Catching up on your Vids after returning to Almeremar this morning when "Cooling water alarm" came on in 3 metres of swell just outside the marina. Sorted now hopefully.
We think this was one of your best vids. Really like your explanation of using/understanding the wind conditions to assist the berthing and mid ship cleat use which is our preferred method sailing with just two.
Even so the Calpe berthing manoeuvre looked tight even for us. Your neighbour looked delighted 😃.
Surprised how cheap Calpe fees were?. We were quoted €60 a night. Mates rates? Keep safe.

It was before the 1st of June Stuart and we are less than 12 metres. Currently in San Antonio €48 a night!!! Sail safe Ant & Cid xx

Thank you Ant & CID for sharing the berthing tips. You explained it very well and it will come in very handy. Kind regards Daryl.

Beautiful. We miss Cartagena so much. We'll stop in on our return out of the Med this fall. We're back on the boat after a winter in the States and it was nice to watch your berthing maneuvers. I confess that I'm a bit nervous after not driving Talisman for 6 months. I know it's stupid, as these things always come back quickly, but Talisman is a very tricky boat to handle in wind. Her bow always wants to blow off the wind, and there's no controlling it once it start. Heavy bow thruster at the beginning is the only way. I suspect I would have gone down the fairway forward and backed upwind into the berth. This way I could always back back out, but it's something I'll think about.

All boats handle differently Kevin its partly about knowing your boat and what it will do in any given condition? For us we have a lot of boat in front of the keel so even with 7kW bow thruster we need to harness the wind or tide. The brunton prop makes this easy as it's pitch varies without prop walk it can be vectored over the rudder to turn us in our length with careful fwd and rev. We are now on our second boat that we have fitted one and they are brilliant. Hope to catch up soon as you start to head west. Best regards. Sail safe. Ant & Cid xx

Yes, our MaxProp feathering prop is probably similar. I use rudder "kick" a lot. A good surge of throttle with the rudder run full over will begin to spin the boat. Moving back into reverse keeps it from gaining way. I try my best to go easy on the transmission while doing this, giving a solid second or two between shifting into the opposite direction. Our problem really is that the boat doesn't steer well in reverse, which is typical for a skeg-hung rudder style boat. The semi-balanced high-aspect fin rudders typical of most newer boats perform better in this regard, but aren't quite as rugged. One tip I have for skippers is to understand that often (at least in our case) running the rudder too far over in reverse causes it to "plow" instead of bite. We have a major point of diminishing return once we get outside the middle 1/3 of rudder angle. Perhaps not so with your boat. Anyway, cheers as always. Your channel is one of my favorites to be sure.

Excellent Helming, can't wait to get more practice ourselves. We tried walking up D'Ifac (rock) but it got too hot so turned back. You could've took the dogs up there, it's a great view of the marina from the first section x

Good manoeuvring tips - you cannot fight the wind or the tide - so exploit them.👍

Thanks Norman. We are trying to help people think things through logically. We do not always get it right but we take our time, plan ahead and think about what the wind and tide will make the boat do. Thanks for watching and your comments. Sail Safe. Ant & Cid.

Nice one guys... loved the look of Cartagena. Was that a lazy line that you was using to hold you off of the quay wall or did you put a kedge out? (It either looked close in or designed for the job!)

Hey! Well spotted! Extra house points. Seriously, yes the along side mooring had the option of slime lines to our Port side to keep Impavidus away from the dock. We were advised that it was a good idea stand off by a metre or so at night as some times folks got a little over enthusiastic about having photos or selfies of them on yachts. But we have an Oscar!!! We did stand off but to be honest everyone we met or spoke to just had an interest. When the young lad was having photos taken we offered Impavidus as a backdrop. It built bridges and the family are now subscribers! A wonderful port so much history. Its a must see. Sail safe. Ant & Cid xx
