Kids think AI can do all the work for them but that just isn’t true. In fact, the best advice I heard was a Linked In post a few months ago that said - stop worrying about AI taking your job. It’s the person who knows how to use AI that will take your job. Worry about him if you’re going to worry. And actually, instead - become the person who knows how to use AI and you’ll be safe. I took that advice seriously. I was scared at first because all this AI Chat stuff and AI image generation seemed complicated, and I really couldn’t envision how useful it could be, honestly. I just didn’t get it. But I moved forward anyway, starting with Canva’s design features.
It’s a great jumping off point so if you’re new to this AI world and you want to learn more, login to Canva and watch the video I made, linked below, that covers the new AI features. I went from Canva into MidJourney and then Chat GPT and geez, now I am hooked. The value offered by these tools becomes more and more clear every day. But a very big issue has been looming in my mind about the implications of this on our current education system.
It’s so easy for people to take someone elses hard work, rewrite it with Chat GPT and then call the work their own. So I know that teachers everywhere are totally freaking out and, since I’m not actually a teacher facing those very real problems, I actually think it’s good that AI is ripping a hole into the fabric of public education. This means that schools will need to reform to make school interesting, like offering a variety of courses on content that kids want to learn about. I think we can all think of a time that we learned something very complicated because that complicated thing was going to lead us further on in our passion projects, like writing a comic book or rebuilding a motor, or creating a custom Halloween costume - all of these things require technical knowledge at some point. Anyway, schools can’t keep AI out so hopefully, they will learn how to use it to their advantage. One way to overcome this is to have students present their major projects, like papers. At least then they have covered the material and can maybe extract knowledge from it.
When it comes to AI text to image generation, English teachers really have an advantage here because getting AI to produce high-quality images requires extremely good writing that is descriptive. When writing can really paint a picture, then, well, AI, paints the picture.
