hi guys, just wanted to emphasize that this video is intended for those who want to reduce their TBRs. If you have a big TBR that doesn't mean you need to reduce it. Keep it as big or as small as you're comfortable with. This is just there to help people who wish that theirs was a bit smaller.
This video is so helpful. And it's lovely that it's so realistic. I'm always putting myself on book buying bans and it doesn't work. I also need to really go through my shelves and think hard about each book. There are definitely some I will realistically never get round to and I need to realise that it's OK. I don't need to keep them. Thank you!
I love it when this video gets a comment. Good luck with your book reducing journey ☺️. Remember if you really struggle to let go, you can try and see what you could get through the library and unhaul knowing you can always get it through there if you were to want to at one point. Or you can put those in a box somewhere and see how you feel about them when you reexamine the box months later. By that time you might find that you've already emotionally disconnected from it
These are great tips! I am on a book buying diet: if I read three books from my TBR, I am allowed to buy one. I haven’t stuck with it one hundred percent, but the TBR has been going down since I decided to do so. It’s going to take me two years to bring it down to my objective of 30-50 books.
these were great tips! im currently at 35 on my physical tbr (not counting books i dnf'd but decided to keep) and i feel like im probably not going to get below 20 at any time, but thats really not that bad so im happy with it. just glad im finally under 50!
Hey TBR twin. At 35 as well 😉. And that's kind of around where I want my maximum TBR to be at once I've reached zero. But still want to do it first to make sure I read all for those oldies that have been on there forever. Congrats on getting under 50!
I'm definitely going to tackle something like that, but more of a "reduce my ebook TBR" because I just Do Not Like ebooks that much, and I'd like to keep my ebook list to ARCs only, but I've got so many I'll never read otherwise (sigh, book bundles.......) so I gotta clear that stuff now. You're definitely an inspiration :D
ow thank you! And good luck with reducing those e-books. I think it's extra dangerous because they don't take up physical space so before you know it you've accumulated way too many
This was such a great video, I love the advice that you gave especially the emphases on the why. Also really enjoyed (and agree with!) that choice to go to a no-buy right away is almost impossible. It's just like any habit or change of behavior, the expectation of yourself to do something completely different & only accept success if you do it 100%.... it's a recipe for disaster! So much better to take it in stages, make some minigoals, and check in along the way. I also really appreciate that you mentioned that you don't have to unhaul everything, and that there is always an opportunity to unhaul again later if you want. Thank you so much for this video! I am definitely cheering you on to your goal in 2022! You can do it!
Just making sure people don't make my past mistakes 😂 so many times I've expected progress to be much quicker. Beginning of the year I usually think I'll reach the goal easily but by the second half of the year those goals definitely become more difficult to maintain 😉
Loved this videos! Especially with the non set rules like you can adapt them and reset them along the journey! Love that it makes it less stressful and more realistic!! Thank you!
Also... idea for a reward that's bookish but might work is special editions/box set of favourite work(s). If they are already read, it wouldn't technically increase TBR!
Indeed. Good one. I also bought quite a few books this year that I'd already read as ways to get the satisfaction of a new book without it impacting my TBR
📈Oh boy, so many talking points from this episode! Got to admit that while I get a lot of 📦 delivered, I like to get them all at once rather than in dribs and drabs. So I’ll usually default to a larger combined haul. I've actually managed to 'unhaul' all my other collections over recent years, so 📚 are now the last physical item that I continue to collect. Thus my own excuse for buying more than I can read in a year is that I don’t actually buy much else (🍫 excluded!) and I get to support other people in some small way.
and that's definitely fine ❤ I see many creators with huge collections who also love to keep them like that and part of me definitely envies them for that. My brain just likes to take the side of those books that are impatiently waiting for their time to shine 😁 And so definitely just keep on collecting books! as you said it's a nice way to get to support the publishing industry and the authors that put their heart and souls into these books. We'll see how well I maintain some of these buying habits once I reach zero TBR 😅
A bad side of my 'buy and forget' approach is that the time between buying book 1 and actually reading it (and then deciding to buy everything else by that author) is often so long that the cover artwork changes… and my OCD cries out, “nooooooooo!” I am referencing Abercrombie's “The Blade Itself” here, which I have a truly beautiful and tactile physical copy. I saw more recent versions of it on a #BookTube show the other day and I literally 😬 I’ve also seen pictures of an entire long series that I only have the first book of, unread of course (reference to Pierce Brown's “Red Rising” book). I think I’d like to be reading new purchases sooner, rather than zeroing my TBR. To that effect I’m interested in trying a mix of audio book reading to increase my annual reading score. You’ve mentioned how you swap between audio and physical book - I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on that modern style of reading which I have yet to dabble with.
Excellent video. I myself am firmly in the minimalist camp wrt physical books and even with ebooks, I try to maintain a small library (well it's 15+ books right now but they are nearly all favourites). Don't have a TBR but do have a "want-to-read" Goodreads shelf with gems such as (please don't laugh, I'll cry 😆) Doors of Stone, TWoW, ADoS and F&B 2. Am I deluding myself? Perhaps! The environment of your channel is very calming. Appreciate the way you articulate your points.
Haha not sure whether I still have Doors of Stone etc on my want to read list. Tried to trim the want to read list recently so might have removed them. Pretty sure I'll hear about it when we finally have news 🤣
I loved this :- ) Good that you mentioned that a great way of reducing TBR is getting rid of some books haha :- ) I just finished dealing with books I got in 2019 and only have a couple from 2020 so mostly I have books I got in 2021 on my physical TBR, which I'm quite happy about :- )
Great! I definitely still have quite a few on there from before I was keeping track of purchase dates. I think a third is from 2020 and 2021 now. The rest from before. But that should be resolved in 2022 😉
You've got this. Give yourself some flexibility here and then when you're finding it difficult as long as overall you keep on chipping away at that TBR over time. I had a month in which I added more books than I read and some in which there was no process but then made up for that in next months. You can do it!
My goal for the year was to get under 500 book physical tbr. I started the year at 529. I got as low as 509 in the middle of the year, but unfortunately I am up to 531 now lol. 2022 is my year though. These were great tips.
Hope these tips can help you out next year. It definitely gets difficult in the second half of the year. In the beginning you still have that motivation from setting up the goal. But that second half can be really challenging.

Thank you! Flexibility is definitely needed to reach succes with an enterprise as tackling your TBR. 😉

that would be me, getting my tbr to zero then buying 100 books lol
haha trust me it's very tempting after working towards it for so long 😋 but I'll try to not undo all of that progress in one big sweep
