Receipts are necessary for reimbursement forms and taxes. Also proof of purchase if you work in a store (if you work in grocery/retail and buy a drink, you have to have the receipt to show people you aren't walking around with stolen goods.)
What's shocking most to me is aren't these business owners? Aren't they presumably filing some sort of corporation taxes? Perhaps LLC or SCorp? If they're planning to deduct any of these purchases, their tax accountants should always be advising them to keep receipts for at least 3 years, depending on the purchase. The receipt will be required if you ever audited. Your credit card statement will not be sufficient.
