None of you seem to realize that it wouldn't prevent use of the escalator at all. Just step on, the balls will harmlessly bounce around you as you ride up.
This would be a HUGE safety issue potentially slipping on a ball and getting injured. More so where you get to the top where the balls are concentrated. Interesting idea, but very inconsiderate and annoyingly implemented.
