The problem is Lebanon is not planning to defend its self. It has no president because there is no majority to appoint one. Hezbollah has defacto taken over foreign policy. The decision to go to war is not being made by someone elected by the people. It's like if the a cartel in Mexico declared war on the United States that would result in the devastation of Mexico.

Israel is not what it used to be. It is losing touch with its ethical self, and is sliding into a paradigm of force as the ultimate reality, and so has its rivals. Israel and Hamas have escalated themselves into this, and now Israel and Hezbollah are escalating each other into this. Gaza needs to become a US Protectorate, displacing Hamas, which is about the only scenario that can obtain a cease-fire and Israeli withdrawal.
