"When even Cristina was blocked by politics." Which is bs, the same should have happened to Meredith. It was just bs story plot writing because it's Meredith Grey who basically gets away with anything.
Mendicant_Bias The_Betrayer for the sake of defending the storyline, I think that Mer was able to get the award because of how Richard confronted Catherine about Cristina. Idk maybe change of rules whenever there was someone really exceptional? There are a lot of genuinely incredible moments in this series. I feel like it is criminally underappreciated. I haven't seen the last few seasons, and I'd say 14 was a bit below the series' standard, but 1-13 are incredible. 14 was still very good, but felt less cohesive.
Funny how many people seem to believe that Ellis is actually right in that scene. I mean, Ellis was indeed an extraodinary surgeon, and how did that work out for her ? Unhappy first marriage, cheated on her husband, got dumped by Richard, abandonned her second child, tried to kill herself, made her daughter life miserable... Does that sound like a fulfilling life to you ? Plus, Meredith is not blindly in love, she's a great intern, a hard worker, and now we know that she grew up to be an amazing surgeon AND managed to keep a perfectly balanced personnal life. Ellis was a great surgeon, but that was all she had and as a human being she is truly despicable.
ThunderCookie101 god that’s what kills me the most!! she seemed eager to talk to her mom, really talk to her for the first time in years, and yet even then she still can’t seem to say the right thing because it’s not what ellis wants to hear. that last shot of her looking crestfallen is so fucking heartbreaking
Geez, Ellis was one of the greatest surgeons that ever existed, facts. But omg, she's a heartless monster. She made Meredith's life a completely mess, she was a cheater on her marriage and she abandoned Maggie. Plus, Meredith just tried to end her life after that since she was just thinking how Ellis could be right when she told that Mer was a waste of space in this world. Ellis has no right to speak like, she was a great surgeon but as a human and as a mother? She sucks!
Honestly giving Maggie up is the only good thing she did. She gave her a better life and Maggie had a family who loved her. Wish she would have done that for her older daughter. Sometimes the greatest love is letting them go.
I can't believe people agreed with Ellis. I guess I disagreed because my mother is similar to Ellis and I knew/felt what Meredith was going through all her life.
It’s called having a narcissistic parent. Ellis doesn’t care about Meredith’s happiness but rather her achievements because Ellis only sees her as an extension of herself.
I agree with Ellis. Meredith knew her mother. It's relativoley disrespectful for her to respond in this way. I think speech is what turned Meredith into a renowned surgeon
It's amazing to me, because Ellis is so many things, but I don't think she was ever really "happy" like Meredith is describing here. Being satisfied with the ordinary is fulfilling in itself. Your worth is not connected to your innovations or contributions to society.
"Your Happy!? How dare you be happy! What's wrong with you girl!!!?? No parent wants to see that daughter happy!" Yes that logic seems ligit! Nice mum.
My mom kind of just gave me the same speech. I've barely been sleeping at all this year because I'm kicking my butt doing homework every minute of every day, and my mom yells at me and says I'll never get into any colleges and I'm throwing away my future. I get all A's, but I had a B on the last report card. I know, I know, I should be doing homework, but I needed this to help me before I get back to work.
Its been 11 years and I really hope that you realized how wrong your mother was. I hope that you are doing something that you love, and not something your mother forced upon you.
I have family members that I no longer speak to because they hurt me far less than this. Ellis is a terrible parent and a terrible person. I don't care how strong the bonds of family are, I refuse to let a person like this ride me down. I would have left and never looked back. Her mother does not deserve one ounce of her time or tenderness.
As cruel and harsh as she probably sounds, this was Ellis' way of raising Meredith. She loves her daughter... but she's just not mother material, this is her way of parenting.
Meredith was really happy when she told her mother about how she found love she was so excited to have a normal conversation about her life with her mother finally ellen was great in that scene they were both great
I think here really she does not want Meredith to be like her relationship wise that is why her demeanour changed when she heard her boyfriend is a doctor

I love this relationship. It is unfortunate Shonda killed Ellis off. When Ellis is telling her to be extraordinary, she's telling Meredith not to be like her. She wants Meredith to be better than her. She just doesn't see being a doting wife and a doting mother as being real goals for her or her daughter. She wants Meredith not... to let a man drive her to cut her wrists for attention. Not to let a man's abundance of ego or low self esteem slow down her growth or make her feel inadequate. I think that's why Meredith becomes so happy when she realizes her mother wasn't really saying you'll never measure up to me but, really, saying "I want you to be better than me" in season 4 (with the therapy). I love that Ellis is not maternal to a dysfunctional degree. It happens. She was career oriented and she had a child by accident with a man she didn't really love. She finds herself left with the kid she didn't really want without the man she didn't really want and with a career that now has that much more obstacles in front of it. Meredith becomes predominantly an obstacle. What I do think is unfortunate was the suicide "attempt" they wrote in. I don't feel Ellis would have ever done that for attention or for real. I love that Meredith could not hate Ellis and low-key worships her despite how messed up Ellis is (as a mother). I imagine there may have been a few moments of near warmth and sometimes a child hangs on to that with a death grip.
I understand both. Yes Meredith got distracted. As a woman you should try to find your career and path first because love indeed gets you distracted. And we can all agree, Derek was not the best for Meredith at first. He completely manipulated her MULTIPLE times (Ellis knew this). Which is why she went off on Derek lol. On the other hand, Meredith needed a Mother. She needed someone to give her motherly love and support but Ellis is a strong surgeon who lacked empathy towards that stuff. It’s just who Ellis is. And this is very upsetting because Meredith did lose a Mother, Lexie’s Mom.
