Huge Moto Mistake! I will never learn.

  • I seem to have difficulty learning from my previous mistakes and experiences from riding motorcycles. I have yet again demonstrated I lack good judgement and found myself in a very challenging position where I had a limited amount of time to return home after suffering a front flat tire on my Yamaha Tenere 700. After having fix many flat tires, blown out tubes on my KTM 390 Adventure, you would think I would have learned to carry with me all the tools necessary to fix a flat tire. Unfortunately, I never seem to learn. This is a story of what I did to get home when I had very little time and no one to call for help. One piece of kit really saved me and that was an battery operated air compressor. I have found it to be so valuable I am leaving a link below for it if you also need a good portable compressor.

    Glad that you persevered and made it back. I believe that you made the best use of what you had available and didn’t damage your rim and tire by using the compressor. The first mod that I made to my Suzuki DL800DE was to convert the tubed wheels to tubeless. I hate the hassle of tubed tires!

    1978, while riding near B.F.E. Ohio, I ended up with a flat front tire on my 1974 Honda CB500. No tools, slime/cell phones had not been invented yet and no one around for at least 3 miles, I ended up jogging next to the bike while I ran it in 2nd gear for that 3 miles. Tires back then were junk compared to todays tires, so I had to replace the tire and tube. I was young and in shape back then but today I would just let the buzzard have me if I found myself in that same situation.
    Thanks for posting Matt.

    Thanks for an honest recounting Matt, we've all been in similar circumstances one way or another - my last front flat (25psi 😅) was in front of a petrol station and opposite a bus stop, bus arrived five minutes later so went home (free at my age in the UK) got my stuff, went back and fixed it. Reckoning that degree of luck is unlikely to repeat itself I now ride out fully tooled up!

    Good post, thanks for sharing. All of us who have ventured into ADV riding have all done the same things to some degree. In your case, you were on a basic road ride, so I would say even more road riders go out the same way (granted on a street bike you can just plug a leak). Given what you had available and where you were, I would have done exactly the same thing - filled and crawled with the compressor. It worked and you got home safe and that's all that counts. One item I have seen that might have helped you a bit is that "tube snot" stuff (the liquid tube patch) - the jury is out on if it actually works - but in this case it might have allowed you to go a few more miles at a clip before re-airing. One tool I swear by and have carried since day one is Rally Raid's T7 tire wrench. It combines the 3 tools you bought into one tool - easier to carry and use. Another item that is handy is a trail stand. Inexpensive and small, it allows you to prop the front of the bike up via the skid plate to get the front wheel off. Finally, 50/50 MotOz ADV tires have worked well for me too - super thick, stiff side walls might have also allowed you to travel a bit longer on low air. My 2 cents.

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  6 місяців тому +1

      All great suggestions. I was planning to make a big order from Rally Raid and the wheel wrench was on my list. I procrastinated too much. It was just dumb. I know better. Cheers.

    Dude, no judgement here, you did what you needed to do. Interestingly enough the same thing happened to me a few years ago. After trailering my GSA to Pennsylvania, while riding over to North Jersey to see my mother when my back tire started to go flat on Route 80, I was about 50 miles from my trailer😢 on one of the busiest highways in NJ. I kept looking for where the tire was punctured but couldn’t find it. Just like you all I had was my air pump. After pulling over and airing up every mile or so until I made my way back to the trailer, which took about 5 hrs. The next day after removing the rim from the bike I took it to a local motorcycle shop, we removed the tire to check for where it was damaged and couldn’t find anything. after remounting the tire the same thing happened. After a lot of head scratching I called Wood’y Wheel Works in Colorado where I had purchased the Excel Super Laced wheels, told them the story and was immediately informed that they too had found that the Heidenau K60 tires did not place nice with bead seating of their wheels. Who knew😮! Turns out my tool bag would have likely left me in a worse off situation if I had attempted to remove the tire from the rim on that highway, I may have never gotten that tire to hold any air at all in that
    situation. 👍🏾

    Hey Matt, I got a rear flat on my Tenere on its stock tires because I was running too high pressure (34) . The carcase is soft and we were in sharp rocky shaley terrain, a loose rock punched straight through it after an erosion gully, with camping gear on the back. Luckily I had all the gear to fix it, took 2 hours though, breaking the bead was a nightmare, plus I was a bit rusty in the tyre changing department. Since then I install all of my new tyres. If it was a bit softer the carcase may have deflected rather than fracturing, it's a tricky thing off-road pressures. Glad you made it back ok.👍

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  3 місяці тому

      The scorpion tires are some the softest I have seen. I think my pressure was just low enough to allow to flex and pinch. Those tires are terrible offroad tires. Always good to change tires yourself. It's good practice. I hate installing tubes on these wheels. Ugh.

    Hi there Matt, You did what you had to. In that situation you had to think on your feet. I keep some HD cable ties and have used brush and weeds stuffed in a tire along with zip ties to get me off the trail. As a disclaimer I do not know how good that would work on a big ADV bike? Always carry a canister of slime or other foam type sealant together with that compressor and tools.
    If its just a few miles and you’re in a rush it will usually seal enough to get you home and save the tire 🛞.

      Since it was a sidewall pinch I am not sure tire sealant would have worked, but I have since put Ride On in my tubes, which I normally use for balancing. Sealing is am added benefit.
