    Always good to have straight forward walkthroughs to demystify getting into stacking.👍

      Cheers Ollie, the YT algorithm doesn't seem keen on it, but I hope it will be useful for those that watch it :)

    Excellent tutorial Chris! - the zooms were really useful throughout too and will be useful no doubt to someone following along on a phone while they try to stack on the PC, nice job mate! :-)

      Hey Luke, cheers mate, I know you must know DSS inside and out so I appreciate you watching! :-) I'm looking forward to seeing more of that beast EQ8 mount of yours! :-) I was out in the Obsy last night trying to get goto working on my EXOS2. No luck really, it just can't handle the 200p because even when perfectly balanced something inside slips and clicks if you try and slew faster than speed 5 out of 9. It's only really good for sidereal tracking. A new mount is on the agenda. Just found confirmation that the noise and slipping is the motors being overloaded: explorescientificusa.com/pages/what-is-that-noisy-ratchet-sound-i-hear-from-my-mount-why-wont-my-mount-move

      @@AstroLaVista Oh man that's a real pain the backside :-(
      All things considered, it may be a blessing in disguise? a nice new mount will serve you well for a long time to come hopefully, and the very best mount is one you don't even need to think about really!
      I know most people have preferences, but all I'll say is you can't go far wrong with Skywatcher mounts - supported by eqmod, asiair etc, and the usual suspects like heq5 & eq6 class mounts are super capable performers!
      Hope you find what you're looking for soon mate!
      All the best,
      Luke

    Hey Chris this is a brilliant tutorial and I loved how you zoomed everything up and was clearly seen! Getting the text etc larger I found this to be fantastic way for those with sight problems so they could easily see tutorial!
    Still you got great looking image of my favourite deep sky object and I look forward to next tutorial.
    Just wondering would this work if you used smartphone instead of dslr? Smartphones are as good as dslrs now and I do plan to use my Huawei p40 smartphone attached to my Bnise telescope and even 72ed ds Pro to see what I can get using star adventurer.
    I hope you do more tutorials on this software for newcomers!
    I hope clear skies this weekend as I'm camping in Highlands and took my Huawei p30pro and 2 nights ago I got good shots of moon at its 50x zoom on phone. Huawei p30pro is fantastic for astrophotography and even star trails.
    Thanks very much for this video tutorial and looking forward to next one! Stay safe buddy and clear zkies!!!

      Hey John cheers, I thought zooming in would be helpful because most peeps watch on a small screen now days. I don't think you can stack smartphone pics in DSS bit a quick search showed that you can with software called starry landscape stacker. There might even be apps for stacking? Glad you're having fun with your phone, take it easy : )

    Hope I can get an answer after so long .. most UA-camrs seem to not bother after a few weeks.
    So I wondered what spec windows laptop I should buy to use this effectively as my Astro machine ??? I’ve been a MacUser for a decade so I’m totally out of touch and would rather not use an emulator but get a machine instead

      Hiya, I swear by HP when it comes to PC's, I've owned several and the ones I've handed down to my kids are still going strong. My Ryzen 5 processor, 8GB RAM machine does a bonza job for all my astro and video editing, although it does have a basic Radian graphics card that must help a bit.
      Go with a SSD solid state drive as they are much faster (to be honest they are probably all SSD drives now days, they nearly all were when I bought this laptop).
      If you want to future proof yourself maybe get a Ryzen 7 or Intel i7, 8-16 gigs of RAM, and say 512GB SSD drive. It majorly depends on budget of course! Hope that helps (p.s. I'm no expert on PC's other than just using them since the 90's)

    Hi Chris could you tell me what the master calabtration files saved in my dedicated dark, lights, flat folders are used for. Also how to use them. Many thanks

    • @AstroLaVista
      @AstroLaVista  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Chris, for example a master dark would be a single frame created from combining all the darks together. Therefore if you decided to restack your data you could load the master dark instead of all the individual dark frames. It saves on storage space and people build up dark libraries for certain temperatures. e.g. if you cooled your camera down to -10C, and took a 5 minute exposure, you could use that master dark again the next time you used the camera at -10 for 5 minute exposures. I'm fairly sure I've got this right, it's been a long time since I've played with dark libraries!

    • @chrissheppard3178

      @@AstroLaVista thank you. So can I put the master dark in DSS, the same was as if I put 20 dark images and just select it as a dark file on the main DSS screen.

    I see that you import the raw images in as TIFF files. Is there much difference between TIFF and FITS files?

    • @AstroLaVista
      @AstroLaVista  2 роки тому +1

      Hi, they are both lossless so theoretically identical quality wise, only TIFF's take up less space as they are compressed. Fits can carry more header info but you can pop info into the file name if needed. Both good formats, personal choice :)
