    Who knew a backing track video would help me understand and apply phrygian mode better than all the long winded lessons and theory videos I've watched. Thank you so much!

      Great backing track! I would still call the F/A just Fmaj7 since the bass is still playing an F but I understand that symbol is referring to the guitar voicing. I'm going to refer my viewers to this track in my videos. Thank you.

    For examples of Phrygian mode's "mood" and a player highly inspired by it, Al Dimeola's early albums "Land of the Midnight Sun" and "Elegant Gypsy" say it best :) I'm always fascinated by the innate tonal structure from culture to culture. We in the Western cultures have the 12-tone system virtually established by J.S. Bach. East Asian cultures use a 5-tone system while Hindi cultures use a 7-tone system. Most fascinating was a melodic chant sung by a woman and girl of the indigenous people of the Amazon region. I heard whole and semitones, but couldn't quite establish the tonal system. That chant/melody may have thousands of years behind it; some innate force tells us what smallest and largest intervals make a "right" song.

      I listened to those Al DiMeola albums (and many after that) over and over again, even though I didn't play the guitar at that time just yet. Music from other cultures is indeed fascinating and beautiful at times, I like the Arabic music and north African music a lot. But...it's hard to learn, when you didn't grew up with the specific tonal system.

    I think some people as well as my self are getting getting confused from a typo in your video....At 1.07 it says F is the root and at 2.59 again it says F is the root....I believe it should be E and is just a typo but my self and others seem to have noticed....Maybe write something in the description or a comment clarifying that it's a typo.....Thanks for the tracks tho....I like that you not only show the chords but also show scale patterns during the video....

    hey quick question, why is F the root if it's called E Phrygian and based off of the C Major scale with E being the first degree of the mode / the 3rd tone of the C Major Scale?

    • @JB19504
      @JB19504 11 місяців тому

      That description is WRONG. It should be E. I noticed that to on the screen near the Mode Patterns. The note that gives it the Phrygian sound is F but the root is definitely E.

    I dont understand. Dimoesnt the Phrygian mode based On E starts with E major ?

    • @QJamTracks
      @QJamTracks  3 роки тому

      The Phrygian mode is a minor mode so the chord on the 1st degree (tonic) is a minor chord. There is a variation of the phrygian scale and that is the phrygian dominant scale (the 5th mode of the harmonic minor scale). This scale does have a major chord on the first degree.

    • @ziedhamrouni5787

  • @michaelmiller1424

    • @QJamTracks
      @QJamTracks  3 роки тому

      In the mode E Phrygian the tonic is E (not F). So you got that right Michael. F is the characteristic note in the E Phrygian mode. Maybe that is what got you confused.

    • @michaelmiller1424
      @michaelmiller1424 3 роки тому +1

      @@QJamTracks Ok, so its the F note that gives the E Phrygian its modal sound. I think I understand now. Thank you for your patience and clarification.

    I'm an ear player. I've got tot the point where it's pretty easy to solo over most music as you start to recognize automatically the intervals between notes that you need to play. Another observation is the fact that a few basic scale shapes will take you very far. Take the notes that fit this and play them over a song written in A Minor. Same shit, different song. You'll see many connections like this in a myriad of backing tracks. C Lydian? Play E minor/Pentatonic over it......modes are pretty easy when you see the patterns. I can play all over the neck using this method, and of course you want to develop your licks and the theory to tie them together, but it's not brain rocket surgery.
