Date: 1968-01-08.
Jimi Hendrix - guitar, vocals
Noel Redding - bass, backing vocals
Mitch Mitchell - drums, percussions
James Marshall "Jimi" Hendrix (born Johnny Allen Hendrix; November 27, 1942 - September 18, 1970) was an American rock guitarist, singer, and songwriter. Although his mainstream career spanned only four years, he is widely regarded as one of the most influential electric guitarists in the history of popular music, and one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame describes him as "arguably the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music".
Born in Seattle, Washington, Hendrix began playing guitar at the age of 15. In 1961, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and trained as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division; he was granted an honorable discharge the following year. Soon afterward, he moved to Clarksville, Tennessee, and began playing gigs on the Chitlin' Circuit, earning a place in the Isley Brothers' backing band and later with Little Richard, with whom he continued to work through mid-1965. He then played with Curtis Knight and the Squires before moving to England in late 1966 after being discovered by Linda Keith, who in turn interested bassist Chas Chandler of the Animals in becoming his first manager. Within months, Hendrix had earned three UK top ten hits with the Jimi Hendrix Experience: "Hey Joe", "Purple Haze", and "The Wind Cries Mary". He achieved fame in the U.S. after his performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, and in 1968 his third and final studio album, Electric Ladyland, reached number one in the U.S.; it was Hendrix's most commercially successful release and his first and only number one album. The world's highest-paid performer, he headlined the Woodstock Festival in 1969 and the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970 before his accidental death from barbiturate-related asphyxia on September 18, 1970, at the age of 27.
Hendrix was inspired musically by American rock and roll and electric blues. He favored overdriven amplifiers with high volume and gain, and was instrumental in utilizing the previously undesirable sounds caused by guitar amplifier feedback. He helped to popularize the use of a wah-wah pedal in mainstream rock, and was the first artist to use stereophonic phasing effects in music recordings. Holly George-Warren of Rolling Stone commented: "Hendrix pioneered the use of the instrument as an electronic sound source. Players before him had experimented with feedback and distortion, but Hendrix turned those effects and others into a controlled, fluid vocabulary every bit as personal as the blues with which he began."
Hendrix was the recipient of several music awards during his lifetime and posthumously. In 1967, readers of Melody Maker voted him the Pop Musician of the Year, and in 1968, Rolling Stone declared him the Performer of the Year. Disc and Music Echo honored him with the World Top Musician of 1969 and in 1970, Guitar Player named him the Rock Guitarist of the Year. The Jimi Hendrix Experience was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005. Rolling Stone ranked the band's three studio albums, Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold as Love, and Electric Ladyland, among the 100 greatest albums of all time, and they ranked Hendrix as the greatest guitarist and the sixth greatest artist of all time.

I love this song, sometimes I plunk away and sing it. And the smell of a world that is burnin, or maybe just a change of climate. Jimi knew what was comin !
I remember when I first put the headphones on and heard this song and thinking he really could see into the future!!
Exactly. Jimi had come and gone and come again!
"Drunk away - in a little daze". "Sung like you sang in a darker day".
@@beachcomber4141 i thought the same thing. The end of one rainy wish is also strange
@@arthurmorgan1798Yes!! More haunting moments from Axis. There is something majorly special about that record.
Jimi was all the way "out there" as we used to say back in the day. Phenomenal still to this day.
To this day....still the greatest.
Jimi died when I was 17 years old! I still am awed by how anyone can control six strings like that! He's a genius! God Bless him!
27
1 year and two months before I was born. When I 'GOT' Jimi's music it was one of the greatest musical experiences of my life. His bands name was perfect because getting deep into his music was certainly an experience and one I cherish having had. I never heard music the same way after understanding how unbelievably good Jimi was. That experience wiped out a lot of bands I thought I loved as it brought me a few levels up!
50 years after he died , and he's still #1 on any guitar player list!!! He's why I play guitar still, and my older brothers the reason I started playing!!!
Amen to that!! Like Neil Young said about Jimi, something like "There was no one even in the same building as that guy - on the same level" There truly hasn't been anyone that did so much to change the electric guitar especially in the short time he had to do it. Phenomenal.
A true master, and innovator of techniques. The control of feedback, and vision to use almost anything to get the sounds out that he was hearing. Incredible.
King!!!
Can you imagine how Jimi would have sounded if he was still alive today ? Damn we still be all hippies yet !!
To think that he got his sound without the technology available today is mind blowing ! If had today's equipment he definitely would still be the greatest by light years.
The only live version of this tune!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Where did our 50 years go, Jimi? Where?
Bonnie Speeg
When he died I placed his photo on my front door and surrounded the door with black crepe. Never did that for anyone else ... RIP
You was off the lsd huh Bonnie🤣
you don´t know about the last 50 years? well don´t bother to inform yourself
just keep hanging around ´round1969 mental + mentality yeah that is way better
the real beauty about it was that it was our 50 years. Saw him in July 1970 and it remains the high point of any musical performance I've ever witnessed.
Never thought I'd hear a live version of this song, or the EXP intro. It was a great start to the Axis album, with the spoof radio interview between Redding(I think) and Hendrix!
I remember reading (I can’t remember the book title), that Mitch Mitchell was the “interviewer”. It makes sense. Mitch, as a child, had a TV-acting career. “Paul Caruso” was the name of a musician acquaintance, of Jimi, during his Greenwich Village, New York City, scuffling days.
so far ahead of his time - this song has stood the test of time ..."and i come back to find the stars misplaced..."
Crazy, I read your comment and read "the stars misplaced" line perfectly in sync with the track... errie but in a groovy way.
I was 8 yrs old when I first heard Jimi. All guitarist have been influenced ever since.
50 YEARS GONE but not forgotten RIP
Anytime you “listen” to Hendrix the ears receive sounds from the depths of His soul. His hands, his voice, his Marshall stack on 10, the fuzz, the Univibe the Wah transform Jimi into a musical being this world will never see again. The leader of the Electric Church. The most influential guitarist ever. Jimi Hendrix was and His music still is. If you can dig it. Captain Coconut thanks for this post. Stay groovy
Don't they go to 11?
You know, cause 11 is louder than 10.

Luke Rock I absolutely agree. Stay groovy
And that voice he had !!!
Reverb
Jimi Hendrix sci fi rock i love it
I love the phantom-like quality to Jimi’s voice, It sounds eerily beautiful. Almost like a faint whisper, echoing in your head, being directly transmitted by Jimi himself from some distant plane of existence.
Ya, this dimension suck uuugh
@@stevenworth353 Would jimi agree that this dimension sucks though?
I can't get over how good Jimi's singing is on this!! This is honestly some of the best singing I have heard Jimi do outside of his albums. It makes me think this performance must have been right after Axis was released and every detail and vocal inflection was fresh in his mind having just been recorded. What a shame the recording quality of this is so uneven because this is fantastic.
The Immortal, ...King James.
When I was so in love in 1990....
R.I.P. Jimmy Hendrix (1942-1970).
wow, amazing it was recorded.
THIS IS GOLD!!!!!! I have wanted to hear this since I heard the studio version many years ago. OMG!!!! I wonder if some excellent producer could clean this up and make it even. THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS!!!!!!
I second that motion, Eric. Maybe Janie Hendrix could raise some money within her "Experience Hendrix" company and hire some nifty audio craftsman ...
clean it up that's a beautiful it's a beauty of the music Jimmy was always harangue by distortion of not his choice my feedback problems that he wasn't creating so you got to take it as it is it's beautiful just as it is I really think you would say so when you listen to it again nothing clean about it man it's just beautiful
I'm looking at the photograph as the phrase do I see and I'm looking till I see eyeshadow eye color fake eyelashes am I seeing that no can't be but take a close look zoom in on the frame is he wearing eyeshadow I mean more power to him if he is fake eyelashes more Parliament to them if he is I'm not judging I'm just saying I never saw that before it might seen something I'm not seeing cuz you know as he said you can't always believe everything you hear and see now can you but if you excuse me I must be on my way so Jimi little did you know
I guess when you realize you're a star you got to expect everyone to be photographing you you got to look on your best..........?
I love that jumpy bouncy sling shot type of sound he's doing there kind of like Jerry Garcia before his time the whole song is beautiful thank you Jimi God rest your soul
I bet Jimi would really dig some of the ambient synth noise we have today... A wall of noise that moves all the molecules in your body... That "Radio EXP" UFO noise had to have been impressive, almost overwhelming to hear in person!
Jesus, Buddha, Jimi👳🏽🙏🏻♥️
The Best!!!
Only time Jimi perform EXP/ Up from the skies live :))
Such a fantastic song! & so rarely coverage...perhaps that's a good thing :-)
Yeah, and it´s in Sweden :))
All time favorite Hendrix tune..it's the lyrics: Genius.
Love it rock and roll still rules
@@SpeegBJ it's the groove-awesome feel
Wow never thought I would hear this song live recording of it glad I heard it one of my favs exp only JIMI could do something like this .thanks 4 upload capt.
The forgotten single (follow up to "Foxey Lady") that's never heard on radio anywhere.
more than a guitar player or the songwriter he was a prophet is Velvet pants and flowing scarves excuse me you can't believe everything you hear and see now can you but you can't when it comes to Jimi!!!

I have 104 jimi CDs and have heard many more .this is a first for me. Thank you Captain Midnight!!!!
grandpa..you should keep looking for this uploader, or find the crosstowntorrents...google it
Hello Grandpa, I would like to see your collection.
Sounds like a cassette recorder
This blew me away to hear it. I have always wanted to hear a live version of this deep cut. Axis is my favorite Jimi album (which is saying a lot as the other three released during his life are all masterpieces). There is a certain energy and a feeling of unlimited possibilities on Axis. Plus it has some of his most beautiful tunes.
@@beachcomber4141 agree my favorite song is bold as love the albums was so flavorful and bright
MAAAD love , thank you Jimi
He was far ahead of his time.
I thought I heard everything ever recorded of The Legend. Thanks!👍
Well I guess it's going to be Jimi kinda day
I feel u, I haven't listened to Hendrix in way too long, I was listening to a band called Tame Impala last night and they made a remix to "Manic Depression" so now today I woke up on a Hendrix binge!!
He was really out there and living in a hands-in-your- lap, straight society. He really didn't play notes, but rather surfed on sound.
He was the Laird Hamilton of the guitar! I love that. He surfed on sound. Perfect.
This is epic!!! I'm speechless.....
Someday A.I. will be able to clean this up to the original. But even now I can dig the chord progression that is so unusual (seemingly simple yet unfathomable in detail) Pure JH genius.
Ahh if they could only clean this up. What a gem.
merci
"As you all know - you just can't believe anything you see and hear - can you". "Now if you'll excuse me I must be on my way".
If you'll excuse me, I must be on my way...
13 when this was released..after that at least in our little group..we all aspired to play like him..becuz we certainly knew we couldn't dress like him..or be as cool..but some of sure gave it a go!
Jimi the magician of blues and rock, like i say way ahead of his time.. he influenced a lot of the greats from today, and, will continue to forever..., Thanks for this rare footage, Jimi lives on!!!
He saw the top of the mountain and tried for us to join him in the resplendent nature therefore.
You're stoned
@@ClaimOfRightMuso I must've been!!
@@betterthantelly2993 Haha. Keep-well, and have a nice Christmas.
Timeless Talent
man he was a master of those pedals and special effects, but when he just plays, like Little Wing, you knew you heard something special. Clapton tells a funny story of calling up Page, and trying to get him to come to the club in London where Jimi was playing, Great story, look into it, "Clapton's 1st impressions of Jimi".
Great to hear this, had no idea it existed.
Wow.....Beautiful!!!!!
Never heard this before, amazing post, thanks so much for uploading it 👍🏻❤️
Darn shame there isn’t a release quality recording of this performance.
Niiice! Sounds pretty amazing after all these years. I just heard this 1/8/2020. I was around in my teen years then and bought the original album. I never heard this live until now. Thanks for a great post. Hendrix can still pack 'em in. Brilliant.
Are you kidding me? am i dreaming? Cool as can be! Thank you my brother!
Very rare indeed, but beautiful.
This is awesome thank you for making my day LOVE THIS SONG😍😍😍😍😍
Thank You Again Great Venue Jimi Is Up From The Sky's Have A Dynamite Weekend
thanks captain!
Beautiful World Thanks
Love it. Thanks.
Insane
Hey buddy thanks, have a great weekend! ✌️
Thank You!!!
Jimi=BestMusicianEver
That's all I got
real great things at your channel thanks for this
Amazing
Where has this been??????? An intergalactic delivery!!!😮
Thank you again Capt. This is a very rare live version of this song I particularly love how he works that wah wah pedal has a liquidy if that's a word sound to it 😁excellent.
Yes! I have always thought Jimi's wahs sound like liquid too!
It sounds slow but it is also slowing down and speeding up by a half tone during the tune. That would be quite a task to tune the performance. You have to pitch it up least a half tone but differently in different places. It starts off a whole tone flat but picks up a half tone sharper then back down somewhat. It does sound like a great show and he still included the tape manipulation part live with just the dialogue. He then goes into a much better wammy bar frenzy than the studio version. Killer!
YES YES YES!!!! After that 'mind blowing' wammy intro you KNOW that guitar had to be so out of tune!! Ahh what Jimi could have done with a locking nut!! I am not sure if it was the tape slowing down, but you could hear variations in the tuning for sure.
Instant Love
Covered by Joan Jett, so I put this and that in my Jett playlist. Thanks for the upload!
This is a real find. Thank you! I think that Jimi might have fared better if he played more deep cuts, like this one, and longer shows, maybe jammed with some jazz players. He wrote numerous beautiful ballads that never, or rarely, got played live.
Totally agree!! This sounds like it must have been recorded right after Jimi finished Axis as it is so right on to the album. And his singing on here is excellent! I can imagine being in the audience and Jimi opening up with this!! WOW
First time I've heard this live. Amazing, despite the poor quality sound. A rare find indeed. I think it's Mitch interviewing him on the studio version isn't it?
Not sure, I think it was MItch, but I am SURE I had no idea a live version of this existed!!! What a gem.
Chas
no it is mitch
It's definitely Mitch 👍
grazie
I just heard this song for the first time played by the Sydney Conservatorium of Music number 1 jazz band - that was a surprise for a Jimi Hendrix fan who learned to play the guitar to All Along The Watchtower as I’d never heard of this song before!
Get Axis Bold as Love!! My favorite Jimi album.
Gil Evans also did a jazz version of "Up from the Skies", if I recall correctly. It appears on the album "The Gil Evans Orchestra Plays the Music of Jimi Hendrix".
Jimi Hendrix returning back from the future only to find😊 the future of mankind has been destroyed.
Wow!
Wow! I wondered if he had ever done this live!
Christopher garcia no, thats actually one of the only live performances for EXP and up from the skies
Sound like i was recording in the space
Badass
The smell of a world that has burned , well maybe, maybe it's just a change of climate , what a prophet he was and that more than 50yrs ago.
The word genius is not enough to cover Jimi's capacities.
YES!!!! I remember the first time hearing this on headphones in the late 80's thinking he really could see into the future! And who is to say he did not. Jimi's music blows me away now as much as it ever did. Just incredible.
🔥
Thanks for posting never had heard it before sounds not that bad for when it was done
Had no idea there was a live version of this song.
Thank you so much. This is fucking gold
Hummm, this is incomplete but maybe the best sounding version I've heard 'Except for the clicks and pop's ' . I've had many copies over the years. Too bad he didn't play these songs more !
Beginning interview is missing eh
DE OUTRO MUNDO
Jimi is up in heaven, hopefully, forming a band with all the late great legends. He’d be amazing in a band with John Bonham on drums and Terry Kath on bass. Who’d play the keys? Keith Emerson would be good. Anybody got any ideas of a lineup consisting of late great musicians?
Jimi,SRV,Gary Moore, Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker,John Lord - roadie Jesus.
Way cool.

Wow,,,, strange sound. Did someone reach back in time and record this off a Chronovisor ? hehehehe Can definitely picture him playing...xoxo
🌈❤️❤️❤️🌻🙏🙏🙏🍀🌹🌈
I have this with Mitch intro speak
I heard Noel Redding, too
10 feet from the Experience was a little bit more than I could dig. Jimi played that Fender guit- box to no extents. Also, anyone know how Noel Redding got on top of 2 Marshall amps?
Are you sure the cited date of 18 Jan 1968 is correct? I have a recording of "EXP" and "Up from the Skies" recorded at the Konserthuset, Stockholm, 1st show, on 8 January 1968. It's on the CD EXP OVER SWEDEN (UV-1002) released by UNIVIBES fanzine in 1994.

Is this audio slowed down? You can kinda hear it in how slow Jimi talks.. idk
Is this from Hunter College March 02, 1968? It was released as a single in the States esrly 1968.
