laughable where it appears any lengths are gone to in order to continue a poor reputation ?!

To be expected really.

Surprisingly Britpart door hinges for a Defender are tighter than genuine. That's my only good story for Britpart.
Britpart HD drive flanges are no better plus they wear fast!
