Photo Adventure - Lighthouse at Sunset

  • Took a last minute trip to capture a lighthouse at sunset. I packed my trusty Nikon D3400 and kit lenses (18-55 and 70-300) and headed north to Lake Michigan. Regardless of your equipment (Nikon, Canon, Sony, crop sensor, full sensor, etc.), you can capture some awesome shots under the right conditions.

    My word...Mark, each one of these shots were stunning!!! Not only you scout the best locations, but how you capture it in your stills and video is just AMAZING! The whole experience of watching your videos is the best thing about Saturdays here and has such a profound de-stressing effect...not to mention the immense educational value. They have helped so many like me connect better with the camera. I used to over-stress on gear before I came across your channel a while back...after that, I know how to work with the limitations of gear I have and have fun.
    You are a great teacher. Thank you for all you do to spread love for photography. :-)

      Thanks for the post/feedback and great to hear from you again!:) I firmly believe a great photograph is not necessarily about the gear, rather it is about the photographer behind the gear:). Grab your camera, head out, capture some memories, and have some fun!:)

      Thanks for the post/feedback Pamela!:) I know what you mean ... I will go for a stretch without shooting and then go back to it for various reasons. The music situation is interesting:). I listen/like all types of music but find a certain style to go well with certain videos. The major challenge to any music is licensing. I discovered J Hacha de Zola on a music site a few years ago and exchanged messages with the group ... gaining their permission to use their music. This becomes a win-win for any artist and I am surprised more artists are not eager to get involved (pushing UA-camrs to use their music). Nonetheless, J Hacha de Zola is awesome with a unique sound. I ran into another band on a video/photo shoot ... they had some solid music but various license agreements prevented free use.

      RealWorld it kinda made me think of that old John Mellencamp song “Little Pink Houses.”
      By the way, I’m still shooting with my T6i, wondering about pulling the trigger on the 90D. 10 FPS interests me, as well as the higher pixel count. I have invested in a couple lenses over the past year: Tamrin 90mm macro (which I absolutely love!) and Tamron 100-400 zoom.
      Any thoughts on the 90D?

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  4 роки тому +1

      Ahhh yes, I recall the song as well!:) Now you have it - a pink house:). I shot with the Canon 80d for a bit and really like it and the 90d is even better ... higher resolution, higher ISO, faster continuous shutter, better battery life, etc. Canon has done a great with AF and video and this camera is no exception IMO:).

    This is really a challenge sometimes, when you go out and wants to take some photos on one hand but to enjoy with your family on the other hand. sometimes I just feel it impossible as I want to concentrate on one thing to get full joy from it . my solution is to take some pictures with my mobile phone and not put too much effort in it. when I want to capture amazing shots , I need to be more dedicated to the process , have my real camera NIKON D500 , with a good lens and usually go solo. indeed this is relaxing and I'm getting a lot from it to my soul.

When bringing the camera gear, I am more focused on the shots and not as much on enjoying the moment. I feel it is important to enjoy the moment and typically go out solo to capture great shots:).

      Thanks for the post/feedback:). I typically use matrix/full metering and typically lock focus about a third to half way out on landscapes. Great Shots! I'm living on a remote island in Northern Australia and am not taking the opportunity to take shots as I should be. I really need to get out and see what I can find.
    I do have a question, and this probably me misunderstanding something but, at the beginning of the video you said you were using the kit lens which implies DX-format. However, in the metadata, you have listed equivalent crop factor focal lengths. I thought DX lenses provided the correct focal length for crop sensor bodies and using an FX lens would introduce a crop factor. I.e using the DX 18-55mm would give 18mm to 55mm on the D3400 while an FX 18-55mm would give 27mm to 82mm on the D3400. So there would be no crop factor using the kit lens. Have I interpreted this correctly or misunderstood something?

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  4 роки тому +1

      Great question/topic Brayden!:) I am seriously giving thought to creating a video going over the crop factor. Nonetheless, crop factor is a comparison to full sensor. If a lens is built for a crop factor camera (i.e. Nikon's DX lenses), the factor will still apply. You might think Nikon would make a 50mm DX lens truly 50mm since it was made for a crop sensor, but no:).

    • @Pilotman13
      @Pilotman13 4 роки тому +1

      Thanks for replying RealWorld, I think I understand. I was only thinking about the lens not the sensor. The sensor is not changing size and the focal lengths are the same. DX lenses only pass a circle big enough to fit the crop sensor (cropped by lens), while FX lenses have overhang on crop sensors (cropped by sensor size). But the scene is still being seen at 50mm for example, by the lens, it’s about how much of it hits the sensor

      Thanks for the post/questions Irene!:) I shot in all images in RAW and used an older version of Lightroom to post edit (I placed a few links in the description of this video related to Lightroom). I am not concerned with the number of focus points as I typically use just one:). I lock focus, recompose, and take the shot. A bunch of focus points are nice if you plan to track a fast moving subject through the frame (not something I do often). This camera (the D3400) can shoot video, but you will be challenged regarding auto focus. The camera will hunt and the limited number of focal points will be somewhat challenging (I typically do not shoot video with this camera). What camera did I use to create this video? The DJI OSMO action cam. I created a video on the OSMO which can be found here - ua-cam.com/video/vHn_28HaAD8/v-deo.html

    I am doing a photoshoot in a few days with a model who is modeling a t-shirt. I have the Nikon d5600. What would be a good aperture to do photos ( from the waist up to her head) where Everything (the shirt and her eyes) would be sharp and clear? I'll probably shoot with the kit lens and the 35 mm lens.

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the post/question:). I would lean toward using the fixed 35mm as the lens produces solid/sharp images. The aperture would depend on three things (assuming available light is good): 1) distance to the subject 2) desired effect 3) angle of the model. I suspect the distance will be relatively constant. Nonetheless, the distance along with the aperture will determine the depth of field (i.e. from what point to what point will be in focus). The desired effect will come into play if you want a nice soft background or perhaps a background that is more in focus. If the model is angled, you will want to account for a greater depth of field (i.e. higher aperture (more closed down:))). Providing the models shirt is on a similar plane as their face and lighting is relatively good, I would set the ISO to 100, go into aperture mode, and start with f/3.2. Lock focus on the eye and recompose as needed to get the upper body. Adjust the aperture down a one stop and take a few more shots and up a stop and take a few more (it's digital so have fun:)). Hope this helps!:)
