No problem. I hope this was helpful in you making your own decision. I don't necessarily think people should not purchase this radio. If you want the APRS, it's great. If you think you're gonna talk on it for any length of time, or at least know when you are going to need to soon change your battery, this isn't the radio for you.
I'm going to suggest that you either have a bad battery or you have something set wrong in the menu items. I own one of these and am completely satisfied with it. Just make sure that you aren't blaming the radio for a lack of knowledge on your part to operate it successfully.
I have a D74. The radio is fantastic, however, the atrocious battery life makes many of the features unusable "in the field". Makes a great "in the house" HT.
I started with suggestions but...When you immediately start insulting everyone calling them fanboys and fools, well it is your channel. Do what you want with it.
I have a nice portable SW AM/FM radio and in the hidden parameters servings you can set the low voltage battery shut off. Maybe that value is too high for the amount of time you use it and probably done to protect the battery
Pretty sure you have a problem with either the firmware on the radio or the battery itself. The update to the firmware recently did address some battery gauge issues. That might be why people are telling you to update the firmware. I'm not going to insult your intelligence about how to operate it or anything like that, you seem like you know what you're doing. I've had this radio for quite a while myself, and don't have this problem. I have also had the TH-D74 for many years at this point. What I can tell you is the battery on these radios is not super long-lasting. And they did nothing in the update to address it. Another thought, do you have the quick charge cradle for the battery? I have had the cradle since I bought the 74, and I use that to charge both my 74 and 75. It charges the battery differently than using USB, so could be worth looking into. Not a solution, but a troubleshooting step. For what it's worth, these are my favorite handhelds. The functionality, the menu system, it all just seems to make sense to me. Wish the battery life was longer, but that's the trade-off.
Exactly. You can't get mad at a Baofeng for being crap because it's so cheap. This on the other hand makes me rethink Baofeng and their value. They are still crappy radios. This radio is a million times better. But the battery keeps you from using it! Aka useless in the field.
Will it show voltage? Use voltage. Forget about battery % meters, they are an educated best guess based off voltage. Or does it show a steady voltage until it's dead? Regardless, I would think a firmware update could address the issues. EDIT to say also, does the problem persist even after several charge-discharge cycles? The battery may need to be learned/calibrated and needs a good full charge and discharge cycle. But again, if you are able to go into the menu and change it to display battery voltage instead of percentage it will (should) give you a better glimpse of battery life. 8.5v is full 7.6 is empty, or thereabouts. On my radio anyway. Yours may be similar I would wager.
The radio does not show anything more than a battery indicator. There is an menu option that one would think should give you more battery info like voltage or % but no, it just shows a blown up version of the battery haha. The indicator remains at 100% until the radio shuts down due to low voltage.
@@MisterTwister55Unfortunately, lithium ion batteries have a very flat discharge then suddenly drop at the end of capacity. The fact you’re seeing an 80% charge when plugging in tends to suggest a bad battery/cell or issues with the circuitry that manages the battery. Have you tried a different battery pack to see if the behavior stops?
@@MisterTwister55 odd - I have the predecessor, the D74, and while the batteries don't last nearly as long as some other radios, I still find 8 hours a usual battery life, the indicator works well, and I've never encountered that boot loop. I know a few people with the D75, and none of them have experienced what you have. Not sure what to say!
A hard NO on expensive handheld radios. Only $100 in 2 Baofengs and a TYT with long lasting batteries. Why ham UA-camrs talk about the expensive stuff that’s just going to get knocked around and break !?!?
Expensive ham portables are questionable at best. Expensive commercial gear that can also be used for ham operation is a much better use of your money.
Thanks... you saved me $750

Yup ! For APRS I like FT5DR or pico APRS . And for long talk time nothing beats a UV5R with lots of batteries
It's that Taylor Swift picture that's doing it. Delete the picture and everything will work fine. 🤣
100% the problem
My Taylor splash screen keeps mine going all day.
@@OUTRAGE_GAMINGGSHE even admits she's the problem 😂

Thanks you saved me so much money I will never buy a Kenwood radio again!
I really like the Kenwood and Yaesu radios from the 2000s and early 2010s. Something has changed (hint: Baofeng).
@@MisterTwister55 i don't even like baofeng I like retevis and yaesu
Thank you. I was considering adding this radio to my collection. This is atrocious.

SAVED ME A LOT OF $$$
That's why I'm here!

My UVk5 lasts for days, if it breaks I will have to just take the hit and spend the enormous $20 to replace it. 😂
I'm sayin!
750 is crazy to spend on a hand unit.
I've only got 450 into a full-fledged manpack, including solar panel.
Shake it off bro, shake it off.

I wasn't planning on buying one, so now I'm not buying it even more.
Yeah. I’d be pissed if I spent that much and got that kind of performance too.

Most likely a dead cell in that battery pack or one cell a lot lower than the other(s). 73s
I just cant see spending that much for an ht the most id spend is how much the yaesu ftd5
Can you get a refund?
It is definitely a faulty battery. Kenwood should replace it for you. Good luck!
Have you tried another battery? You could've received a defective one
Yup! 4 batteries. 2 radios. All the same results!
