- Watching a young school of fish get swallowed up by a bigger fish is something we’re all used to seeing, but the would-be predator here is actually their mother. She’s not eating them; she's protecting her young by keeping them in her mouth.

It's amazing that they manage to do this without digesting their young!
This is because female doesn't swallow babies, she just hides them in some sort of pocket in back of the mouth
They have a pouch in their mouth though
A few may go to lighten the burden I’m sure lol

in a lot of cases, males do it too, sometimes exclusively. for fish, the mouth is like a hand or something. useful to manipulate the environment, not just for eating.

I forgot how it goes but I believe some other animals lay their eggs where the mother keeps them, then when she takes the eggs into her mouth the eggs will hatch and eventually devour the children she raised so they stay in her mouth and kill her too from the inside out, or I think she just continues to raise the babies that ate her actual family. I forget how it actually goes
