Nice effort, nice video.. 9:39 a bit of slab action there. Took me 3 days to summit 2004 w mt Rainier Alpine Guides, same route. Congrats, I could never be able to calm my mind to ski that.
Amazing! What a summit! That was BIG day in itself, ..but all the preparation, years of effort, doubt, anxiety, longing etc. is in there as well. There was a time when I would not have understood this, ..only when I was engaged in a long-term project myself did I realize that. That must feel sooo good now, to have succeeded!? Stay save, thanks for sharing!
Wow, nice work! I am eager to get back up there. Thinking about another climb this spring! I don't know if I could do it in a day with my current setup though!
Thanks! This was our first Rainier summit. When we decided we were serious about this, Evan read Training for the Uphill Athlete to inform our training! We did as much training in zone 2 heartrate as possible. We’d run/walk for an hour 3-4 times a week keeping things as hilly as possible while being really strict about keeping heartrate down. Then ski toured or hiked/ran on weekends, building up time and vert. The important thing was building endurance so we could keep moving forever, no matter how slow. There were groups faster than us who burned out and had to turn around.
Great question! A lot of thought went into this. I really wanted to ski from the summit, and as much as I could on the descent! This year, Ingraham Direct was never skiable - it got crevassed up really early. DC involves that whole rock section. The other possibility was Fuhrer Finger but that route is more involved and since there were a lot of other factors (had never been at 14k’ before, doing it in a day, etc.) Emmons was pretty clearly the safer option. Are you planning on skiing? What route are you looking at?
@ fuhrer finger is the route I’ve looked at. I will be skiing, it’s definitely tougher going from sea level to 14K but I think the alpine style doing it in a day eliminates a lot of the excess dangers from extended exposure to altitude. I’ve done well at 10k plus coming from sea level in the past so I’m not particularly worried about it. Strong effort, good to see you getting after it!
Waiting to see your film, Chuck, of your last trip and how you did descending from 14,400 feet elevation after an 11k skin up with a 20 lb. pack. No grooming or lifts on this mountain, and 9.5 k of it is above timberline on a windy peak in a marine climate. Plus an uncontrolled fall can definitely result in a bad day - for more reasons than you can count to, apparently.

Climbed this route in Sept, 1967. Think I’m too old now to do it on skis in one day. Your 18 hour ski ascent of it is impressive!
Why were you not roped up while on the glacier during the ski-down?
Hey, this is in my state! I'd have no idea how to plot a course like this. Very impressive to watch!! ✌

I did the Fuhrer Finger in a day from Paradise. It was long but very much worth it!
This makes me go hell yeah!
Nice. That is alot of vert in a day. Thanks for sharing.

This is Awesome!!!!
great vid Nina, i hope to do this soon. New sub here.
This is sweet! What type of prep did you do? Have you summited Rainier before? I know that typically takes 2-3 days

@@ninaoutside Thank you for the details! This is a crazy journey - super impressive!
Rad! I’ve thought a lot about doing this too! I was thinking a different route though. Why did you pick this route?

@@redalaska -- doing well at 10k for a flatlander is completely different than how you'll feel at 14k.
@ flatlander? Alaska is flatland now?
@@redalaska -- most people would equate sea level with flat.
Dramatic music 😢
like what she had to say but can not ski for shit
Thanks for the kind words! 🥰

You both deserve huge kudos tackling so much vert in a day and still having some legs left to ski down. Well done.
