I remember as a kid kicking my ball against the wall whilst listening to the top 20 count down and being just so happy when Slade were announced at No1. Suddenly we kids had our own music.

I was asked to do a guitar track on a local musicians recording, and he said something about " I just don't want it to sound like old man rock" I told him the only real rock is by guys who are now old men, The new music is what it is, like it or don't, but it doesn't rock. I'll be 60 in february. We may be geezers here but we know what rock is all about

+onus gumboot true and todays pop music seems at an all time low. same age here and still bending them strings too. Wasn't the biggest spade fan back then, but sure knew their stuff, was part of the whole thing. now listening for the first time in decades to them, they sure did a heavy grind, can appreciate it more, sure kicked some butt.

I've seen the Stones, the Who, Pink Floyd, Stevie Ray, BB King, Frampton, Trower, so many I can't remember....and Noddy was one of the best front men I ever saw. Looking back now, it's entirely possible Dave Hill was a big part of the excitement Noddy whipped up. Dave was never standing around when it wasn't his turn to play; he would either be stomping around on his huge platform soles, kicking his feet, cheering on the crowd or generally going nuts.
A Slade show was never boring. Noddy takes charge of a crowd right after the show starts. So glad I got to catch them live....not once, but twice....while they were in their prime.

I saw Slade at Donnington in 1980 something. Everyone in the audience had been sat down for the previous bands and were still sat down when Slade came on. I must admit I wasn’t a Slade fan and prepared myself for an hour of boredom. Half way through the first song, everyone and I mean EVERYONE was on their feet leaping up and down and throwing plastic bottles in the air. It was like a swarm of locusts for the entirety of the set. By the end of that I was a fan and say to this day, Slade were one of the best live acts I’ve ever seen. They were awesome! 👍🏻😃

1981, I had my O level results that morning and them a bunch of us went by coach to the Monsters of Rock, AC/DC were the headline but Slade stole the day - came on after in the afternoon when everyone was fed up with the rain and sub par performances before hand. Indeed, everything went flying and a stale Hovis loaf hit me back of the head but what a session. Was a fan before but that cemented it.

I saw Slade in Birmingham - you could feel this incredible atmosphere, it was electric!! One of, if not THE most exciting band I've ever seen.
Amazing musicians who deserve massive praise! It's a shame they had their fallout - imagine them getting back together for a few gigs.....it would sell in seconds.
I met Dave Hill at a hotel in the Cotswolds. He was sitting outside playing an acoustic guitar with his back to me. I didn't realise who it was but was fascinated with his guitar, so I went over and started talking to him. After a few minutes I thought....I know your face....then the penny dropped! We chatted for about 20 minutes and he couldn't have been more down to earth. Him and his wife were both lovely.

People always say that that the members of Slade weren't good looking but that was one of things that attracted me in the first place. They looked like "regular" people dressed up in weird colorful outfits which most teenagers at that time could relate to. On top of that they wrote some of the most memorable hits of the 70s.

"How Does It Feel?" is still probably my favorite SLADE song ever and I liked plenty of their songs. It started off so gentle and beautiful....it became increasingly more and more powerful as it went, until it exploded into a raucus midsection....and yet it finished just as gently as it came in. Talk about power pop; it doesn't get any better than HDIF

What folks here in America don't get is that such a small geographical country like England is so diverse, especially North to South. Places like the Midlands, Black Country, The Northeast is like a foreign country to a place like London. Makes England such an interesting place. And each scene produced amazing bands in the 60's and 70's. With the internet and TV I wonder if all this will change someday?

Actually, in 80s interviews Kevin Dubrow said recording Slade songs was a condition of the record contract, the singles from the first two albums were picked out by the record company before any recording was done. He took it as an insult because they had enough songs of their own without doing covers. I can't say it was a bad move though!
