If you want to avoid the margin account and unlimited risk to the up side, long puts at the money can work as a synthetic short position as long as you can get enough time for the move. One advantage to this approach in a cash account is T+1 vs T+2 settlement. Another is that you cannot lose more than you put into the contracts. Cash accounts do not have to worry about PDT either. Keep in mind that someone does have to sell the stock to make the price go down though - it doesn't have to be you. Also, long calls can be used to protect your position to the up side. Just as with "hard to borrow", not all stocks have options and not all options have narrow spreads and good liquidity.
I focus on trading stocks not options, that being said, there's many ways to make money in the markets.
Thank You, great information Ross!!
You're welcome Randy!
I just want to say Thank You for providing clear and accurate information for us here. Your level of knowledge is obviously superior than most.

Hello! Very new to the channel and still looking at setting up an account, curious how much you think a recession would effect day trading
Hey Moner, The recession is going to negatively impact investors, but Day Traders, for the most part won't have a lot to worry about because we are in and out of the market in a matter of minutes. The market might be a little slow, but with the right risk management skills you will still be able to make money. Yes ty i keep hearing this but i dont quite understand this
I short basically everyday i feel like i'm able to see shorts better then longs especially when trumps in office lol
That's funny, you must have been losing like crazy then cause he's rose the markets in half the time obama did lol
I'm a 2 week newbie. I think trump did this past Iran bull crap for the stocks in a round about way
@MichaelWhatever floats your boat man. Obama left us in a big mess too. Not even being political but, a fact is a fact. Take what you want from it and run. Trump 3 1/2 years Obama 8 years. Wasn't even gonna comment but decided to take a dump on this troll aka loser.
@@bradleymartinmusic what trump created was volatility and where every there is volatility there is money to be made especially if you day trade

Great vid, as usual. What's the name of the trading simulator software you're using? Where to download/get it? Thanks.
It's the Warrior Trading sim, you can learn more here: www.warriortrading.com/paper-trading/
I just started using CMEG Sterling. Yesterday, I shorted on the simulator and made much more than I did on long trades on the premise that "everything that goes up must finally come down". After watching this video, I doubt that it's a good idea to short on my real trade account considering the great risk of losing more than I put in. Thanks, Ross!
That's great! You're welcome!
Wow this is amazing, I have spend most of the time trying to look for a video explaining how to short sell. I never understood how is this and what it meant. Thank you Soo much Cameron. I do have a question and I how you can do a video explaining in how to located of to identify how to see how much shares are offered to know when to exit and when to exit out of a trade
You bet, happy to help!
From one red beard to another, this was an absolutely great video! Being able to see a couple examples of a short in action helped my brain understand the concept 100% !! Keep up the good work!
Thanks a lot!!
Great explanation. Are you able to add a stop loss when you enter a short position??
Yes you can enter a stop on a short position!
Hey Ross! I’m a pro student but wanted to say this video is excellent and should be in the courses bcse it actually shows you shorting! I’m happy I found this video actually! Can you consider loading this video in the warrior classes on shorting?

HOLD HOLD NEVER GIVE IN!!! Diamond hands
5k loss doing that recently don't do it
If a stock squeezes why do you have to cover right away? Can't you wait until it dips down the next day? (Assuming it does) Are the timelines to pay back a short position all the same? Thanks for the video!
You can wait for a possible reversal in the stock, but when a stock squeeze begins to happen, it can be very risky to hold on to a short as the stock could make a very strong move higher
Hey Ross as we know you go long buy on the ask and sell in strength on ask but bid if it shows weakness however I would like to know do you short on the bid to get in quickly or ask?
I only trade to the long side and would not be interested in shorting, but if I did, I would likely short at the bid
Thank you for the explanation...
It's my pleasure!
Clear as mud. Thanks
You're welcome!
thank you for the video ross!
You're welcome!
Thanks Ross! That’s an awesome explanation. A couple Quick questions about shorting:
1) will a broker auto-cover a short position after a certain amount of loss? Like whatever your max account liquidity is or something.
2) does hitting a button like flatten in thinkorswim also flatten your short positions? If so is it just market buying/selling when using that feature?
3) does float size impact amount of shares to be borrowed. Like I’m starting to realize that lower floats seem to favor bullish trends because as more shares change hands to a bull side holding for new gains limits deflation of a stock as in CPAH yesterday. While higher floats favor bearish trends such as TRIL yesterday where it popped but interest moved into other stocks decreasing buy volume allowing for shorts to squeeze it down. Does this level of thinking make sense?
Thanks again for all your videos and tutelage.
Munkay, yes a broker will close out a position if the draw down is over the amount you have in your account. As for flattening the position, I would think it does the same if you're short, though I would test it on the sim. The float does affect the borrow rate the lower the float the less shares available to borrow.
Glad you enjoyed the video!
Thank you for the teaching.
You're welcome Quincy!
Don’t short sell. Buy and hodl always

Hey Ross - I trade Crude Oil futures CDFs, so not your area of expertise but I hope you can still help. What percentage of my account should I risk per trade, before leverage. In addition to this, my Crude Oil margin percentage is 1.5% of the total position size. Is this too risky? Thanks in advance!
That can depend on the trades you take, how often you trade and the success rate of your strategy. We have an article on position sizing here: www.warriortrading.com/position-sizing/

hey Ross for a small account what offshore broker would you recommend to get pass the PDT rule and have more margin
Hey Clinton, Here is some more info on some offshore brokers we know and would recommend looking into.
For accounts under $25,000 (as little as $500), you can take a look at CME Group (US and all international residents except Canada).

Sensei Ross, can you please change the mouse cursor color, so i can easily find where your pointer is moving. it was confusing seeing 2 pointers on the screen at the same time too.
This was the best shorting video I've ever seen, i had to go back study this 3 times. Thank you for posting it
Noted Sach, appreciate the comment!
I'll short occasionally, but only in large cap swing trades. The level of risk associated with shorting small caps is too high for my tastes. I've been tempted in certain environments, but I'm a bit more risk averse than most when it comes to short selling. As usual, well thought out video Ross :)
Thanks Derek!
Hi Ross. Can you recommend a platform for me to trade on that has a practice account so that I can slowly hone any should I may have ...
I'd recommend the Warrior Trading sim, www.warriortrading.com/paper-trading/
In the example at 1:00 - As an alternative to taking on the risks of shorting stocks, margin requirements, finding shares to borrow, etc., you could simply buy an $85 put option (or any strike with a delta of -.70 or above), and make money as the stock drops. You would be long the put option, but make money on the downside.
That’s definitely true in large cap stocks that have options, but many small cap and mid cap companies don’t have options 😢
great info, and well explained
what strategy would you recommend for beginners?

Hey ross, thanks again for another great video.
1 question? Do you have any videos/blog posts or if not maybe point me In the right direction when it comes to paying taxes as a day/swing trader? If you dont have any videos I'm sure I'm not alone in a group of people who would really appreciate that info.
Hey Chad, Unfortunately, we do not provide any personalized tax information. That is much better reserved for a tax professional, since it will depend on your individual circumstances. I recommend reaching out to a CPA to get more information.

Lightspeed: www.warriortrading.com/lightspeed-trading-review/
Ross can you comment on the Tesla stock that recently went way up in value and the fact that lots of people were short stocked, they bet against the stock ever going up to this value and lost a lot of money. Why were they even holding the stock?
Hey Jenny, I think it comes down to the emotions that people face when trading. If we as traders get too emotionally invested this is when issues can start occurring, seems to be what is driving TSLA right now.
Anybody notice his ticker actually has the company logos?! That is slick programming. I wonder how it’s done. Does it find them on the fly or is there a db of all the big logos?

When short selling stock then buying the stock to get out of the short sell, do you end up owning stock in the company?

This is confusing to me. With Etoro who I have used a few months, you sell, and buy separately. If I short 1000 shares, I can also buy 1000 shares, and have 1000 buy and 1000 sell at the same time. If I want to close my short, I click 'close'. Is this just with US brokers or is just Etoro different. I have also used trial accounts in a few other platforms and haven't noticed this being different. Also, buy "cover" do you mean buy back the shorts or what? The bit about covering and buying also confused me.

Awesome, glad you enjoyed!
Thank you for this info.
You mantiond couple of times that there is a limit to short position. Can you give examples.
Some stocks have limited amounts of shares available to borrow, which makes the demand for those shares higher or in some cases makes it so you can't get any shares to short.
I ment to ask. How long do i have till i sell back the short position.?
Why would we even want to short a stock. Especially in this time period
There are times when stocks just keep declining in value. BHC stock is a good example, as it declined 90% over 1 year
@@DaytradeWarrior it's funny how this video is advertised during this time period. You're even responding to the comments. Seems suspicious. Nice explanation of shorting
9:28 If you see this comment I have a question about what you said here, when 140% of game stop was shorted I no longer understood what you meant.
They did a weird deal with the broker to short more the. 100% but normal people don't get those luxuries.
If a stock is HTB can it be shorted at all?
It depends on the broker, if there are shares available there will most likely be borrow fees.
Nice video, Ross. I've been trying to explain this to my older brother who's been trading with me recently. I'll send this over to him lol

Love the channel and so thankful to have discovered warrior trading. In a short when you buy back the shares is the transaction over? Or do you have to sell them again? Sorry may be a dumb question just new to shorting. Thank you!
