It was so clever to use Anais as the final piece in the puzzle, not only because there *was* no copycat of her, but because she’s the only one small enough to unlatch the truck. I always wondered why she was my favorite character when I was little...
It's because of a Chinese law where each familly can have only *one* child (But last year this law was abolished and now the limit is of *three* children)

Man, I love this show so much! After learning that 'The Copycats' was supposed to make fun of a rip-off, it makes watching the episode better!
Best thing that Saber didn't mention is that the original storyboards for The Copycats actually used the original Miracle Star character designs for the Copycat family. Which means that the attack could've been EVEN more direct.
Remember that Darwin isn't a kid, but a pet that grew legs. Did the analogue for Darwin also develop in this way? Could it be that the Anais analogue *did* exist but was *removed* from the family when Gua Gua came around because China values sons more than daughters, and that's what Gumball was hinting at by her blurred out photo on the family profile page? _This has pretty dark potential._
I guaran-fucking-tee that's exactly why they didn't clone her. They figured with the 2 children law, someone had to go, and who better to be omitted than the female character. Bit of a tangent, but I can't believe people in China still think this way, despite seeing the consequences of a disproportionate amount of males to females. 🤔
@@GarkKahn Many people believe it's already starting. The release of the Chinese census data was delayed and its results are believed to be inaccurate.
Gua Gua (Darwin’s knockoff) got renamed to Ribbit in “The Knockoffs”, which I find kinda clever, since “guagua” iirc in Chinese is an onomatopoeia for the sound a frog makes, like “ribbit”. Kiki got renamed to Chi Chi though, and I’m not sure why.
Because the name was phonetically spelled “QiQi”(if you referred to the direct Chinese phonetic translation), but pronounced as “Chi-Chi”. The “Kiki” happened because Saber butchered the transcription(or just good old transcription error idk)
I immediately thought of the panel of OG Dragonball where Roshi references Chi-Chi's Name beikg the Japanese term meaning breasts and I still can see it tbh

One thing I liked about Gumball was how it bridged the gap between one-off episodes and and over arching stories, like how Tina eased up a little to Gumball and Darwin in later episodes after the one where they finally got to know each other a bit more and made up for rivalries they had in the past, just to name one example. That direction with how the show's episodes were structured and plotted out really lend itself to the overall Advent-Garde style Gumball was known for.

I worked on a Chinese show, back in 2015. The way you went around the brother sister thing is by making them twins. You were allowed to keep your twins during the one child policy. Which in 2015 when I worked on Sibe, I think in cities was relaxed. Our show was set in the 90s Shanghai so that was why we had to resort to that.
My favorite adult joke in the show is when Rocky tells his dad to give a group of kids some toys, only to pick his dad up from jail later saying "Please don't tell me I had to specify Children's Toys."
one episode that was on yesterday that got me was the one where Nicole wants to get Gumball to his full potential and when Darwin whistles the mating call of the bird it just smacks into the window
As a Gen Z’er, “Phineas and Ferb” and Gumball are the two biggest nostalgic shows for me. I actually didn’t realize until fairly recently that the episode of the show where the Waterson’s have to deal with a bunch of doppelgängers of them was actually intended as the writers’ response to Miracle Star. That makes that episode so much more funny.
I’m a Gen Z too, I used to watch a lot of shows during that time growing up, including Gumball. It was WEIRD and chaotic and it caught my attention, pretty much anything weird does that- TTG (yes I used to watch that show, but now I hate it), Adventure time (only saw a few episodes like 3 or 4 but it left an impact on me) Clarence, Steven Universe (was my favorite show in 4th grade), PPG (both the original and 2016 reboot, I actually think the reboot is better than TTG)
How to prevent China from touching your copyrighted material: plaster “Free Tibet” and “Taiwan is a country” on all your material. They wouldn’t touch that if their lives depended on it.
I wish the creators from Amazing World of Gumball could sue them; however, it’s a complicated process to file a copyright infringement lawsuit internationally. Overall, it was a hilarious episode the way creators fireback at them.
Chinese courts don't uphold international copyrights, even then, as much as it's a shameless ripoff, it's still different enough that it wouldn't count as infringement in the US either. The copied the style and tone, but the characters are different.
I remember Gumball also did use a scene from Little Panda Fighter in an episode where they realise they're too poor to afford the proper versions of things and could only afford bootlegs, such as the "Game Child". (Also, I'm pretty sure they referred to it as "How To Ratatoing Your Panda" in the episode.)
They basically bring both ratatoing and little panda fighter character model as their own animation(the panda farting to the mice is not in the movie),also both of the studio who made these cannot sue CN mainly they're knew they're poor and even it worked,it wouldn't take long that movies they made are rip offs
The so-called clips of "Little Panda Fighter" that he "displayed" in this episode are actually those exact clips from that Gumball episode that you're referring to which makes it even funnier
i love that they referenced not only little panda fighter but ratatoing as well (while also probably using the 'how to train your dragon' title format as well to add to the joke)
I think you forgot one very important thing about why Warner didn't bother to sue them. You might be right with what you said about it not being worth the effort but I'm sure there is a even bigger and more important reason. The chinese market is HUGE when it comes to movie theater releases and the chinese government probably told Warner they could no longer show their movies in China if they want compensation for the Gumball rip-off.
You also forgot that Cartoon Network had to ask Miracle Star to make sure that, ironically enough, the Chinese company wouldn't sue Bocquelet for copyright infringement.
@@deviantartguy0 I'm assuming they meant that for CN to be able to make an episode of TAWOG calling out Miracle Star, CN had to contact the creators of Miracle Star so they don't sue CN.
Do you think the laws only work one way or something? If we as North Americans couldn’t dispute American copyright against a Chinese company stealing our IPs, why could China be allowed to do the exact same thing?
The Eater food one is based loosely around Darwins girlfriend (she wasn't yet at the time it was made) taking over Gumballs body to eat since, well, she's a ghost, and possessing someone was the only way she could eat, and she made him eat till he was obese. The musical one is also where Darwin was actually an amazing musician, and again, Gumball was also bad in it too. The movie disk one is when they had to essentially return a rented movie they got but ruined it, and tried to fake it and return it later.
Its also feels like they ripped off "Evil food eater conchita" a song that has no connection to gumball whatsoever. In the song, the lead goes on gluttony rampage to eat everything that ever exists, to the point where she ended up eating herself
@@bearerofbadnews1375 That's why it's one of my favorite episodes of Gumball. Just the sheer, unapologetic roasting the show had with its ripoff was so brilliant and hilarious!
Honestly, the mention of the Copycats was a given with how it mocked the hell out of it but the Copycats originally planned on using the cast of Miracle Star wholesale with them going by their names and designs. Though ironically, the show’s legal advisers wanted to avoid a lawsuit.
Gumball exceeded due to its team, every part of it. Writers absolutely nailed it and made some of the most memorable jokes in Cartoon Network’s history, animators made it gorgeous and memorable, and voice actors really made the characters something else. This show is timeless.
It must have taken every fiber of saber's being to avoid saying "mommy milkers" in regards to that character design choice. We were all thinking it, it's okay.
I stopped watching cable when Gumball came out, but that clapback with The Copycats makes me so damn proud of the original creators. I hope more animators can do the same to their ripoffs.
I'm 31 and took time to watch it. It's very entertaining visually and structurally. Essentially, "what if the Simpsons were up to date, META, creative, and not overstaying their welcome/relying on pop culture" - the answer is Gumball.
Exactly Watching the ripoffs fall off that bridge was amazing But we'd still get the satisfactory ending because they still wouldn't have a third child Unless the merge of Darwin and anais was small and mostly smart like anais
Mom just a letter (actually probably an entire character or two) from being Chun-Li I suddenly got a strange urge to browse Miracle Star Mom on that funny green website
It's a good thing the original creator and the crew who worked on _The Amazing World of Gumball_ were made aware of Miracle Star plagiarizing the show that they satirized the Miracle Star characters in the episode, "The Copycats".
The fact that this is basically a milk commercial is so wild to me. Like I'm almost impressed how much energy they put into coping Gumball, almost coping scene for scene, just for milk! Also to all Chinese viewers out there I want to ask if you know how this milk tastes? Like is it tasty?
That actually sounds like a really fun show. If Ben bocquelet ever wanted to do another show like gumball (which seems like it was really fun to work on) he could use that original pitch to create a spiritual sequel. With the limits of age restrictions out of the way, I’m sure there’s a lot of potential for chaos.
The designs in miracle star are actually pretty cute. Like the Gumball clone is nice to look at and I think they could have had a great show if they… made their own show. Not a copycat ad. Also the Gumball episode taking the chance to switch voice actors right at the end was incredible. Perfect,
Ngl, I was such an unobservant kid that I didn't realise they switched voice actors, and I completely missed the joke of them saying "we're irreplaceable". Now I freaking love it, and the two other switches were also genius.
Can we talk about the clever shots against the little panda fighter in the episode? Gumball actually roasted that one too, when Gumball was complaining about having a bunch of bootleg ripoff stuff.
This is the first time I've ever heard of this rip off, and honestly, just looking at the visuals in this video, there's actually some decent talent behind the animation and character design. Usually the character design in these ripoffs is nightmare fuel, or at least mediocre at best. But here, the character design is actually on point. And while the animation isn't great, it's not bad. Though I wouldn't be surprised if the lack of better animation was simply due to deadlines and rushing, because there's actually some potential here. Whoever worked on Miracle Star does have potential. Just get some extra talent and great writers, and these guys actually could make something fun and original. But alas, it's a Chinese ripoff. The sad truth is there's potential here that will likely never be truly realized, which really sucks.
I wouldn't give the animation that much credit, they literally copied some scenes and poses frame by frame. They'd really have to be on a time crunch to make it look bad when they took directly from the original source.
@@SpicyButterflyWings Or they weren't payed enough for more efforts. But we are talking mostly about character designs. Now, I'm not interested in gumball OCs, but I like the diverse characters in the copied show.

I feel this on a whole new level. I don't really watch Gumball, but I can totally understand having thieves stealing and ripping off. A couple months back, I had someone take my artwork and copy pretty much everything from my characters and so on. And worst, they were getting a profit off of it on an app. Plus, the thief was from another country too. The rip offs were so bad that my friend and I actually thought up of characters based on these rip offs. To see Gumball do the same had me laughing and respect Gumball for that.
I loved the copycats episode, even before knowing all this information Especially when the Wattersons said "get in your stupid car, and don't come back" It was like a message telling China "quit copying our show, and stay away" :)
I remember watching Copycats on TV and I thought it's just another one of those chaotic episodes, which I loved and enjoyed. BUT I had NO IDEA that it is actually based on Miracle Star, a copycat of Gumball in China, I have never heard of it until I saw your video. That episode just became so much better with its jokes and jabs, great job animation and writers team of AWOG, loved it. Thank you Saberspark for making this aware! AWOG is my favorite show in that era along with Adventure Time and Steven Universe.
Jeez, even the episodes of Miracle Star he described sounded like the inspiration could be directly linked back to specific Gumball episodes! The food eating one is a cross between the lazy-off with their dad and Carrie possessing Gumball to eat endlessly, the cello playing one sounds like they read the synopsis for the Swanny Whistle episode, the DVD one is DEFINITELY based on the dad episode of Gumball, they even try to film their own version to replace it!!
I love how I the end, the Watersons survived because they had ONE additional child. That's both hilarious but also kinda fucked up once you know the context of WHY there is no Anais. I also wanted to add there is some irony in this all starting from ads. If I remember correctly, Gumball and its characters exist because most of them were failed ad concepts the crew compiled together. So this all starting from an ad just feels like some weird other world prophecy.
The funniest thing Saber is that this episode with these ripoff characters became its own episode (or season) I think where the ending of the episode factors down to China's two child law / policy in 2015. I mean, I still didn't see that plot twist until the very destructive end of the episode...there was some foreshadowing, but I keep forgetting about the key details.
Fun fact: Way back in 2015 I was a huge fan of The amazing world of Gumball. And I also watched Miracle star(for some reason I don’t remember) even though I couldn’t understand what they were saying. Also by watching episodes of The amazing world of Gumball in English (I’m from Sweden by the way) I learned English and became a pro at it in school.
I love how you use the "How to Ratatwang Your Panda" footage from Gumball whenever you mention the Little Panda Fighter. I guess it's an accurate enough representation.
I love how companies dunk on ripoffs. Like how in super meat boy and meat boy forever, team meat added PETA’s tofu boy as a secret character and made him the worst character in the games due to his iron deficiency.
You know two of those episodes you mentioned seem like either direct ripoffs or heavily “inspired” by episodes of gumball. Like the food contest one feels really close to the the episode where gumball lets the ghost character use his body so she can try food again (mainly the stomach demon things at the end), and the dvd breaking one is literally a ripoff of the pilot episode where gumball and Darwin destroy a rental DVD, and try several things to get away with it one way being recreating the movie they destroyed.
I think my favorite detail from this show is the fact that the brother is named "Darwin" because he's a fish with legs. Very clever on the part of the writers
@@princeOpalite3650 I'm probably butchering this, but Darwin's theory of evolution explains that fish grew legs and that over thousands of years lead to life on land
I just wanna say that as an ABC, I apologize. Also, I noticed how almost every time I watch a Chinese dub of a western animated film (I usually pull up the dub to watch with the rest of my family sometime after watching the og), the voice acting is… honestly ATROCIOUS. If you watch a live-action chinese show and compare to any animated Chinese show (or compare a live-action Chinese dub with an animated dub) there’s a stark difference in tone, even if you don’t speak Chinese mandarin. It’s really forced, disingenuous, and reeks of stereotypical “American English dub for anime.” Maybe it’s my hypersensitivity to noise and tone, but I seriously can’t stand it.
Dubbing and translation are a part of the media industry a country has to develop just like any other. I found that countries that rely largely on their own national productions, (like the US and China) have _terrible_ translations, because simply put, they usually don't need them. People hear most of their shows and films in the original language. Here on Latin America, we've always relied on dubbing for all import of high-profile audio-visual productions so voice actors, even for "cheap" shows are in high demand and competition. Thus we always loved our own versions. They often come up with fitting, clever puns of their own and carry talent up to the task of the original.
@@GreatFox42 American-Born-Chinese! It’s an acronym commonly recognized between East Asians, though I’m not sure about the rest of the world (I could still be assuming too much though xD)
@@Rodrigo_Vega You're right on how Canada defines local productions, but for the US, you should've said "national/domestic productions" because saying "local productions" in US terms would mean just one region or city. There are local stations throughout the US & they can have different content, even if it's the same sort of network. Fox for example was originally a LOT of affiliate stations, so each local affiliate could make their own content for their local station. Sure, they aired many of the same shows such as The Simpsons, but it wouldn't just be that. It was especially the case for when it came to Fox Kids, which every affiliate essentially had their own, completely customized Fox Kids Clubs. Even more, there was a thing before UA-cam called public access channels. These were channels where just about any person that had access to a camera & some video editing software or heck, just a camera could get their stuff out there on TV through that local station that was a public access channel. There were many of these throughout the 80s & 90s, though a lot of that content hasn't been preserved that well. For some states, such as Oklahoma, Wyoming, Maine, & a few other low-tier states, that public access stuff was seemingly about 80% of TV shows that were made in those states & even then, they would usually only air in one specific part of a state, further disconnecting one show from another. Sorry for how long this comment was, I thought I'd explain what the might-be-official-might-not-be United States definition for "local" is.
Never dove much into the ripoff version so nice to be informed of it here. And yeah, the part that Anais wasn't in the ripoff was hilarious. Amazing how China can rip other people's ideas off and yet China itself controls what characters are in our movies when they're released over there.
I honestly think they got rid of the little girl for the same reason they replaced Lillo in Lillo and Stich. They don't like loud girls not being perfect quite and out of sight. (the government. Not Chinese people. They like all places are full of a swath of different people and ideas)
Everyone kind of already knows about this one. I think it's really cute in its own right, but it's just so goddamn hilarious to me that he's literally nothing more than an advertisement.
The Amazing World of Gumball is one of my favorite Cartoon Network shows and from what I can tell is that Miracle Star was actually a thing. I'm glad there was an episode where Gumball and his family encounters the Miracle Star characters. Yeah, that episode was really fun.
I actually saw this episode before knowing about miracle star but somehow I felt like I missed an inside joke. Similar feeling to when you hear friends making a joke you understand but somehow felt it was also an inside joke that you weren't a part of. This episode was how I came to find out about miracle star! Though I could follow along without knowing about the ripoff show. I ended up rewatching the episode and it was even funnier, and the Anise bit made sense because that was the only confusing part.
Great video ! I don't know why, 4:16 made me laugh so much ! The episode of Miracle Star and his brother breaking a DVD and making their own version of the movie is not original either. the name of Gumball episode is "The DVD". In Gumball, the scenario is more focused on them trying to lie and hide to their Mom that they can't bring back the DVD, and the "solution" to remake the movie themselves is a short moment at the end.

What?
@@deviantartguy0 I'm assuming they meant that for CN to be able to make an episode of TAWOG calling out Miracle Star, CN had to contact the creators of Miracle Star so they don't sue CN.

Her name's "Carrie", and they also ripped off the episode with Gumball's brain, but with Kiki's stomach.

Me too, it's a celebration that Miracle Star was over.
Yeah I agree, It saddens me more that the people that did the art probably just worked on it cause a jobs a job. So much talent wasted on a ripoff smh
I wouldn't give the animation that much credit, they literally copied some scenes and poses frame by frame. They'd really have to be on a time crunch to make it look bad when they took directly from the original source.

An ABC?

The Amazing World of Gumball is one of my favorite Cartoon Network shows and from what I can tell is that Miracle Star was actually a thing. I'm glad there was an episode where Gumball and his family encounters the Miracle Star characters. Yeah, that episode was really fun.
Fun fact: There was a 'The Little Panda Fighter' reference in Gumball.
Explain i beg of you
@@aleksaakovic8182 I forget which episode, but Richard wants to watch 'How to Wattatwang Your Panda'.
that was the clip he was playing. I remember turning on the TV and thinking they were airing the Little Panda Fighter on TV
The little panda fighter is by Video Brinquedo, the studio that made Little Cars and dubbed Rugrats All Grown Up into Brazilian Portuguese.
One change that stands out to me is the fact Miracle looks like his dad instead of his mum, like Gumball does.
This show brings back so many memories. Those were good times. Miracle Star was a super copycat
For me, I think the best part of the Copycats episode is that they full on say the words "Women no right to celebrate in republic of people" like holy shit could you really get away with that?
2:09 is actually from Gumball, to make fun of the Little Panda Fighter and Ratatoing. I just find that so funny.
When I turned on the TV I almost thought they were airing the LPF on TV.
The ONLY show where the original made fun of it's Rip-Off! 😂
The Simpsons has made fun of Family Guy before lol.
@@1visualfxguy oh, really?
@@ShadyRK9 yeah really
I like how saber did a better lip syncing with the robot than the writers did with the whole entire show
I love how the gumball creators had a creative idea to destroy the ripoff series

Its finally here...
15:40 As an anime fan, I can confirm, that the voice actors both Japanese and American put their all into their performances.
11:37 - I think that "Noooooo..." was added in later to lessen the blow that the Wattersons led their copycats to a grim and violent DEATH.
China follows what they call the Confucius legal system, where the judge is also the prosecutor and the jury. And, in some cases, executioner
At 4:16 i live how "wipe my shiny metal ass" is better synced than the original audio
sorry to be _that_ person but..
