    Also, without fluid, when I spin the torque converter, only it spins. When i spin the final drive at the back, the clutches in the trans also spin. Correct? The fluid spinning in the converter will allow the clutches to engage and power the trans?

      Yes, no oil it's not going to behave like a transmission. Oil in the TC and a fluid pressure it should all be OK.

    Hi jeff, need to connect the shifter cable to the trans. Is the shift device on the side of the trans in park if it is pushed towards the engine or pulled toward the rear?

      Pretty sure it's pushed forward, but just move the gear lever and see which direction the cable moves. This will tell you the correct position of the transmission lever.

    When installing the valve body, those 5 rubber grommets are not installed flush. There is about an 1/8" or more, all the same height. Will the valve body push them into the hole flush?
    Thanks

      Yes. They are designed to compress to hold the pressure and not leak.

      @@jeffrichardsoncardiy thanks, they compressed easily by the valve body.

    Its going back in this week end, do you put any antiseize or anything on the bolts that mate to the engine?
    Thanks for you help throughout this project.

      I personally wouldn't, but I don't live in an environment where corrosion and seizure is ever an issue. More than happy to help. Hope it all works OK.
      The transmission can do some funny things until all the clutches etc are filled with fluid. Spend as much time as you can after first start changing through as many gears as possible to ensure it's all completely filled. If it's possible to have on jack stands and run through the gears gently this is what I'd do.

      @@jeffrichardsoncardiy glad you brought that up. The car is on 4 -12 ton jack stands. Maybe a little overkill, but give me plenty of room to work.
      Question is what procedure to start adding the ATF back in.

      @jeffrichardsoncardiy  Рік тому

      It's the standard fill technique for an auto box. Are you familiar? If the TC is new I"d be filling it as much as possible prior to install. Expect that after start it will suck up the fluid rapidly and you will need to fill with a bunch more prior it coming out of the fill hole. Then I'd be spending a good bit of time cycling through gears in an attempt to get the fluid everywhere.

    Did you ever weight this beast?

    • @jeffrichardsoncardiy
      @jeffrichardsoncardiy  Рік тому +1

      Never. I just knew it was heavy. Not as heavy as the V8 it was attached to though.

    Thanks for your help.
    As far as filling the trans, gear oil in the diff, gear oil in the transfer case, and trans fluid added to the bottom of the trans.
    Gear oil, is Mobil 1 or Valvoline synthetic 75-90 ok to use?
    Thanks again

      To confirm what fluids you need, look at this. What you say sounds ok.

    hello Jeff,
    I am rebuilding a 5hp19 fla right now and have two pieces that I am not sure where they go. have been through numerous repair manuals, but I have faith you will know. it is an all wheel drive trans like the one you videoed 3 months ago
    one is a heavy spring and the other is a bearing with a thick shim attached.
    if you give me your email, I can shoot you a pic of the two culprits.
    thanks

      I"m not prepared to put my personal email here. More than happy to send you an email if you put your email address here.
      This video was taken a number of years ago, and I sold the car soon after. A few months ago I moved the video from a youtube account that I hadn't used in years just so it was still available to people.
      My memory of the rebuild is pretty sketchy. I'm still very familiar with the RWD version of the transmission, as I still own a car with this and also help people with their transmission problems. Are the parts specific to the FLA variant or generic? I can only assume the spring you mention is from the FLA variant. Also, have you looked at the parts list for the transmission? The only spring I can see is the one on the pinion shaft.

      hi Jeff,
      garypopiela@gmail.com is my email and then I will send a pic.
      problem with trans manuals is the pics are of one varient, but they pertain to several versions.

    Anybody know bearing size at 23:00?

  • @bigshott9117
    @bigshott9117 2 роки тому

    I am at the part of trans that is at 25:00. my question is the gear that is installed on the shorter shaft the sticks out the back of the trans, there is a large spring that goes on before the gear. the spring pushes up on the gear and I am assuming that the tightening of the housing forces the spring to compress. The long staft that comes out of the back of the trans has a bearing and thick spacer before you put the gear on, I think. Do you know the tightening specs for these screws that attach this piece to the main trans housing? dry gasket?
    Thank you.

      I don't have the specs, and I sold the car years ago. I'd be just measuring the bolt and using a standard torque. M10 = 42Nm, M8 = 23Nm. From memory I think those were M8, but that's just a guess.

      @@jeffrichardsoncardiy hey Jeff, do you dry fit your garkets on the trans of do you use a product to seal it along with the gasket.
      Thanks

    • @jeffrichardsoncardiy
      @jeffrichardsoncardiy  2 роки тому

      @@bigshott9117 Definitely dry fit. The paper gaskets work very well. The only issue is when the pan gets corroded, and in this case the pan needs replacing. If this is OK, then only dry fit.
