My grandma carried an illegal handgun in Philly after my grandpa died. Gun control didn't stop a man from trying to rob her at knife point but it would have gotten her stabbed to death had she obeyed it. My grandmother may have died a "criminal" but she didn't die THAT day.
It's dismaying how many people react to violations of individual rights of honest, peaceful people by seeking to violate the individual rights of honest, peaceful people.
During the 92 L,A riots, there are freight trains that goes through the hood, and there was some freight cars that were left on the tracks, and the residents were going to break inside the freight cars thinking it's TV's or other valuables in there, but when they open up one car, it had hundreds guns in it, in the other car it was thousands of rounds of ammunition, and in the street corners of Chicago, they be finding crates of guns and ammunition as well
Yes, the first gun laws in America were primarily aimed at restricting the rights of Foundational Black Americans, particularly freedmen and enslaved people. These early gun control measures were part of a broader effort to maintain control over the Black population, especially after the abolition of slavery. During slavery, many states in the South had laws that prohibited enslaved Africans from owning or carrying firearms, fearing slave uprisings. After the Civil War and during Reconstruction, these restrictions were extended to newly freed Black people through what are known as Black Codes. The Black Codes were laws passed by Southern states in the late 1860s designed to restrict the freedoms of Black people and maintain a racial hierarchy. One key feature of these codes was the prohibition of firearm ownership by Black people. For example: Mississippi's Black Codes (1865) stated that no freedman "shall keep or carry firearms of any kind, or any ammunition." Louisiana passed laws forbidding Black people from owning firearms without special permission from local authorities. The intent behind these laws was to ensure that Black people could not defend themselves against white supremacist violence or organize politically. This legal disarmament left Black communities vulnerable, especially as groups like the Ku Klux Klan used violence and intimidation to suppress their civil rights. However, the passage of the 14th Amendment and Civil Rights Act of 1866 sought to protect the rights of freedmen, including the right to bear arms. Despite these protections, local and state authorities often found ways to circumvent federal law. The debate over gun control and race has deep historical roots, with efforts to disarm Black people continuing in various forms throughout history, up to the present day. Understanding the origins of gun control in the U.S. reveals its often racially targeted intentions.
Don’t forget the states I the north that had anti black laws and Jim Crowe laws started in the north, there were white only establishments as far north as New Jersey in 1964. The state of Oregon was admitted into the union after the civil war and yet it was illegal by law for blacks to live there.
Look up the origins of California's Mulford Act in 1967. The NRA helped draft gun control legislation to restrict thr Black Panther Party from open carrying.
Maj, l was a history major in college back in the last century, and what you said about the suppressing of Black Americans from owning and bearing firearms is absolutely true. Except for the too short period of Reconstruction after the Civil War, when Union troops were available in some measure to protect the former slaves, almost all states enforced a program of disarmament. The ongoing racism emanates from the "educated" left now. Of course there are and will be pockets of White racism, but l have lived through the Jesus Movement of the 60's (yes, l am that old), and l watched as a broad swath of the old South growing bumber crops of Christians (myself becoming one as well). I went through portions of Georgia, Alabama, and Florida in the 90's, not too far off from the desegregation battles of the 60's, and saw Black Americans in law enforcement uniforms patrolling the streets. Maybe it's not a coincidence that some of the freest places in America for Black ownership of firearms are in these Bible belt states. Anyway, l appreciate your efforts to continue the fight for the 2nd Amendment, which is the bulwark against tyranny for all...all, Americans. Keep up the good work.
