As an old guy (73) I am learning a great deal from your videos . I want to commend you for getting your daughter to help you. Doing things with your children is one of the most rewarding things in life for a parent.
I agree! My sons were older when I started growing food in an urban garden so I missed out on teaching them what’s important. Fortunately I had a series of young neighbors who appeared in my videos.
Just stumbled on this. Boneset is one of my go-to meds. That and mullein. My grandmother was an herbal healer. She passed it on to me. We are mostly Highland Scots and German. A bit of Native American thrown in. It has been passed from grandmother to granddaughter for centuries. I am currently working on a book and database of my own for my granddaughter.
I truly love the way you talk about the other people you learn from . Some people never give credit to where they get their info. You sure have a cute helper
My Granny would boil boneset and wild cherry then let this sit overnight on the tabletop with all of the ingredients steeping. Honey and whiskey were then added. As a side product; I got sassafras tea. She would start making this in Sept and a quart mason jar would last until April. Each of us would get a Tablespoon or two when needed.
@@Gardencook5 I actually found that I have both the Carolina cherry laurel and Black Cherry. It's the Laurel that I have learned has the poison fruits, and I did make this syrup with the late bone set. I'm new to this.

If you crush that sassafras into a powder, you can us e it in soup as a thickener. The Cajuns call it filé (feelay). Like in the song "film gumbo". Try it since you have some.
I was wondering if this would be about boneset! It’s definitely an overlooked but extremely useful herb! It’s 100% my favorite herb for fever with chills, and has a relaxing effect on muscle tension and even on the nausea from stomach flu… I call boneset tincture “sauna in a bottle”.
She is beautiful and adorable in those braids. Plus that is a thousand watt smile. She’s doing a great job learning how to do an excellent presentation by paying attention to what Dad does.❤❤❤
Good video , I find it interesting that I have been using a similar mixture for really bad colds, I used to get pneumonia easy . I used boneset , willow bark , mullien and ginger ( wow does it make you sweat ) and I would sweeten it with a little elderberry jelly . I would get over a cold in 2 days. The man I worked for , his wife was a teacher and brought colds home on a regular basis ... so I always kept this on-hand . I have used it for the last 25 years.
The strong tea, by itself, is a potent purgative. It doesnt take much. You'll feel much better afterwards. The plant itself is a beautiful tall perennial for background plantings for yard or semi-wild garden areas. The flowers linger for a long time and are loved by pollinators large and small.

Ten out of ten for the smile. 😄 I let bone set grow in my garden because it’s a late season food source for the bees and wasps. And I use in a vase like Queen Ann’s Lace…. but I never knew I could use it, too! Thanks for the lesson!
My mom is a nurse & was the director of nursing home she worked at when I was growing up. She kept a bottle of homemade cough syrup hidden in her desk. You find someone who has bees & get unpurified natural honey, any cheap whiskey, & now peppermints. We used to be able to buy menthol chips at any pharmacy. But they quit selling them. Pour out or drink 1/4th of the whisky. Drop 2 or 3 peppermints in the bottom. Add honey till full & recap. Put in a cool dark place & leave for 3 to 6 months. Anytime her elderly and/or disabled patients had been sick with a bad cold or illness & nothing the doctors had prescribed had worked she would wait till no one was around & sneak a plastic cup they used to hand out meds with to put about a shot glass sized dose of the concoction in then sneak it to the patient. They had to agree not to tell. They never did & she even gave it to the ones who couldn’t understand. She said by the next day they were already getting better. She said sometimes it took more than one dose but the docs were always amazed at how well their treatments worked. 😂
Definitely a 10 for the cutest fake smile. Thank You so much for this video and all of your videos. Matthew, I've got to say Georgia is the cutest! It makes me miss when my daughters were her age. Thanks for sharing, and thanks for teaching her about medicinal plants! That's really awesome!!!
Comfrey, mullein, slippery elm, sycamore syrup, mayapple root, skunk cabbage, devils club, are my most harvested plants for various healing remedies. Cow parsnip seeds are a favorite spice.
I cook and bake the same way! Used to drive my daughter (who is on the Autism spectum) insane! Everything has to be precise! I gave her one of my grandmother’s OLD cookbooks, that measured things by ‘handful’s of flour and ‘a lump of butter, the size of a walnut’, and the like. Blew her mind!😅
What always amazes me is that there had to be so much TRIAL AND ERROR by early natives and settlers. I mean, one might be poison. Another uses the bark, not the leaves. At some point, there was some real experimenting going on. Incredible how things were deduced.
I believe that many cultures have had spirit “educators”, which may be why ppl shied away from herbal remedies for decades, since it was aligned with spiritism and avoided by those listening to Bible warnings on the subject. However, God made the plants made this way, and my religious family overcame this bad reputation for herbs, etc. to cure naturally long before the current trend. Not only are natural cures important, but natural supplements are necessary for us now since our foods, air, and water are contaminated with various things, either deliberately added for taste, preservation or to lessen cost, or coming about as a result of man’s conduct of our environment.
It's not that amazing. You spend enough time in the woods, you start nibbling on stuff. The human body isn'y blind, deaf, and dumb: you taste and feel the plant in your mouth, in your body, and over time you develop a relationship with the plant. There are quite a few plants I learned about that way, only to have my experiences validated later when I learned the name of the plant and looked it up.
Thank you for this herb. It's rarely talked about. . A couple of years ago I made a tincture for a friend with cancer. I collected from 2 locations. Had them mixed together. After I made 2 quart jars something told me to see if there were any look alikes. Yes there is the plant I got from the second location. Not being able to determine if it was safe I had to pour both quarts out & start over. I'm in Pennsylvania .
I heard from my grandma that her grandma (my great grandmother) always had a bundle of this stuff hanging in her root cellar for treating fevers and malaria
