- Minor Rock Crawling in Anza Borrego. Just a test-ament as to what the 2017 Toyota Highlander AWD can accomplish.
NOTE: (For those true 4x4 people- Yes I know this is a car and not a true 4x4...and this in NOT true rock crawling- in your sense of the meaning.....) This video was created to allow viewers/ potential buyers to see the capabilities of the Highlander because there are really no off road videos for this vehicle.
I like the fact that you are actually doing what most other owners would never do with the offload activities! Have fun!
These things actually have a locking differential
Great video, thanks for doing this! I'm looking at a Highlander and I know they're not meant for hardcore off-roading, but its good to see what the limits are.
Don't blame you I would have had to try it myself, I knew the Highlander would do it, decent video.
For a vehicle designed for the tarmac, you were brave in bringing it out there.
Great video! She did great!
Awesome! I'm getting the same exact vehicle tomorrow, same model and color! Thanks
Jay K -
I think you will be very pleased with this car Not too quick off the line, but very good pick up when need to pass. I've been very happy witb this car. Towed my trailer up a dirt hill I didnt think it would make. Super impressed.
@@Nikoslist The Highlander is actually pretty peppy off the line in AWD with the V6. I drive mine in Sport Mode exclusively.
I took my highlander off roading around western North Carolina. I was surprised that it did ok on some of the trails but the approach and departure angles made for some interesting driving maneuvers. I drove on some faster trails (dirt roads) and the struts just couldn't take it. I now have a landcruiser in my fleet that does the off road work. Either way still impressed by the abilities the highlander has.
thanks for this video bc me and my mom were looking to see what it can do. Bc we live in the country so we need to know what it can do also my mom is getting this suv
Those rocks came too close to the oil pans. Luckily u guys made it out. Cool vid!
You did a really good job. Good practical video and the issue seems to be the front approach angle and clearance. Not sure if a high profile tires would be better. Also your GF / wife ? She did an awesome job as well... do one in slush / muddy water to test wading depth... except LRs have not seen other car makers specify it,,
impressive, both the car and the driver
This is the type of offroading we do with our 2 Mercedes which both have oversize tires. Would like to see a Highlander Hybrid test with the 265x65-18 Michelin XI2 or 265x70-18 Bridgestone Blizzak DM tires. Based on the clearance for tire chains, I think they will work but would sure like to know before spending $1,000 on a set of tires. We plan to buy a 2018 Highlander Hybrid XLE this fall.
Nice! I plan to lift my 2021 Highlander Hybrid and put 255/65R18 Falken Wildtrek AT Trails on. With a higher ground clearance, this trail should be no problem. As for those questioning why take a "grocery getter" off road, I say why not. Life is about taking the less traveled road.
I have since put larger trail tires on it, but I havent taken it off road with the tires. I wrote to some other guy on here, who has the same Highlander to see if he wanted to do a side by side comparison video of the difference with and without trail tires. We will see if he responds.
@@Nikoslist What larger sized and brand tires did you put on? Even though our vehicles are different years, curious to know how big you can go.
@@kchiker I put on the Toyo "Open Country" trail tire. P266 60 18. They fit perfect. No rub even when your suspension is maxed out. Im super happy with this tire. Like said, I haven't truely given them a good off road test, but Im hoping to soon. I will let you know how they fair and try to do a video.
@@Nikoslist - Good to know. There are a lot of AT tire choices in 265/60R18 size. I'm now leaning towards either Continental AT3 4S or Falken Wildpeak AT3.
I put the Falken Wildpeak 265/60/18 tires on my 2015 and they work great. Took them up to the mountain mud and snow. Still nothing too extreme just the typical light fire roads and one time I took a wrong turn and went up this trail with nice size boulders and dips. Turned back around a short after, but turns out it was a jeep trail lol glad I turned back around in time :D the bigger tires really helps with the ground clearance. I think my parking lot cruiser is about .5 to an inch taller.
This is pretty damn IMPRESSIVE for a vehicle that isn't meant too do this. I think a Subaru Outback would also struggle with this. So that's saying quite a bit.
My neighbor just got a new 2020 Outback. We struggle over the exact same obstacles. I have been very impressed with the Highlander's capabilities.
Ive taken my Highlander on a lot harder trails! Your Highlander will continue to impress!!
good show , thanx
thank you
The Highlanders can offroad. I own a lifted 1st gen in fwd with 265/70/16 mud tires. I don't have 4wd. I can climb up those rugged gravel roads uphill on traction control and 2nd gear.
Kudos to your driver
Nice! Slow but all that matters is that you made it ;)
That looks like a range rover velar at 1:16 great looking suv.
Front camera addition is a good idea for this activity.
It's probably the limit of what this Highlander could do, and it's very impressive for this family SUV!
Impressive for a Highlander.
I wanna see a video of the car going up that same trail
Does the hitch ever hit your shin when you are loading/unloading? I am debating between factory hitch and aftermarket hidden hitch. Thanks!
The hitch mount is flush with the bumper. You cant really hit your shin. However when you have the hitch installed... yes. But thst would be true with most any hitch.
Where to did you pick up front tow eyelets for 2017 Highlander SE ? And part # if you have it. Thank you.
I got them on-line. Genuine Toyota 51961-30020 Tow Hook, Front
www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GKHKI2W/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
They are not for the 2017 but they fit just fine.
Good test! Was hoping I could see a diagonal incline AWD test on the car, currently on my list for this year, mazda cx-9 already off the list, couldn't cut it
Technically when off-road you want to try to avoid diagonal hill climbs at all cost. You want to go straight up or down. Diagonal is recipe for a roll-over
Yes, I am not planning on any vertical climbs. I have played around on some small berms when out in the desert... But nothing worth filming.
Michelin defenders? Awesome video!
I'm thinking about getting a 2017 (mid-model refresh) and the Limited model just for the LED headlights and the brown colored interior! Do you know of any aftermarket makers of suspension lift systems for a highlander?
Sorry I dont. I haven't done any suspension research because Im not interested in lifting it. I think if I were, I would probably bag it. Just so I can keep a lower profile for my every day driving.
E. Simons any luck on finding a lift kit. I love my highlander but just wish there was a 3inch kit.
E. Simons none of them have LED headlights, only daytime running lights. Sadly they're all halogens ☹
I love highlanders
Very brave of you guys to do that lol
Impressive…getting into one of these and I think with a 2 inch lift and more ground clearance than a 4runner offroad I believe it will shock some people
Not 4WD for sure, but it surprised me as to what it could do. I have been very impressed with this car.
Certainly NOT what the vehicle was designed for. It is not a Jeep or even Explorer, but it is super comfortable, smooth, & quiet on pavement with Lexus-like luxury. Absolutely love this SUV. Worth every one of its nearly 4,000,000 pennies.
Yes, it drives like its on a track.... Super smooth.
Real question: If I got this vehicle and lifted it with better all terrain tires, how much more capable would this be... and would one really need a four runner if the highlander had mods?
Depends on what you want to do with the vehicle. If you need for more clearance to get over obstacles, (few rocks, mud and snow), then lifting it would make it more capable. However if hill climbing and bouldering: the drive train is the drive train, and lifting it would probably not get you up anything it cant already accomplish. Tires will help is a lot of situations, but not all. A 4 runner will be MUCH more capable than the highlander, with more off-road options. The 4 runner (I am assuming you would be getting the 4x4 version) has a locking differential, which is true 4 wheel drive. The Highlander is AWD (All Wheel Drive) in which all wheels have the capability of self-turning but typically dont all spin at the same time. You would have to fabricate the highlander suspension to give it more articulation. It's like a box.... If one corner goes up the opposite side goes down. So there are many times you only can get 3 wheels on the ground and the 3rd wheel is just a balance point and doesn't have much traction. If you can get/ build a suspension platform to get more articulation, then I dont know what this thing could do- but probably a lot. It would be interesting as hell to find out. If I could fab things I would probably try just to be different and have the baddest Highlander on the road. But dont forget that the frame and components are not designed to bend and flex... so expect to break things along the way.
From what I have discovered is that the AWD on the Highlander, and the AWD on the Subaru are pretty much identical. Things the highlander struggles with, the Subaru struggles with as well. Throw in the 4Runner and it would have no problem doing any of the things that these AWD cars struggle to accomplish.
Bottom line: AWD is not a substitute for a true 4x4. For the money you would spend, you are better off getting a 4x4 in the beginning and not trying to make a car what it is no. .
Stay Tuned to this channel. I just got new, bigger, more aggressive tires and have planned to make another video about what it can and cant do again. This next video should be a bit better because there should be a 2020 Subaru Outback, 2019 Subaru Crosstrec, my 2017 Highlander and a Jeep Rubicon to get us out of all the things the AWDs cannot get out of. This is planned for sometime next month (July 20th or so).
Oh... If you want to know more about 4 wheel capabilities compare all of the different Jeep models. The Rubicon has EVERYTHING you need to truly 4 wheel drive right out of the box, No modifications needed. All the mods you do after that are really for looks and clearance.
Niko Havel Thanks a million! Great explanation. I’m just in a dilemma as I absolutely love the 4 runner, but not the mpg and anticipate them refreshing it (rumor) and putting in a twin turbo hybrid V6 of some sort in around 2022. Just wish they could meld 4 runner capability with Highlander (or near highlander) mpg. Will take all these suggestions into account and will probably go 4x4 as a solid base to start. Much thanks!
My 2013 highlander came with a tow hook. It's next to the spare tire tools. If mine didn't have one, it would cost about $30.
I think the older Highlanders came with them but not the new. Mine had an indentation spot for it in the back for storage, but didn't come with it. I went to the dealer and checked out about 5 other cars and they were missing too. The dealers also don't have an order number so I had to order the 2013 hooks.
I think most tow drivers call them "pull tabs" because they're known to break off under serious load. They're just meant for tie downs during transport from the factory, not go pull the whole car out of a rut.
Will this go through a cemetery with fresh muddy graves ... like if I want to take a shortcut
I live in Southern California; it doesn't rain, so I dont know much about it's mud capabilities.
@@Nikoslist very recently we got stuck out bush, it had rained the day before and we didn't expect this road to be muddy so we went down and realised that we started to slide down the hill, we tried to get back up but no luck, took us about 7 goes before we called someone but we made it out some how after 4 more tries, this was the base FWD model and had normal road tires, I still laugh to this day about how the hell we got out, don't try this by your self tho.. do buy a AWD version
Took a grocery getter off-roading, right on. Lol
Why do people call SUV's/crossovers "grocery getters". You can get weeks worth of groceries in a Mustang. People also think vehicles like this are only for people with numerous kids. I see lots of seniors driving Highlanders too. If I was a single guy, I'd still want one.
- JPL - Are you asking me "why do people call these small suv's grocery getters?" Cause I don't have a precise answer for you other than the obvious which is, go to any grocery store and see the percentage of the cars parked there are this type. Now go to any of our many different well known off-roading trails and sites that we have all across the U.S. and see how many percentage of them are off-roading this type. Lol It's probably something close to 80% for the 1st scenario and literally 1% for the 2nd. And that 1% is THIS guy! Hahahaaa
[]D [] []V[] []D [] []\[] U 0UT ,
No what I'm saying is why do people call a vehicle that does most things, a grocery getter? As if that's all it's for. These are vehicles for family life no matter the situation. Great for family road trips. If all you need to do is get groceries, buy a Corolla. I also didn't suggest the Highlander is an off-roader so why would you see a bunch of crossovers at a trail? And since when is the 3-row Highlander a "small SUV"?
- JPL - Oh I see what you're saying about the grocery getter. I guess even though these vehicles are an all around multi use vehicle, most are not necessarily utilized to the extent of their capabilities, like this couple is doing here in this video. I guess a similar scenario would be like the people that buy trucks but have never once used them as a truck, there are a lot of people like that. In this case as you know the highlander is 'capable' of some light or minor off road, but I would say that's the extent of it. Good that it's capable though, that's reassuring if ever stuck in a bit of a jam. And lastly it is a small suv/crossover as you mentioned before, it is NOT a full or regular size suv. The regular/full size suv of Toyota is the Land Cruiser, its Lexus cousin is the LX570, Nissan's is the Armada, its Infinity cousin the QX80, Chevy Tahoe/Suburban is GMC's Yukon & XL, which is also Caddy's Escalade, Ford Expedition is Lincoln's Navigator and on and on...you get the picture.
Technically, it is "mid-sized". :-) I'm looking at the hybrid one of these for the 80% usage of hitting the highways and bypasses without sucking down the fuel. But, good to know I should never be too concerned about the dirt roads I also hit. :-)
Just need a lift and done and tires. Pretty nice
will it pass the moose test?
I will let you try that test in your new car..... Im not intentionally trying it in mine.
I would gladly give up half of the electronic shit on the car for a real 4x4 in it..
gonzosc1 that’s called a 4Runner...
Get the traxda 2” lift and it will great !
Looks like Caltrans did a lot of work on the trail! Haha.
If it weren’t for that barn door of a front grill
Not bad for downstairs
not bad at all
The Highlander it’s a wrong name for that car Toyota should it make Highlander a better high off road full suv
No skid plates. I can't bear to watch.
There ok as long as you keep all four wheels on the ground. Toyota's Traction Control is one of the worst I've ever seen.
You're talking crap. Look at the Kia Sorento, Land rover discovery, Range rover, Evoque, Any Audi, and the Subaru Outback, they all have a TC system that works, unlike the Highlander!
Works just as fine as the other once. It works very well off road. It will unstuck you if you smart enough.
If you do that often I recommend you check your axels later that’s one of the problems also your suspension it’s not designed for those roads unfortunately, I’m paying off mine because I only owe 2000 but I’m going to get a full suv and not a crossover vehicle

My next mid SUV is highlander
Diều Hâu .. it’s not an suv. It’s a crossover.
Mines is to
i have taken my 2013 full time highlander on waaay harder roads than this. i think older models are better offroad beause its always 50/50 locked.also the 3.5 v6 motor is the choice. way powrful than the 2.7 i4
Ford explorer vs
That would be a good one. But I think that the Ford Explorer is actually a true 4x4, as opposed to a AWD.
Smart move having the wife drive. even if she does what you say, and she breaks something or gets stuck, it is her fault.
You literally went DOWN the hill.
Next time try uphill
Can it do it, yes, should you, no.
Why not?
It's toyota not surprising it can do better
Not bad for a Camry.
Toyota Landcruiser would be better for this
Yes but if you don’t off road too often it’s not worth driving a 12mpg as a daily.
@@jayemveeaydee true
4runner!!!
not really sure why people would take a vehicle made for paved roads....off roads...just "to see". You don't buy steel toe boots and then go jog a few miles in them "just to see". May as well take a Lincoln Town Car off road while you're at it.
Maybe down south lincoln town cars where they have 50 inch wheels lol jk ...yeah you got a point though.
You can turn any vehicle into an off road one. Mine has a lift & all terrains and it’s 💯 made to go off road. I haven’t had an issue once.
B.S. all down hill , you say uphill Ok prove it show the vid.
R Sanchez How do you think they got up there? Air drop by helicopter?
LOL.... Filming was an after thought. If you knew the trail you'd know there is only one way in and one way out. So what comes down, had to go up... I wouldn't lie- it's an informational video.
Would still be much interesting seeing that Highlander going up. I know how bad is the traction control in Toyota SUV, so kind of impressing to think it could go up.
Dude you need to do cardio exercise more often. Out of breath, out of shape.
Otherwise, thanks for vid.
Stupid bringing this off road. Takes 2 people, and all day to go 30 yards. Why not just use a Honda Accord.
Because I dont have a Honda Accord.
If you think a Honda accord could do that, then your absolutely brain dead.
Michelin defenders? Awesome video!
