    Nice to learn that it's normal to s-l-o-w down those last few yards on the 50. I thought a wizard was extending the lanes, especially on fly.

    Tom Jager was actually the first swimmer to ever go under 22.0 in the 50 LCM. He set this record March 24th, 1990, going 21.98 and then 21.81 all within the same day. In the video you say Biondi held the 50 freestyle record for about 10 years. This is incorrect as Biondi never held the record for over two years. You might have been thinking about Tom Jager, who set the world record at 22.12 on August 20th, 1989. He later went on to break his own record two time in the same day on March 24th, 1990, where he broke the record in the semifinals and then reset the same record at finals. From the time he set the record in 1989, he was the holder of the world record all the way up until Alexander Popov set the record at 21.64 on June 16th, 2000. Just wanted to add this because many people forget that Jager was the one who held the world record for one of the longest spans of time. Great video, just wanted to add this, as sprinting history is very cool.

      Hi Shea, correct! Thanks for catching this...it was Tom Jager who held the record for 10 years then Popov took it down in 2000! 21+ is still blazing fast!

    just a question : why linear regression and not other kind of regression? Did you back-test it? I have no idea but just wondering if progression would not become harder and harder over the time. Anyway, many thanks for this video which learnt me a lot, and for all the videos you make. Happy swimming! :-)

    • @fksebati
      @fksebati 4 роки тому +2

      Correct! There are several statistical methods that can be used and all would yield a different result. The way shown here incorporates a slower average rate of improvement from now into the future when the barrier will be broken as compared to the average rate of progression in the last 30-40 years. Hard to tell when the asymptote will be. We'll have to wait a couple decades to see how all these #s play out :)

    • @SebRomUTube
      @SebRomUTube 4 роки тому +1

      You are right, extrapolating too far is non-senses, need to be refreshed later when we will get more data! Another question which came to my mind just as writing this message : do we see the same slowing process in longer races? In open water too?

    • @fksebati
      @fksebati 4 роки тому +1

      @@SebRomUTube I have not looked into those races as much, but I'm confident they will drop in time as well as the 'average rate of swimming' will continue to improve over the next few decades. Will the rate of improvement slow down? probably, time will tell!

    Good video but you left out the Caleb Dressel dropped his personal best in the 50 yard freestyle in 24 hours by one second. That’s critical information. Also daughter is at the age of 41 set the American record in the 50 m freestyle with a timer for 24.07 so she dropped her personal best over the course of her Olympics career over 24 years by about a second and a half.

    That's a very good video. I would love to see more videos about competitive swimming, it would be awesome to see a breakdown of some iconic races or swimmers.
    One idea that comes to mind is exploring why the 2008 OG was a once in a lifetime event for competitive swimming... Going through a bit of the history, the suits, the world records being smashed, etc

    The prediction for the first 19 in 2037 is probably skewed by supersuited times. That world record hasn't been beaten for 15yrs, so i don't think 19 is coming any time soon
