    I was really surprised when I visited Avignon. People were so friendly, the city is so historic, it's big enough that you have amenities but not crowded like Paris or Marseilles. You can make it as a base as well and visit other towns outside. Nîmes isn't far and has some of the best Roman architecture that's still intact and still in use, Aigues-Mortes is also a Medieval walled city and the surrounding Camarague is a very interesting geographical area with sand dunes, salt flats and wild white horses, then also got to see the town of Gorde where there's a historic Abbey of Sénaque nearby that's famous for it's lavender, and finally I got to visit the Sentiers des Ochres near the town of Rousillon where they used to make Ochre ink from the rocks in the area which is a natural reddish brown colour.
    When you find yourself in Nice, Vieux-Nice, the oldest part of the city, is great to walk around and explore and has a famous ice cream shop called Pinocchio, you can climb up the the Colline du Château and have the best view of the city, go to the Matisse Museum and see the artist's home and houses some incredible Impressionist art, and you can take a cheap train ride over to Monaco and make it a day trip. There's also the town of St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat where you can stroll on the trail that goes around the peninsula and check out the cafés in town.
    Provence has got to be my fav region of France. Lots to see that caters for different types of people. You can go for history(Roman buildings, Medieval walled cities, sleepy villages, etc), you can go for luxe like Cannes and Saint-Tropez, you can enjoy a city life like Marseilles, Montpellier, Nice, etc, you can go hiking and enjoy nature, you can go wine tasting, buy lavender oil and try lavender liquour, and there's also a town that specialises in perfumes, Grasse, which supplies many luxury brands, and finally go to the same spots that many famous painters stayed and were inspired by the beautiful landscape(Van Goug, Picasso, Gauguin, Matisse). Def gonna head back the next time i'm in France.

Yes, they are all beautiful, historic, welcoming and alive with culture. I spent about a 10 days in several places, Avignon and Nice were my favorite cities. I was with a tour company, and it was nice, but next time I go, I’ll travel with my own itinerary. Did you travel alone or with a group? What are some tips if I plan my own itinerary?

      Okay, sorry seyber tooth I'm one of your dreaded Muricans, but I'm currently living/studying in France (I've lived in France 3 years) and I don't understand the whole brouhaha about Bordeaux. I mean it's like....all right....but....nothing super special. I prefer Tours if we're going for mid-sized cities that are sorta cool. The only advantage Bordeaux has is that its train station connects to a lot of good stuff haha. But the city itself, meh. It's like you hear people gushing about Bordeaux all the time...I've visited there about three times now (it's a cheap train ride from where I am) and I don't get it. It's not bad, it's just not really all that amazing either.

    • @bacchus3651
      @bacchus3651 5 років тому

      blackngold cuttlefish okay, maybe you think I’m saying that because I’m from bordeaux, but it’s a very beautiful city, with its new quays, its place de la bourse, place des quinconces, miroir d’eau, grand theatre (grand theater) rue ste catherine (saint-catherine st), jardin public (public garden), place pey-berland, saint-andré cathedral, pont de pierre (stone bridge), etc.
      in short, I it’s really pleasant to have a walk on a sunny afternoon in bordeaux, have a drink in a small place as camille julian place or parlement place, and to enjoy this beautiful city

    • @blackngoldcuttlefish3390
      @blackngoldcuttlefish3390 5 років тому

      @@bacchus3651 It's funny, I literally just got back from spending a night in Bordeaux with a friend. Yeah I mean...my goal isn't to bash it...it just seems to have a very high reputation so I guess I was expecting a bit...more? But you're right that it is very pleasant, including the park (until a random stranger began trying to get my number/hit on me the instant I sat on a bench by myself...but that sort of happens no matter where I am in France, considering I'm alone 99% of the time lol). Also in general it feels safe, which is nice. And there is a lot of preserved older architecture (not destroyed in WWII etc)

    It is a typically Parisian slant to refer to southeastern France only when speaking of the south. Similarly "la côte" usually means the Riviera - "côte d'azur" in French. Southwestern France gets left out. Yet places like the Ile de Ré and the Bassin d'Arcachon, not to mention the Basque country are easily as trendy as any on the RIviera. Also, Bordeaux and Toulouse are two stunningly beautiful cities

    This is a messy video. You can't list cities and then give the first place to a region. While there is so much to enjoy in the south of France, Avignon is historically the most important - Western Europe was ruled - more or less - from Avignon when the popes reside there for nearly 100 years. Also today, the Avignon Theater Summer Festival is the most important in continental Europe - and the model for the festival in Edinburgh ....

      Most of thoses places are connected by train, and have extensive public transportation. That being said, if you're after the "riviera" experience, pick a city and stay there. They all more or less offer the same things. Nice and Marseille, I'd say, feel like actual cities and not just tourist traps, which makes them slightly less expensive (relatively speaking). I don't like the riviera myself (lots of rich aholes that go there for the "luxury experience" and abuse staff). But I'd highly recommend Avignon and Carcassone from this list. Porquerolles is a good spot if you like going out at sea. A bit further in-land, in the South-west, smaller in scope, Cahors is a gem. Saint Cirq Lapopie, right next to Cahors, is also a place to visit if you love the peace and quiet with history, it's a small village beloved by the French (this place, however, doesn't have a tarin station. The best would be to rent a car in Cahors if need be).

    Being from Nice. I like this part a little more , but i would say Antibes is the best place to stay as a more cozy ; easy to get around with sandy beach destination… i feel its the more well rounded with cap antibes,old town;juan les pins and train/bus/airport access….. but after yea , nice , monaco , villefranche, eze, cassis, cannes, st paul de vence, esterelles, st tropez, calanques etc etc all the back country is very underrated but amazing valle des merveilles is stunning even in summer… i wouldnt go to marseille city - around is better , marseille except from port is sadly meh…

      Carcasonne is better imo, but I liked Aigues-Mortes. I remember swinging by Sainte-Maries-de-la-mer and explored the Camarague

    While there are some glaring misses, Montpellier, aigues-mortes, perpignan. I was surprised by the good pronunciation.
