I'm from Goalpara district of Assam as Nandy ji has said about hierarchical sacrifice I have heard in ancient times in mayong there is a temple name kesaikhaiti Gukhani thaan at the foothills of mayong hill where human sacrifice was practiced the villagers says that in ancient times before the sacrifice the Bali pashu appears by itself he takes bath and let the priest to perform the rituals before Bali and he gets ready for Bali by himself and people do not know from where that person comes and gets ready to be sacrificed and no-one forces him for sacrifice.

Mahāmāhēśvara Abhinavagupta deals with paśu bali in his Tantrālōka.
Jayaratha raises the question concerning the position of the sheep that is to be slaughtered.
‘Now we have accepted that paśu yāga (animal sacrifice) on this occasion is divine, but still, to cut the throat of a paśu on that occasion is always disliked by the sheep. He will not like it since cutting his throat is not a joke’.
To this objection, Abhinavagupta puts forth this answer:
‘This is great blessing and great help that you cut his throat on this occasion. This is a great service to this paśu. No matter if he will not like it at the time of slaughtering, it will not be appreciated by that sheep’.
To clarify, Abhinavagupta gives the following example. When you are overwhelmed with some peculiar disease, the doctor prescribes a mixture and fasting; but fasting you don’t appreciate, mixture also you don’t appreciate because it is not sweet, it is sour. But this is a great service to that diseased being. So this is a kind of drug we are giving the sheep, and this drug is a terrible mixture for getting rid of the disease of rebirths - birth and death, birth and death, in continuity.’
Jayaratha then raises the following objection:
“If it is true that by cutting his throat he will be liberated, then what is the purpose, what is the sense, what is the meaning in initiation then? You just cut his throat and he will be liberated. Why undergo all these cycles of procedures of rituals, just cut his throat and he will be liberated’.
In answer to this objection, Abhinavagupta quotes from the śāstras:
‘In Mṛtyuñjaya Tantra (Netra Tantra), in the section of pāśaccheda it is said by Lord Shiva - when you cut the bindings of an individual to liberate him from repeated births and deaths, at that precious moment, āṇava, māyīya and kārma malas are also removed along with his body. So, he will not come into this wretched cycle of existence again, he will not be born again - because when both good and bad karma are exhausted, then there is no question of birth again. So this is not slaughtering the sheep, we are initiating the sheep, this is one way of dīkṣā.

People from erstwhile East Bengal, present day Bangladesh are very much aware about the injunctions of balividhan in Shakta texts. Our Kuladevis of that region used to be offered Bali regularly in Ashwin Durga Pujo of goats and buffalo. They have a much nuanced and expanded perspective on the subject of pashu bali. Learn from them. They are more rooted to Shakta shastras

The importance and significance of Bali (sacrificial ritual) as compiled in our shastras (scriptures) cannot and should not be ignored. For our dharma to sustain, shastras are the pramanas (standard authority) and not what you feel in your own antaratma. There are references in Vedas on its importance and has clear specification on how to offer Bali of specific animals for specific rituals, how it helps in ascendance of the jiva of those animals as they get released from pashu yoni (lower births) and attain higher births (like that of a cow or human being). Rajarshi ji’s reference of kalika puran and several other tantra shastras clearly emphasize the importance of ritualistic sacrifice when it is required to propitiate certain fierce form of devatas whose inherent nature is not sattvic but either rajasic or tamasic in their projection for a sadhaka to appease or even to have communication with that devatha. Where Bali involving animal sacrifice is not needed or rather one should abstain from offering it is with regards to sattvic devathas (sri rama, tirupathi balaji, maa saraswati as such examples). Even for these devathas, you will observe that the temples have specific places near the dhwaja sthambham where bali is offered regularly.
Here is one more clear example of what chandrasekharendra sarasvati swami mentioned about animal sacrifices in bali.

In the concluding passage of the Chandogya Upanishad where ahimsa or non-violence is extolled you find these words, "Anyatra tirthebhyah". It means ahimsa must be practised except with regard to Vedic rites.
Considerations of violence have no place in sacrifices and the conduct of war.
If the ideal of non-violence were superior to the performance of sacrifices, it would mean that "sacrifices are good but non-violence is better". The performance of a thousand sacrifices must be spoken of highly but the practice of non-violence is to be regarded as even higher: It is in this sense that the Kural stanza concerning sacrifices is to be interpreted. We must not also forget that it occurs in the section on renunciation. What the poet want to convey is that a sanyasin does better by abstaining from killing than a householder does by conducting a thousand sacrifices. According to the sastras also a sanyasin has no right to perform sacrifices.
There are several types of sacrifices. I shall speak about them later when I deal with "Kalpa" (an Anga or limb of the Vedas) aaand "Grihasthasrama" (the stage of the householder). What I wish to state here is that animals are not killed in all sacrifices. There are a number of yagnas in which only ghee (ajya) is offered in the fire. In some, havisyanna (rice mixed with ghee) is offered and in some the cooked grains called "caru" or "purodasa", a kind of baked cake. In agnihotri milk is poured into the fire; in aupasana unbroken rice grains (aksata) are used; and in samidadhana the sticks of the palasa (flame of the forest). In sacrifices in which the vapa of animals is offered, only a tiny bit of the remains of the burnt offering is partaken of - and of course in the form of prasada.
One is enjoined to perform twenty-one sacrifices. These are of three types:pakayajna, haviryajna and somayajna. In each category there are seven subdivisions. In all the seven pakayajnas as well as in the first five haviryajnas there is no animal sacrifice. It is only from the sixth haviryajna onwards (it is called "nirudhapasubandha") that animals are sacrificed.
"Brahmins sacrificed herds and herds of animals and gorged themselves on their meat. The Buddha saved such herds when they were being taken to the sacrificial altar, " we often read such accounts in books. To tell the truth, there is no sacrifice in which a large number of animals are killed. For vajapeya which is the highest type of yajna performed by Brahmins, only twenty-three animals are mentioned. For asvamedha (horse sacrifice), the biggest of the sacrifices conducted by imperial rulers, one hundred animals are mentioned.
It is totally false to state that Brahmins performed sacrifices only to satisfy their appetite for meat and that the talk of pleasing the deities was only a pretext. There are rules regarding the meat to be carved out from a sacrificial animal, the part of the body from which it is to be taken and the quantity each rtvik can partake of as prasada (idavatarana). This is not more than the size of a pigeon-pea and it is to be swallowed without anything added to taste. There may be various reasons for you to attack the system of sacrifices but it would be preposterous to do so on the score that Brahmins practised deception by making them a pretext to eat meat.
Nowadays a large number of animals are slaughtered in the laboratories as guinea-pigs. Animal sacrifices must be regarded as a little hurt caused in the cause of a great ideal, the welfare of mankind. As a matter of fact there is no hurt caused since the animal sacrificed attains to an elevated state.

For all those who are placing sentiment and namby pamby emotions above scripture , here are one of the two greatest seers, Ramanujacharya and Madhavacharya have to say about Bali Vidhan.
here is what Ramanujacharya says in the Sri Bhashya, his commentary on the Brahma Sutras:
it is not so, on account of scriptural statement. For Scripture declares that the killing of sacrificial animals makes them to go up to the heavenly world, and therefore is not of the nature of harm. This is declared in the text, 'The animal killed at the sacrifice having assumed a divine body goes to the heavenly world'; 'with a golden body it ascends to the heavenly world.' An action which is the means of supreme exaltation is not of the nature of harm, even if it involves some little pain; it rather is of beneficial nature.--With this the mantra also agrees: 'Thou dost not die, thou goest to the gods on easy paths; where virtuous men go, not evil-doers, there the divine Savitri may lead thee.' An act which has a healing tendency, although it may cause a transitory pain, men of insight declare to be preservative and beneficial.

And here's what Madhvacharya says in this excerpt from his Dvaita commentary on the Brahma Sutras:
It may be said that sacrificial work involves injury to life, and as such it is productive of sin and consequently of misery, and that, therefore, it is not to be performed. But this objection is to be refuted on the ground that the injury to life involved in holy duties is permitted by the word (scripture); for the Varahapurana says, "To do harm to any life except as enjoined by scripture is really productive of sin and evil consequences; on the other hand, no evil consequences possibly arise from the act of killing permitted by the Vedas."
I will not listen to you, not these acharyas, and definitely not vedas when it comes to Tantra Shastra. Vedacharya is the primary level.
There are puja where Bali is not even physically done. Just the animal is sacrificed with mantra. That animal will be dead in few hours. Who took the life???

Veg me hamare ganna, kaddu , ye sab bali dia jata hai. Non veg me it starts with pegion, then goats and finally buffaloes. Depends on how strong u want the worship force. Finally extreme is where u give bali of urself. Tantrik shastra me there are tantriks who give own blood also.

Neo organisationa like Arya Samaj etc. have caused a lot of havoc in the sphere of understanding of shastras correctly. They project a half baked understanding of everything they think is Dharma and expect the world to bow to that. Traditional texts and sampradays always ha e an answer and it is them that should be approached to have a correct picture of what is what. Sentiments exist in the realm of humans. I'm from UP. And In my Clan and in the entire ancestral lineage. Since 18th century. As per the records. We Do Durga Puja with Vaishanav Padhatti and we are prohibited for using Vam paddhati for Puja. Vam padhhati is allowed only in tantrik families. But in Pandits it's a sin. Tantra yantra mantra. Power is equally gained in form of siddhi with both methods.

Shaktas have to schools or shakas one is Kalikula Shakta Sampradaya the other is Srikula Shakta Sampradaya . In Kalikula Goddesses Rajrajashree Tripura Sundari or Kali Tara is mulashita Devi and pashu Bali is an integral part of it be you from any clan or Varna . In Srikula Devi Lalita Parameshswari or Lakshmi is Mulashita Devi and you can worship her in dakshinachar vidhi by offering Bali of Coconut or kushmanda.

@@tusharsharma5200 that's what I wrote there are two shakas in Srikula Shakta Sampradaya dakshinachar vidhi you can offer coconut or kudhmanda ( white gourd) in Bali but in Kalikula Shakta Vamachar Vidhan pashu Bali is an integral part as the same is mentioned in our Shashtras and puranas. In Kalika Puran and Devi Mahatmya , Chandi paath there are chapters called Rudhiradhyay where specification of animals and rituals , weapons used are given in description . It is a hypocrisy for a majority of even non vegetarian people within Hindu society to oppose Bali . We can't be above our Shashtras , the Vaishnav interference of one God supremacy , one way of worship one book is a deterrent to the very basic concept of Sanatana where there are major 6 sampradayas and each has their own way of worship n rituals .

In buddhism also there is a anecdote where sage gets akashvani to re do their sadhana again in correct ways…. In nepal Guru rinpoche and shiva they have lots of same pilgrimage and people treat them as one. It’s him guru rinpoche who brought and taugh tantra in tibetan buddhsim and he is said to be in this world till date.
In uttarakhand, we have lot of devi, devta s who require bali. We consider it very pious.

यहाँ प्रसाद के रूप मे बकरे का मीट दिया जाता है हर किसी को. जो भी सांसारिक इच्छाओ की पूर्ति के लिए बलि देते हैँ इन देवताओं को वो उनकी इच्छाएं पुरी करते हैँ देवी देवताओं की पूजा का मोक्ष से कोई लेना देना नहीं इसीलिए भगवदगीता मे कहा गया है एक मात्र निर्गुण परमात्मा की शरण लेने को वो सब गुणों से परे है भगवदगीता मे सब देवताओ की उपासना और उनका फल साफ साफ बता दिया गया है सत्व गुनी उपासक सत्व देवताओं को प्राप्त होते हैँ रजो गुनी उपासक पितरो को पाते हैँ और तामसिक उपासक तामसिक देवताओं और भूत प्रेतो को प्राप्त होते हैँ लेकिन सभी देवी देवता और उनके लोक पुनरावृति हैँ नाशवान हैँ किन्तु जो मुमुक्षु ज्ञानी होते हैँ वो केवल मोक्ष की ओर जाते हैँ और ब्रह्म को प्राप्त होते हैँ इसीलिए मनुष्य तीनो गुणों से ऊपर उठ कर केवल निरगुण परमात्मा की शरण गति ले 😎इसके लिए कर्म योग से ज्ञान योग और ज्ञान योग से भक्ति योग की ओर जाने का निर्देश दिया गया है भक्ति का अर्थ किसी साकार रूप या नाम की भक्ति नहीं बल्कि पूर्ण समर्पण से है केवल निर्गुण परमात्मा की. इसीलिए ध्यान का मार्ग ही परमात्मा का मार्ग है जिसे जीवन को सफल करना है वो परमात्मा के मार्ग पर जाये जिसे सांसारिक इच्छाओ की पूर्ति करनी है वो देवताओं के मार्ग पर जाये सबको अपनी स्वतंत्रता दी गयी है 😎

Bali is not mandatory.. If it was then Sree Ramkrishna Paramhansh would also mention it to his disciples and would have started Bali in Dakshineshwar Temple.

Even till my great grandfather's time the eldest male of our family used to offer two male chhag balis on sandhi kaal of Ashwin Durga Pujo. Then Bengal got divided and many families had to leave everything behind. Yet they succeeded to pass on to their progeny the understanding and the necessity of pashu bali. Most of our Modern 'Sanatani' youths do not understand the meaning of Pashu Bali and end up with emotions. Bali is Very Important in Shakta Kalikul sect.
Shakta granth like Kalika puran and Tantras have depper and high level knowledge which cannot be percieved easily by normal ppl. Tantra is not a random day to day life factor to be understood.

Our scriptures have always referred to Balividhan and till few decades nobody used to question the Bali Ritual. Following are few references:
12th chapter of Chandipaath/Durga Saptasathi:
"jānatājānatā vāpi bali pūjāṃ tathā kṛtām।
pratīkṣiṣyāmyahaṃ prītyā vahni hōmaṃ tathā kṛtam ॥11॥"
Meaning: When bali and puja is offered to Durga with or without knowledge of rituals it is still accepted by the Goddess Herself**
Also in other references Vyasa discusses the issue of animal sacrifice near the end of Adhyaya 3 Pada 1 of the Brahma Sutras:
If it be argued that rites (invoking killing of animals) are unholy, we say, no, since they are sanctioned by scriptures.
And all the commentators I have come across take this to be a statement that animal sacrifice is not immoral and does not generate bad karma. This is what Adi Shankaracharya says about this in his Advaita commentary on the Brahma Sutras:
"We proceed to refute the remark made by the pûrvapakshin that sacrificial works are unholy because involving harm done to animals ... Now from scripture we derive the certain knowledge that the gyotishtoma-sacrifice, which involves harm done to animals (i.e. the animal sacrifice), &c., is an act of duty; how then can it be called unholy?--But does not the scriptural precept, 'Do not harm any creature,' intimate that to do harm to any being is an act contrary to duty?--True, but that is a general rule, while the precept, 'Let him offer an animal to Agnîshomau,' embodies an exception; and general rule and exception have different spheres of application."

In bengal, women don't handle even household Chal Kumro (Ash Gourd).
Evertime my mom had to cut a ash gourd, he use to ask my father to do it. If my father was somehow not around, she use to ask me to give the initial cut.

As a semi rural guy from Bengal, I have deep respect for Bali pratha. When I was young my father used to bring the meat Prasad from nearby Maa Manasa temple Bali. We had it with great affection for Maa. Later on this invoked a sense of gratitude and respect for non veg food in me and whenever I consume non veg, I do it with gratitude for the creature which laid its life to feed me.

First of all, understand that gods (because Hindus are aware of multiple divine beings of various categories and gradations) do not ‘NEED’ your Bali, nor do they need you… it is you who needs the gods and their blessings and when you want to connect with deities you follow established processes (vidhans). Process that have been set down by our Rishis and drashtas from ancient times i.e all the puja paddhatis that you follow today whether that includes Bali or not. Irrespective, you are following some set processes as per Shastras. Depending on the Devata/Devi and his/her roopa we may have to offer bali if thats what the shastras advise. If you are going consider yourself so important and qualified that you can overturn vidhans of those shastras esp when the same balividhan has been approved, accepted and encouraged by stalwarts of Hindu dharma across sects and ages then you really have to be fooling yourself. These ate process manuals that you either follow in its entirety or not at all, you don't get to pick and choose some parts depending on what your just feel which is a product of your own environment and upbringing, you are a speck of dust in front of rishis and devatas who have passed these on.
There are broadly 2 lines of thought when it comes to opposing Bali vidhana - 1. Its cruel, basically makes you feeble thinking of the act, and 2. What is acheived by doing this, essentially the efficacy of the vidhana
1. The first reason that centres around cruelty is nothing but the manifestation of the weak heartedness of Hindus (if the opposition is coming from within the hindu individuals). Whether they are vegetarian or non-vegetarian, these folks essentially balk at the thought of killing and come up with ‘if she is a mother she wouldnt want anyone killed’ logic to hide their feebleness, which is an utterly moronic stance… mother nature is also mother which gets rid of millions of beings in a year to maintain the balance of creation, Maa Durga killed Mahishashur, if that sounds too mythical, even Shri Krishna the asked for bali of Barbarik for the right cause. The Divine mother (or father for that matter) is not the same as human mother/father so actions of humans can not be used to superimpose on their expected behaviour. Having said that, a human mother who feeds her children by cooking fish/chicken/mutton/plants is totally fine with the killing of those beings for the sake of her child, a father would kill if needed for his child. The overarching principle in case of judging violence is Dharma and Shri Krishna settles that very well in Gita. Anything that’s prescribed in shastras is in line with dharma so is Bali. And if you are ready to abandon shastras then you are not a practicing hindu and your opinions count as much as your opinion of when the sun should rise or set.
2. The efficacy question - what does it achieve. Honestly this is difficult to prove like how you prove theorems of geometry and rhs = lhs type methodology. I can make up some scientific sounding logic using blood and prana and yada yada but a better approach would be look at the long term effects of groups that offer Bali (albeit with different names/forms). Pratapshaali Hindu kings have always done animal sacrifices before and after major military expeditions, famous being ashwamedh yagna, rishis have done Bali from ancient times, even the dacoits of bengal are known to offer Bali for their enhancement of power, in recent history Muslims have been doing their own type of bali (halal) for more than a thousand years and you can see their growth of their power and influence globally. Whether you are on side of dharma or not if you seek power and vigour as a individual upasaka or as a group and you seek that through the blessings of a Ugra devata (offcourse you need a ugra devata if vitality is your objective) then Bali allows that blessing to flow to you, forget about how the act of doing and watching bali itself forges your nerves stronger and makes you a stronger individual/group. So Bali (as per shastras because that is the time testes method thats been passed on to us) when/where required has to be revived as a practice so that the hindu society achieves the vitality it needs so badly tight now.
There would still be people who can not stomach this and are going to whine, no worries evolution will do its job whether you are a hindu or muslim or christian so the weak hearted ones will be weeded out in time and its for everyone to choose where they want to be. For the ‘sattvic’ types - remember the path to sattva goes through rajas, you dont go from tamas to sattva directly, and dont fool yourself that you are already sattvic. The only opposition I dont have an answer for is from other faiths because they are doing what they should be doing - weakening hindu dharma by promoting timidity among hindus and if hindus by ans large fall for it then they deserve to be chewed up by the wheel of mother nature because she will take her Bali whether you like it or not… Jai KaalBhairava 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

In each instance they were warned by the maha Vidya devi herself multiple times either in visions or dreams on why the offering of pashu Bali was stopped?. How dare she was disrespected in that manner?. After these occurrences, pashu Bali was resumed immediately.

In my family kali pooja is taken quite seriously.
I m from western UP. And by family i mean whole family. The big family, in which u know ur 3rd and 4th cousin as well. Like we cd easily connect with each other through our great great grand father.....for such a normal farmer family ,,,it was quite astonishing for me. So i m modern educated person. Once i attended this kali pooja in my village. Literally the whole village participated becoz its a yadav village. I was shocked to see a real sacrifice.
Then everyone doing something. Like they know what to do. If u ask them why they doing, they say they dont know. Thats how ancestors did.
One fascinating thing is , they cook it and then whole family eat it like its a prasad.
And mind u this is a custom in the family where majority are strict vegeterians. So on that day, everyone has to consume the prasad. Women wd just taste it formally. Few men wd eat it properly. I also tasted non veg first time there.
Some people hav just oversimplified our culture. Our culture is so great and advance that they know on certain lower levels everything is a taboo and on certain higher levels nothing is a taboo. The concept of good and bad , divine and evil , everything is everywhere all at once. And nothing is black amd white. Its all grey.
From that day i hav kept an open mind. I learned that its foolish to conclude things and pass absolute statements abt anything becoz we dont know anything COMPLETELY.
So its really ignorant to pass judgements abt a practice just becoz u concluded in ur little ignorant mind that its animal cruelty.
The priest knew me personally so i asked him respectfully the same thing, isnt it wrong to kill innocent animals for devi worship. He said: " tell me does nature kills thousands of humans and animals in a day when it wants??? Yes. So is nature murdering innocent people? Can ur law put nature behind bars ?? The. He laughs....
He added: " every animal that dies in such a manner in a proper sacrifice ritual done by advance worshippers, is immediately confirmed to get a human life"
To ur eyes it was cruelty, to that animal's soul, it was blessing
Just like how Muslims defend by saying ki jannat me hoor milengi. And on the name of jihad, they kill and convert stating that Allah asked them to grant peace to kaafirs. It’s okay to have religious beliefs, but only till the time you know the truth to the core. Till the time goddess doesn’t ask you to perform something or shows you how the animal’s soul will achieve moksha or how’s the animal being sacrificed is going to repeat the process of birth or how the animal was meant for this sacrifice or the Devi herself doesn’t clear doubts and ignorances, it’s tough for me to stand by this process. I need to know the truth or I must build immense trust on the goddess to do this process. I love Hinduism but animal slaughter and standing by it without understanding the core is something that I can’t agree upon. I have utmost trust on Maa Kali but not on the people who do the upaasna. And if animal sacrifice is that important then why did Ramakrishna not support this? He was one of the biggest upasaks.

The greatest Kali bhakt of all time was Shri Ramakrishna Paramhansa. He never supported nor gave any bali of animal. He had tremendous kindness for all animals. Once he cried and said someone is beating me with stick, a cow's calf was hit by a stick, he could feel that calf's pain in his own body. Bali is ethically very very wrong.

Please quote your reference-that ramakrishna paramhansa did not support sacrifice. Also a priest (purohit) does not give the bali, so ramkrishna -who was the priest at dakshineswar,did not give the bali himself.
Dakshineswar Mandir use to have Bali Vidhan, Shri Ramakrishna Paramhansa asked the people to stop this pratha. But I still believe that in Shakti Puja Bali Vidhan is necessary.
Also stop consuming animals alright ?
