Growing up with no parents, and being raised by someone else, I could really relate to most anime characters like the Straw Hats because it's either their parents are dead, deadbeats, or never seen in the anime at all. Their tragic backstories and how they overcame them always inspire me because of how much I relate to them. It's nice to see someone talk about how lack of parents affects these characters. Awesome content as always Ohara. 🔥

I'm starting to think that the One Piece is actually Luffy, because he is the ONE piece that connects literally everyone to everyone, and without that one piece, everyone would still be fighting, hating, and suffering. But with Luffy everyone's story is connected.
How is that when Roger and Rayleigh, even Whitebeard talked about the One Piece? They never even met Luffy. Luffy wasn’t even born by that point.

I think Bonney is actually Conney, the queen of the Sorbet Kingdom. I get the feeling that most people think that Conney is a disguise she used to attend the Reverie, but it makes more sense for that to be her real self and for Bonney to be the disguise.

There is one big theory you missed about Luffy's family. There is a theory that Dragon is actually the son of Rocks D. Zebec who was saved after the incident on god valley and dragon took Garp's last name to erase his ties with his father, and Luffy's mom is the actual offspring of Garp and not Dragon. And to try to protect his only daughter, Garp hid her from the world and claim Dragon as his son publicly. Also, Garp being such a veteran in the marine, knows about a lot of the secrets of the world, which is why he also doesn't take a stance against Dragon.

5:49 Pause, Luffy DOES have a mom though, in fact he has 2 of them. Dadan and Makino. A parent doesn't necessarily HAVE to be biological to be a parent. And this is proven by the relationship between Dragon and Luffy vs Shanks and Luffy.
Dadan may have grudgingly taken the ASL trio in at first but in the end she was there to see Luffy off even at the risk of being caught, she went ham on Garp after Ace died all the whille crying her eyes out (and being a generally grieving mother). Makino too helped Dadan with child rearing, even going so far as to teach Ace (and attempt to teach Luffy) how to be polite
Therefore Luffy can be counted among the ones who have an actual mother

I get a vibe that Luffy is a boy of Kuja. It would explain his natural gifts, his lack of greed, and why Kuma sent him there. Kuja tribe only give birth to women on the island but what if one didn’t give birth there? The unusual attraction Boa has for him might also be explained because of this. Dragon looking East could also imply him in Kuja’s direction and why Kuma knows.

Nah dude. Bellamere was a literall adopted mother, both in manerism and in name. She called and considered herself their mother, and acted like one. Dadan was more of a nanny and Doctorine more like a mentor. If we go by the "loving mother" then only Bellamere fits the bill

just because Oda "has already drawn" Luffy's mom, doesn't mean she already was shown in the story. Oda could have simply drawn some concept art and character designs but did not write her in the story

This. When he confirmed she was still alive, he also confirmed he never implemented her because he's unsure on how he wants to fit her in the story. Tbf though this is from 2009 though so he may have found a spot for her since then. Quote below:

The statement of Oda about mothers being the opposite of adventure is somewhat true. I have a mama and I love adventures, especially the ventures where I can challenge my fears. But, my mother was always scolding me for I'm always coming out of our forest wounded. So yeah, it's true.

dont wanna go full "neil degrease tyson", but the archetypical image of the Mother figure is very associated the womb; a place of confort, nurture and prosperity, but inevitably finite, such as you can't stay on the womb forever (slight tangent on how Rouge was badass for carrying a babbey for as long as 24 months, goddamm).
Fun fact, the Mother figure is very associated with the Moon, and the Father figure is associated with the Sun; such it's the job of the Father to teach the child how to protect and survive for themselves, in turn emancipating the child from the pampering (or the symbolical "womb) of the Mother.
It makes me sad that Usopp didn't seem to have a solid "father figure" after the passing of his mother. He constructed an "idea" of what his father was, and rolled with it, almost like a delusion. Ussop's friendship with Kaya and them adorable little fucks that go around following him in the town is a blessing, I don't even want to think what would've happen if Luffy wasn't there to help.
I think the idea of mothers being the opposite of adventure makes more sense if you think of how mothers usually relate to the idea of coming/being home.
I heared of a theory that dragon isn‘t Garp‘s son, since it is never said that they are related. The theory goes on to say that Garp‘s daughter and Dragon had a „forbidden love“ since Dragon is the son of Rocks D. Xebec himself. The Daughter of the Hero habing a child with the son of a man so despicable he had to be removed from history.

@Automne yea not many ppl knew the relations between the monkey family cuz pre water 7 luffy was only known to the marines in east blue by his moniker straw hat luffy,and in water 7 territory when luffy and his crew met with garp thats when alot more of the marines knew and then in marineford the whole now knows his connection to dragon, so most of the marines being in the dark is why they were shocked twice with luffy, its possible that oda is trying to hide dragon not being garps son by blood but i doubt it

I think bonney's previous devil fruit eater is Ace's mom, the reason why she's able to conceive the latter for several months is because of the devil fruit.
Sure Franky was abandoned by his pirate parents on Water 7, but I'd argue that Tom and Kokoro took on the role of parents to him after that, so technically you could say that Franky's adoptive mom, Kokoro, is still alive and kicking. Franky wasn't just a part of Tom's Workers; it really appeared like he and Iceberg were a part of Tom's and Kokoro's family.
you could say the same about Chopper, he was adopted by Hiriluk his father who sacrificed himself for Chopper and his people in a similar way that Tom sacrificed himself and then Kureha his mother who is still alive

The idea that luffy mom is a pirate herself also fits, if I remember properly, with the very first time we saw dragon in which he came to know he was a pirate and he said something like “it fits you”. Maybe he was implying there that becoming a pirate was fitting luffy because her mom was a pirate too
I like the Bonny angle, it would be fun and wouldn"t push Luffy into "Skywalker" territory. Going off of the first theory, Oda said he has already drawn Luffy's mom, and your theory of the "forbidden love" could lead to Imu. Oda likes to play with first introductions and things are never as they seem. The five elders may be controlling Imu like in other arcs. Or, it is possible that Imu is the big bad that Luffy has to overcome. A key element of One Piece is about living in the shadow of family. What would the biggest shadow in Luffy's life be? Anyway, just thoughts.

A celestial dragon that was killed? Oda said his mother is alive. Belo Betty is 34 years old, which makes her only 13 years older than Luffy. Why no one thought of Roger's sister? Because she does not exist. Dragon was looking back in the direction of East Blue, Jewelry Bonnet is from Sorbet Kingdom all the way down in South Blue, so no.

I don't know, the existence of Nami's mother may still be out there. Bellemere was an adoptive mother that took in both Nami and Nojiko at a war torn village. We don't know the situation of that village, so there is still plausible deniability that Nami's parents may still be alive.

I feel introducing bio parents for nami , that are still alive, would take away from the relevance of her bond with bellemere, she doesn't need any other mom.
@@nessyness5447 The introduction of Sanji's biological family only enhanced his character's depth despite having a bond with Zeff as his parental figure. Bellemere's bond and relevance wouldn't be dismissed, if anything it would be enhanced. A separation of biological ties and the ties of the family that raised and truly cared for Nami which always turns out to be a very compelling story-hook.

The thing about Luffy being the chosen one is that it seems to be a bit more nuanced. It may be that everyone with the D in their names is a chosen one and only the one who really steps up or is reintroduced to Joyboy's will is going to be the true bringer of dawn. If not, then the theory that Ace was the true chosen one and that Luffy had to take up the mantle after Ace's death is also pretty interesting.
Yea im guessing there are a chosen few every generation, all have stepped up to the plate and have come up short or gave up, roger was the first to our knowledge and closest to acheiving joyboys will but unfortunately it was in the wrong time period and sucks he didnt have more time for the appointed time period where joys promise can be fulfilled, for luffy he is only the chosen one due to him making all the right moves in the right time period and all his actions and who he is are inspired cuz of roger and shanks to some extent, even irl ive seen the impossible become possible all becuz the right ppl were making the right decisions and born in the right time period to make it happen, and previous generations came up short too cuz the world wasnt ready either for a truth or technology
My headcanon atm is that any D could become Joyboy since inherited will is an extremely strong established topic in the world of One Piece. What separates Luffy from everyone else is just the time he was born in, the circumstances of his upbringing, and his motivations. Many other D's may have checked 2/3 of the boxes but were either too early (like Roger), refused to inherit Joyboy's will due to the circumstances of their life (like Ace with his rejection of Roger), or don't truly understand what it means to be "Joyboy" and that it is about freedom and not control (like Blackbeard).
Actually ace was never the chosen one if you remember correctly when roger visited the fishman island he heard about the prophecy by the sea kings using his voice of all things ability about the exact time when the chosen one will be born and we can see that it relates exactly with luffy timeline and i think after his adventure to laughtale he must realise that he is not the one joyboy had plans for so as he was dying he made the decison of sacrificing himself so that more people will go out to the sea in search of one piece and hopefully the chosen one shall as well.

As far as I see it we’re reading a Shonen. He’s the main character. The main character is the chosen one like 99% of the time.
I agree in that it doesn’t take anything away from Luffy and his accomplishments and in the end he might be part of a chosen group, not so much be the one outside of being pivotal to the group itself. Like, other characters could’ve been plugged into his role given the opportunity or need; Ace obviously being a great example as was mentioned here.
Either way I’m along for the ride and it doesn’t bother me one way or another. No Shonen has ever been remotely as long and continued to get better. Looking at you Bleach and Naruto.
A hero being an orphan is a jungian archetype.
This trope is one of essential parts of The Hero Jorney, and you will find an orphan main character in the beginning of almost every epic story.
What's interesting though, is that archetypical missing parents tend to appear later in the story, and they are usually magicians or kings or some other sort of unusuall, powerful, exeptional beings. Not always good, often ambiguous, sometimes evil as Sanji's dad...
So I feel like "mothers being the opposite of adventures" is half-joking teasing oversimplification. And in reality, One piece does go deep in psychology of trauma and personal growth and patterns of human behaviours.

Tbh the parents I’m most interested in are Franky’s, since they were both pirates. I don’t expect a crazy reveal but just what kinda pirates they were. If they were stronger than the strongest pirate in East blue, or just happy fo lucky pirates like Brooks crew.
However Brook’s history, his country and knowledge is super intriguing, as out of the SH he has the most accomplishments.

Any chance to hear about the theory that Luffy's mom is actually Garp's daughter, since Garp never claimed Dragon to be his son? Dragon might be the son of Rocks D. Xebec who he resembles much more than Garp. Which would mean that Luffy's grandparents are the hero of the marines and the worst pirate known to date.

About the reason why I think them being ''chosen ones'' takes away from the effort they put in.
In a lot of anime/manga series, when they reach the endgame, a lot of people put an incredible amount of effort to be as strong as they are.
If the only thing that differentiates the power level between two people is luck, I think that takes away a lot from the characters.
An example to explain my point better: Naruto. At the end of the series, the two people standing on top are Naruto and Sasuke. We've seen in the series a lot of people that put RIDICULOUS amounts of effort in, Rock Lee trained like a maniac for years, for example, but the people fighting the final battle are Naruto and Sasuke, because they inherited the powers from the sage, and each had an advantage (Sharingan and Fox) to begin with.
Same direction my Hero Academia is taking. Right now, Izuku puts his hands in every one of his classmates faces, easily, because he awakened 420 quirks.
He's trained ridiculously hard, but Kirishima is, on purpose, acting as the punching bag of everyone in the series while being obsessed with being stronger, and the power difference is obvious.
In a villain, this doesn't bother me, because I think that surmounting impossible odds through sheer force of will and effort is very cool in a shonen, like Luffy using a relatively weak devil fruit and training super hard to beat Zoans, Logias and so on, I can consider Conqueror to be a reflection of his determination, Joyboy to be something inherited instead of just him being the chosen one since birth, but if they go with the ''It was written since birth, Shanks only chose him because he knew, the Gomu Gomu no Mi has hidden super powerful powers'' route, I think it takes away from the effort he put in (Still, after a journey this long, less annoying than a lot of other series out there, isekais being the worst offenders)
I personally think theres more to the gomu gomu no mi that we can see but it isnt necessarily what we've seen speculated up until now, his awakening could be like doflamingos or one that exclusively affects his body, because until now the only characters with confirmed awakenings are producers or zoans, vulcanization would make him much tougher but limit his stretchiness, or he could just make the world around him like a bounce castle, that sounds like luffy and something oda would do, something that seems dumb but with proper use can be extremely destructive, luffy is wither rogers or joyboy's reincarnation, and it could also make sense that he's the reincarnation of both, but that doesn't give him an advantage, that merely gives him certain mentality, now, on the whole thing that one piece is oda doesn't like reusing devil fruits, hes only done it 2-3 times and one of them is an inheritance of will, ace's will which sabo inherits through the devil fruit, however its very possible that this inheritance only happened because the devil fruit was found quickly, ace had it for seemingly years and no one else ate the fruit after he died, im ranting before watching the video lol

It's always a combination of the two. Nobody ever became the best at anything through hard work alone. They also were lucky to have the right parents, the right genetics, the right influences, the right mindset instilled, the available resources for training, etc etc etc. Michael Phelps has a great work ethic but he's also a freak, or chosen one. Oda is one of the hardest working people alive, but he's also lucky to have received all the right inputs to become the storyteller that he is.
Even if a shonen story doesn't make the protagonist a chosen one in the lore of the series, you can't disregard the astronomically unlikely series of events and circumstances a character would have to experience in their lives to become that specific character. It's always both, destiny and self determination. Circumstance and effort.

Bleach retcons everything every arc to add new powers to the protagonists.

So during the Reverie (per the world government's orders) someone tried to kill Vivi and Cobra, succeeded in killing Cobra but couldn't kill Vivi because Sabo stepped in to save her (just the popular theory of what happened at the Reverie). Then both of them were cornered with no way to escape, but then were suddenly helped to escape by a celestial dragon, who turns out to be Luffy's mother and she helped due to the connections Vivi and Sabo have with Luffy.

I wonder if the attempt to wipe out a generation to stop Rogers bloodline included those with the D? The world gov did go as far to change names of those with the D like Gol D Roger to Gold Roger on wanted posters. Maybe they had a list of ancestors and surviving families with the D. So when Ace was born later on and became a pirate, they became aware of him. If a woman with a D was reported not pregnant then later on disappeared within months after the year long generation wipe. Then could assume she is the one since can confirm no one else is the mother because they killed all the new borns and confirmired all the other parents dont have kids from that time period that could be Ace. They knew Rogers spent some time on that island with a woman so they checked every one on the island for a whole year. So thats maybe how the marines knew Ace's mom name, they had the records of everyone on the island.

I'm not sure the question of "who is Luffy's mom" is relevant. Think about His reaction to learning about his dad. I just can't see some heart-warming story where Luff is reunited with his mom that he doesn't know exists. Besides, I feel like a big part of one piece is the importance of family beyond kin. However, I do think that it is fun to speculate 😁
Definitely agree, but they matter to every other character, such as when Dragon saved Luffy in Loguetown. Luffys mom could help him later on in the manga even if he doesn’t even know or care he has a mother. Family is definitely important in One Piece, but it also isn’t everything

I think Belo Betty and Bonney are the least possible of these. Betty's age and birthday are listed. She's 34, which means she would have been pregnant with Luffy and gave birth to him at 15.
As for Bonney, at the time this vid was made we didn't know as much about her background. Her age being Kuma's daughter, also makes her too young to be Luffy's mom.

When I think of the "forbidden love" route I tend to think of Dragon as either a high ranking marine or, like, CP0 who fell in love(?) with a celestial dragon. And, either her death or (if she's still alive) the horrors that he was exposed to drove him to form the revolutionaries
Let me tell you this, I'll cry a lot and I mean a lot when the series end. At this point, I am so emotionally attached to One Piece, I feel what characters are going through. Truly a masterpiece.

Well...... Bonney is 12 so she is even younger than Luffy. She got those habits from Ginny, her mother.
It's a actually really common for mothers to not be present or not be important in a lot of media... like look at disney, while there are exeppsions (especially more recently) mothers in diseny movies are at best minor characters with no real purpose in the story and at worst died or missing (or both I guess)...
In general most stories with young adult characters and below prefer to write out the parents somehow because it’s inconvenient for the story. Wouldn’t make much sense for these Shonen protagonists to be fighting murderers if their parents were in their lives. Similar in Disney, if Mufasa hadn’t been written out for example then Scar and the Hyenas wouldn’t be threats.

And while I could be wrong about it, I feel like it's far more common for the father to be important in some way while the mother isn't...

The better writer’s make it meaningful. They main point is that nearly every plot would be ruined if the parents were still around.
To Chopper and Franky must be said that both of them then have been raised by figures that were like parents to them. Interestingly both of them lost their father figure by tragic events, related to their own doing. (the Toadstool soup and the BF ships.)

I would prefer for Luffy's mom to be revealed in SBS than in manga, because Luffy's only mother is Dadan and no other woman can take that position.
This is the same excuse used in Hunter x Hunter, and I always hated it. My stepdad and bio dad will both always be my dads. I don't care less about the other just because the other exists. Plus, in anime, I feel like it is much less likely to be the mom's fault if she isn't there. Gon's mom might not have had a choice when Ging gave him to his cousin, and she could still love and care for Gon, but Gon cares more about finding the one that actively gave him up. If Ging gave Gon to a male cousin, he would have been searching for his mom instead, and that's all it would take. Likewise, if Luffy's bio mom was a criminal that would be putting him in danger by staying, she could have a good reason not to be there. I feel like it is always necessary to think about why she isn't there before saying she can't take the place of his mother. Plus, even if Luffy meets his mom, he wouldn't think less of Dadan. He knows who his dad is now and still doesn't really care. Luffy is also all about family. I'm sure if she loved him, he'd be happy having two moms rather than thinking of her as a replacement for Dadan.

He probably won't view him as a dad, but I feel like Luffy would still like him. Luffy will make friends with pretty much anyone. Heck, he even kinda likes Buggy even though he tried to kill him multiple times. He might not love Dragon immediately, but I'm sure he'd at least invite him to have a party and catch up. Especially since they are friends with a lot of the same people, they'd have something to talk about.

This might explain why Bonnie was crying uncontrollably right after the broadcast was cut off at Marineford. Maybe she realized Luffy was her son, and was happy he was alive, but in agony because she was so close in Archipelago and had no idea.
Next scene shows Law angry because he doesnt believe the lie that White beard would betray his crew. Maybe Oda was misdirecting us, making us think that Bonnie was upset about the White Beard thing when she was actually emotional because of Luffy??

Bonnie is getting a lot of credit just because of unknown age. There is a theory she is BM's mom since they look kinda similar and now Luffy? The problem is that she should know who Luffy is since he's Monkey D. Luffy and he doesn't hide it. It's literally on every newspaper. She at least has to know he is her son on Arcipelago and she barely reacts to him. But at least she shares Luffy's appetite. Would be funny if it's revealed he and BM are siblings.

I think the celestial dragon one makes the most sense, but I would think it wouldn't be so cliché. Maybe it was that Dragon hid his D name, then finally said something after Luffy was born, sending the mother into a rage where she threatened, and maybe tried, to kill infant Luffy. Thus pushing Dragon to abscond with him and try to protect him by handing him over to Garp. (Yes, I know there holes in this theory, I came up with it while poopin)
I'm sure there's better theories, but I like the idea of Luffy having ties to all the major powers; Garp being a hero of the marines, Dragon being the leader of the revolutionaries, His mother being a Celestial Dragon, and Luffy aiming for the title of Pirate King.
Actually Nami was found as a Baby her parents may have been killed in that war before Belle-Mere found her and Nojiko. And Nojiko told her she found the baby. So we may never know where Nami was really born or who here birth parents were or why she has such a high aptitude for weather manipulation

I also think that...the fact that most of the Straw Hat's don't have a family waiting for them at home(That they need to go back to.) really aids the story as well. At the end of the day the only reason the member's of the Straw Hat crew are there is 1. To follow their own dreams and 2. Because there's nothing holding them back or making them want to come home.
Under the right circumstances the reader/watcher would be like "Damn...i guess they go home now." BUT the straw hat crew IS their home now, they don't need to go all the back to east blue because home is right there so they can keep their journey and adventure going as long as they need to.
That mean luffy is a mother of the whole strawhat's crew, A meat eating and not shareing food mother

To be honest I know Bellemere is Nami adopt mom but we really don’t know if Nami parents are actually dead. So that’s a bit of a mystery as well so I’m gonna say that Nami biological parents are somewhere out there.

I don't think so, first of all she was one of the few possible only 2(Nami and Nojiko) people left alive in that war before she got adopted by Bellmere plus Nojiko was holding Nami because she was crying if he parentzwhere alive they wont let some random kid take their baby. So i don't see how we can find out Namis biological parents after 19-20 years when they are dead and even if they aren't how can they know she is their daughter when she was only a baby.

Whoa! You make a great point! Bellemere found Nami and Nojiko after the Navy fought a gruesome battle (apparently with civilian casualties). We also know Bellemere recognizes Arlong from having worked in the Grand Line. Why did the Navy fight that gruesome battle? Was Nami taken from an island on the Grand Line? Was that island decimated? What happened to the other civilians on that island, are some still alive? There’s so much we don’t know!!
It's crazy to think that we have already seen Luffy's mother, but had no idea who she is. We know he doesn't resemble Dragon at all, I bet if you dig a little bit and find character's with similar features than you could figure it out. At the end of the day we all resemble our parents in some way, whether it's eye color or something as trivial as the way our noses are shaped.
