  • Sunday marks 60 years since doctors in Japan discovered a neurological disease in the town of Minamata.
The condition was linked to the dumping of toxic waste.
Some have been recognised as sufferers, but others are still campaigning for support.
Al Jazeera's Harry Fawcett reports from Minamata.

(0:40) - Although he waste water dumped into the bay by the Chisso Corporation was toxic and did contain mercury compounds, it did not actually contain any methyl mercury.
The methyl mercury was due to a certain anaerobi bacteria in the bay that metabolised the inorganic mercury contaminated waste and adding a carbon atom to the compound in the process, essentially converting the relatively safe (although still quite toxic) inorganic mercury compound into the extremely toxic organic compound called methyl mercury.
This is one of the reasons Chisso was allowed to continue dumping the mercury waste into the bay for so long. The link had not yet been established and took quite some time before the complete mechanisms of the biochemistry that was still going on was fully understood.

One would hope that this kind of destructive criminal behavior was a thing of the past. But the Flint Michigan tap water scandal, and other cities, is demonstrating it still happens.
