It’s weirdly high quality looking. Like the water, the destruction… it looks almost photorealistic and then you have basic cartoon animals and the juxtaposition really just hurts to look at.
Funny how the only animalistic visual gag in this movie was when the porcupine girl shot out her spikes into the audience... which appearently isn't even a thing they can actually do.

They have absolutely no mechanism whatsoever to shoot them, they can break off accidentally but there is no way for the hedgehog/porcupine to force them out intentionally. Tk; dr: not really, porcupine spikes are basically specialized stiff hair. It can't do anymore than any other mammals hair can. In other words,, basically just stand on end. Shooting is just an old wives tale.

Y'know, this video actually inspired me. I think I have an obsession over "Sing" now. Not because I like it at all, but because I think the concept was wasted, and I feel like it would be such a fun concept to work with. I would not even feel like I've "ripped off" the film, because, as you said, it seems done and unoriginal. The whole film just seems like a writing prompt.

The only bit that stood out to me was the pig husband not being jealous of his wife's singing partner. It was nice to see that after so many years of male characters not trusting their partners.
I partially liked that, in the other hand, throughout the movie he treated his wife as she wasn't there to the point he didn't notice at all she was gone, for me, it came like him just not caring, rather than him trusting on her, which hits different. I really wished for her to leave his husband at some point, I was expecting telenovela type of drama, idk, it would have given some spice to this bland ass movie.

My boyfriend likes the song "Creep". He once sang it to me, and the way he sang so emotionally made me want to cry. I love him more than anything, so hearing him sound like he was going to cry was almost painful.
When I was in the hospital, Sing used to play on the tv in my room. There were other movies that played, but not as often, so I was almost always asleep when other movies played. I had that entire movie engraved in my brain.
The gag with Rhinos is they have extremely bad eyesight and are damn near blind. So directing traffic is ironic, cops as rhinos symbolizes that they are powerful and can enforce the law as well as having a temper, but they're blind, so they never see crime happening or they arrest the wrong people, can also be a play on "justice is blind" So, kinda social commentary on that one. But this is just my inference, it's possible, but not all that likely that illumination did this intentionally.

It totally sounds like Nick is nitpicking when talking about how they don't actually do anything creative with the fact that they're anthropomorphic animals but that's probably the biggest problem with this movie. The fact that the characters are animals mean literally nothing. You could replace all of the models with humans that have noses that are too big and literally nothing would change.

The City of Zootopia was a more diverse atmosphere, with vehicles, gadgets, and buildings specifically for each animal. Whatever city is in Sing is just a generic human city with animals instead of people.
Exactly. A good rule of thumb for this sort of thing is to ask whether the setting would work with humans. If so, the movie is pointless. If not, then you’ve got a specific and unique setting- of course, that doesn’t automatically make it great, but it means that you’re on the right track.

Yeah, they DID make this movie, it was Happy Feet. It was about penguin mating season and was weirdly h*rny for a kids film but at least it was interesting with actual characters. The environmental stuff thrown in at the end was cheap though. EDIT: love how everyone’s hyper fixated on the last sentence and not the actual point. In hindsight, yes there was more of the environmental stuff in the plot than I gave credit for, but I still feel the execution could have been better for the last bit of the movie. Stop commenting about it.
Cynical Person. I remember that movie mostly because of the sexual stuff but I also remember sleeping or just not giving attention to the movie , I remember also waking up only at the terrifying or emotionally moments and the good looking scenes but I don't remember anything about the plot
As far as the sheep swimming: I think that if sheep get submerged under water they have a substantial risk of drowning if their wool gets saturated with water it becomes heavier than it's bouyancy. So a sheep swimming is kind of against it's survival nature. If I remember correctly. Lazy tongue in cheek stories behind subpar animations grinds my gears also. Nuff said.
It was actually from Kingsman: Golden Circle! Taron Egerton plays a spy and Elton John was being held hostage. Good movie! They met on set and Taron had sang that song to get in to school, then this, then rescued Elton John in a movie, to NOW playing him. It's amazing

I find it funny how the Johnny's dad says "I have no son" when Johnny tells him about being part of a music competition, but excitedly yells "THAT'S MY SON" when he sees Johnny performing on the prison TV.
...that's the point. That's called character. He doesn't disown Johnny purely because of the competition but a number of things, though seeing Johnny's talent instead of judging him a failure because Johnny isn't a clone of him leads to the change of heart. The scene makes it clear that Johnny's Dad realises in that moment what stupid mistakes he's made as a father and his resulting regret.

Back when I took creative writing, one of the main takeaways was that if there is a central aspect of a story that can be completely removed and not change the core of the story, then it shouldn’t be there. That’s how I feel about this movie. None of the characters have to be animals, it adds practically nothing.

Also, you may have misunderstood that part in creative writing. What your referring to is a plot element that takes up space in the story, but if you remove it, nothing will change. Here is an example: Imagine there is a car scene in a story, which involves two characters talking about something. It goes on and on, but has absolutely no relevance to character or story. If you take that out, and it affects or shows nothing relevant, then it shouldn’t be there. Them being animals is simply a choice of design and creative choice, rather than actual story plot or writing. The movie was made for children, and talking, cartoonish animals appeal to them a lot more. I mean, asking why they have to be animals is like asking why Mickey has to be a mouse, when he doesn’t eat cheese, live in a hole, or squeak.

I always had mixed feelings about Illumination. They got everything they need to become another Pixar: creative ideas, talented artists, a distinctive animation style, likeable characters and much more. Yet it feels like they kinda minmax with their movies and always go for the safe strategy to get the most money with the least possible risk. And this can make their movies mediocre, and even obnoxious, but I can't help but ask myself: is it really that bad? In a world where most of the animation media belongs to Disney, this may be their only option to gain a foothold and remain independent. To take the least possible risks. I really hope Illumination remains, and once they're more estabilised in the industry, they eventually grow out of this stage to use their full creative potential.
it’s clear there are good and great artists and writers in illumination but i doubt the heads will ever allow them to expand past this potential. because if they did they risk loosing money or not appealing to the audience illumination tries to appeal to, which is tired moms and their children at 3 pm on a saturday

Illumination movies are my least-favorite kind of movies in the animation genre. They are all formulaic and are filled with fart jokes, as well as unfunny, outdated pop-culture references. Their only good movies were Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2. That is about it.

IHE's video on Sing was spot-on. The cast of characters are each made to cover a wide archetype of people so that at least one of them appeals to your average viewer. It is the equivalent of hashtag relatable memes. They aren't characters, they are empty vessels for people to go "oh my God that is so *ME*". Also, the fact that such a huge studio repeatedly reuses background characters in such an obvious way is absurd. I get that it's something most kids won't notice, but even for an average movie-goer details like this can subconsciously take you out of the immersion (not that this film is immersive at all). Third off, why isn't this a short or something? It has no story and spends so much time doing absolutely nothing. Oh wait, because like I said before it has to appeal to everyone and they have to give each bland and unoriginal face a shit ton of worthless screen time! There is almost no animal-based gags either, which comes across as lazy. Yes, shows like Bojack Horseman have anthro characters and only occasionally joke about the different types of animals, but honestly this can not be compared to Bojack Horseman. It's in an entirely different league and this movie has nothing to make up for lack of animal gags.
Oh, 100%. The first few episodes are rough, but it picks up in the second half of the first season, and just keeps getting better and better. As a fair warning, though, it gets REALLY depressing, so I’d recommend watching it in chunks instead of binging all of it!
You notice how little they want you to think when you catch the marketing tricks. Especially when you realize that if you remove all the 'believe in yourself' talk, the gorilla didn't steal the money because he noticed he was still in the competition and could still win it.

So directing traffic is ironic, cops as rhinos symbolizes that they are powerful and can enforce the law as well as having a temper, but they're blind, so they never see crime happening or they arrest the wrong people, can also be a play on "justice is blind"
So, kinda social commentary on that one.

It totally sounds like Nick is nitpicking when talking about how they don't actually do anything creative with the fact that they're anthropomorphic animals but that's probably the biggest problem with this movie. The fact that the characters are animals mean literally nothing. You could replace all of the models with humans that have noses that are too big and literally nothing would change.
Taron Egerton’s cover of I’m Still Standing is probably the only good thing to come out of this movie.
It and the Kingsman scenes were the pieces that aligned for Egerton and his role in Rocketman

The City of Zootopia was a more diverse atmosphere, with vehicles, gadgets, and buildings specifically for each animal. Whatever city is in Sing is just a generic human city with animals instead of people.
Zootopia was made by Disney. Which is why the movie is so good.

Yeah, they DID make this movie, it was Happy Feet. It was about penguin mating season and was weirdly h*rny for a kids film but at least it was interesting with actual characters. The environmental stuff thrown in at the end was cheap though.

As far as the sheep swimming: I think that if sheep get submerged under water they have a substantial risk of drowning if their wool gets saturated with water it becomes heavier than it's bouyancy. So a sheep swimming is kind of against it's survival nature. If I remember correctly.

...that's the point. That's called character. He doesn't disown Johnny purely because of the competition but a number of things, though seeing Johnny's talent instead of judging him a failure because Johnny isn't a clone of him leads to the change of heart. The scene makes it clear that Johnny's Dad realises in that moment what stupid mistakes he's made as a father and his resulting regret.

Back when I took creative writing, one of the main takeaways was that if there is a central aspect of a story that can be completely removed and not change the core of the story, then it shouldn’t be there. That’s how I feel about this movie. None of the characters have to be animals, it adds practically nothing.
From what I heard on a similar video's comment section, the only reason they're animals is because they're easier to animate

Imagine there is a car scene in a story, which involves two characters talking about something. It goes on and on, but has absolutely no relevance to character or story. If you take that out, and it affects or shows nothing relevant, then it shouldn’t be there.
Them being animals is simply a choice of design and creative choice, rather than actual story plot or writing. The movie was made for children, and talking, cartoonish animals appeal to them a lot more. I mean, asking why they have to be animals is like asking why Mickey has to be a mouse, when he doesn’t eat cheese, live in a hole, or squeak.

This movie is essentially the plot to The Music Man crossed with the setting of Zootopia
I always had mixed feelings about Illumination. They got everything they need to become another Pixar: creative ideas, talented artists, a distinctive animation style, likeable characters and much more. Yet it feels like they kinda minmax with their movies and always go for the safe strategy to get the most money with the least possible risk. And this can make their movies mediocre, and even obnoxious, but I can't help but ask myself: is it really that bad? In a world where most of the animation media belongs to Disney, this may be their only option to gain a foothold and remain independent. To take the least possible risks. I really hope Illumination remains, and once they're more estabilised in the industry, they eventually grow out of this stage to use their full creative potential.

IHE's video on Sing was spot-on. The cast of characters are each made to cover a wide archetype of people so that at least one of them appeals to your average viewer. It is the equivalent of hashtag relatable memes. They aren't characters, they are empty vessels for people to go "oh my God that is so *ME*".
Also, the fact that such a huge studio repeatedly reuses background characters in such an obvious way is absurd. I get that it's something most kids won't notice, but even for an average movie-goer details like this can subconsciously take you out of the immersion (not that this film is immersive at all).
Third off, why isn't this a short or something? It has no story and spends so much time doing absolutely nothing. Oh wait, because like I said before it has to appeal to everyone and they have to give each bland and unoriginal face a shit ton of worthless screen time!
There is almost no animal-based gags either, which comes across as lazy. Yes, shows like Bojack Horseman have anthro characters and only occasionally joke about the different types of animals, but honestly this can not be compared to Bojack Horseman. It's in an entirely different league and this movie has nothing to make up for lack of animal gags.

Oh, 100%. The first few episodes are rough, but it picks up in the second half of the first season, and just keeps getting better and better. As a fair warning, though, it gets REALLY depressing, so I’d recommend watching it in chunks instead of binging all of it!
