Once again. Simon has taught me more about history than any class I ever had in school. People I've never heard of and I seek history and love it. If we don't learn history we are doomed to repeat it.
OMG I used to date Benthams descendent during the 80's and 90's, who was also called Jeremy and was one of the founders of the old Dr Who appreciation society. This is why they called their fan conventions 'Panopticons'. LOL
Slightly embarrassed to admit this, but I had no idea who Bentham was before this bio. It was really enjoyable to learn his story from a blank slate. What a remarkable person.
richard bidinger Grat idea I will comment on every video asking for a Simon Whistler Bio and the number petition So today would be Make a Simon whistler biographic petition #1
It's A John Lind, just not THE one he's talking about. A small point, but I love this channel and I don't see how this sort of thing can happen. Probably mis-communication between the Production Staff.
Im reading Prefessor Mark Mazower's book on the Greek Revolution. From his account Bentham was a wee bit unhinged by the 1820s. However he did open London's first gymn, in Leicester Square.
all these references got me to check out what the hell a deathling is. Now I`m hooked. :) After a week of videos I arrived at bethams head and just figured I have to check this place out again and thank all the deathlings for the good promo :)
I read that Jeremy was brought out for the 100th and 150th anniversary and in 2013 for a college meeting. He probably has attended more meetings then some of the living council members.
I'm reminded of that one Horrible Histories episodes which had a skit on Jeremy Bentham, ending with "Words we get from Jeremy Bentham". Words like repeatable, repeatable, repeatable and repeatable.... no seriously.
Ask a mortician bentham's head. Good video dude I love all your videos, asking again can you link some books for further info on some of these topics? Can you do a video on the history of heligoland Germany. I can't find that much information and it's fascinating story
I really think you should do one about Dr. Samuel Johnson. Creating the dictionary doesn't SOUND that exciting but he was a very quirky interesting individual.
Agreed. His trip with Mr Boswell through Scotland is a particularly fascinating story and, as it occurred in 1773, I wonder if Mr Johnson and Mr Benthem moved in the same circles?
Don't know if you already have, but please mark for a future biographical: - Nelson Mandela - Tito - Maradona - And that Richest Chinese guy who owns Alibaba.
I visited Jeremy once (his original head wasn't there but in storage; I heard the story that students of UCL -- which you could mention as associated with him -- stole the original head and tossed it about at a pub; I consider that an odd confirmation of 'the greatest happiness' principle). Definitely cool visit but I couldn't say how tall he ended up being. BTW did you say Joseph Priestley or Jason?
“Though not a philosopher ....” of Course he was a philosopher ! He was the founder of Utilitarianism a school of political economy developed by his wayward disciple JS Mill.
@@brantleyhester6641 The movie didn't address anything, it was nearly all fictional and only loosely based on the truth in the most abstract of ways. An ACTUAL biography would be very welcome given that fact.
Brilliant! UA-cam is awash with garbage about Bentham and Utilitarianism, it is refreshing to find a well researched and well presented video on the topic.
But you said in another video that Americans are the only ones that smile at each other and the world thinks we are weird for that.great video. I was glad to hear his view on animal and womens rights.
I'll have to go read his rebuttal to the US declaration of independence, because here in the US it's treated as a holy document, and I'm really interested in hearing the counter-arguments, being a big Bentham fan.
Fun fact, I go to the medical school at the university he founded, and the nearest other school (and rival) King’s college London, decapitated his head and held in ransom in the 1980’s, with the ransom going to charity. The deans caught wind of it and it was quietly returned. To this day we’re rewarded for stealing signs from the school to put in our bar. I actually know one of the then students who stole it!
@@Iamtheliquor very little known. Most successful manager in EPL. Also knighted by the Queen. If Piers Morgan can get a video, I'd love to hear his as I'm sure a lot of football fans do to
Wow , the show Lost just made a lot more sense, all the names of characters are named after opposing philosophers, one episode is actually called Jeremy Benthem
How do you have a photograph of John Lind? You said he wrote a rebuttal to the Declaration of Independence in 1776. They didn't have cameras back then? At marker ~8:48.
Can we get the boy who protected Benthan’s name? The only way I’m getting into the history books is if one of those little nerds I protected remembers my name.
it's bentham's world and we're all living in it... for better or worse. would like to see a bio about auguste comte, saint simon, and john mill, john stuart mill
I know diagnosing historical figures is questionable, especially when one isn’t a trained psychologist, but nearly every characteristic ascribed to Bentham reminds me of the many people I know with autism spectrum disorder (at the level previously called Asperger syndrome.)
Thank you Brilliant for making this possible! Check out Brilliant here: brilliant.org/biographics

Wow, Bentham was truly aHEAD of his time.
yeah, and I reckon he was an atheist.
Yeah, he couldn't be any more out of place in his own time. He almost sounds like someone from the 21st century.
BENTHAM’S HEAD (yes this a reference to ask a mortician)
We need more Death Positive peeps in here repeating that over and over.
I'm so happy this is the top comment.
Face mask of the deceased goes way back in the past, as far as I remember in bronze age it was already a common practice.
Best sticker ever ;)

They could do the bit where he learned to say the word "behemoth".
I'm curious how at the 8:41 mark you have a *photograph* of John Lind. Isn't this in the mid 1700s?
wrong John Lind
Yeah! That struck me too! I actually am looking at these posts to see if anyone else had the same thought. So I'm not crazy then. Phew!

Bentham, the dude that disliked useless, unjust laws, but hated anybody that decided to free themselves from them.
Good point

Fun fact: Bentham also had a pet cat named Reverend, a pet teapot named Dickie and two sticks named Dobbin and Dapple.
You're right Simon, that last part was both unexpected and eerie. His utilitarianism beat the Egyptian's mummifications.
