  • In this Holidays and Christmas episode of The Little Things we look at the Electronics Boutique Catalog from 1997. In the 1990s, it wasn’t Christmas until you had a visit to the Electronics Boutique, Babbage’s, Gamestop or Software Etc. in the local mall. The internet was slow and cumbersome, and magazines and catalogs from the gaming and software stores was how many people decided what games they wanted for Christmas. By 1997 the Sega Saturn was all but dead, and Nintendo had introduced the N64 to fight the supremacy of the Sony Playstation. The internet was becoming relatively common, but most people were still having to connect by dial-up, and the slow, simple graphic landscape was ruled by America Online and Netscape. For Computer Gamers, it was a time of triumph. Computer Based gaming was in full swing. Journey back Before some things that should not have been forgotten were lost, and when Star Trek was everywhere, as we look through the Electronics Boutique 1997 Holiday Catalog and remember Christmases long, long ago. Man I remember Office Max also being this place to get PC Games too. Now, that store is just office materials and an average selection of PCs.

Office Max, Best Buy, EB, Software Etc., Babbages and even the big old Media Play stores. There were so many great places to get games back then, and it was fun just making the rounds to see what was out there, and what was coming up. Getting physically out there and searching was part of the magic that is almost totally gone now.
