The worst thing about us never getting a true Viewtiful Joe 3 is the fact that the first two games literally tell the player, that they are part of a three part series. In the ending of the first game Captain Blue tells Joe that he would have to defend Earth two more times, and at the end of the second game Joe is about to head into a spooky looking mansion for his final adventure. And then... that adventure never came. Thanks for the video though, Viewtiful Joe doesn't get nearly as much love as it deserves.
Viewtiful Joe 3 wasn't just a "possible discussion." The ending to both of the main games has the characters mention "the Earth will be targeted by 3 great threats" and VJ2 ended with one of the characters promising the origins of the Black Film and Black V Watch would be revealed. It was always meant to be a trilogy. And there are Easter Eggs in Wonderful 101 that reveal it to be connected to Viewtiful Joe like Silvia being an unlockable character (Wonder Cheerleader) and Wonder Pink having a quick time failure animation where she talks on the phone with Silvia about "the third installment of a Red Hot Trilogy." Kamiya wants to make it. He planned to from the beginning. But he can't without Capcom's approval and they're not really sure about it just yet
OtakuUnitedStudio Not knowing who that third main threat is and the one pulling the strings really bothers me til this day. Darn it Capcom I really need to know.
@@monadoboy9670 I'm not so sure. But I'm hoping so. The thing is, it's already been 13 years and they haven't even done a remake. They have other series that were more popular and lasted longer but also have gone longer without a sequel and don't appear to be likely to get one, like Commando and Breath of Fire. It just seems like they want to focus more on guaranteed best sellers like Street Fighter and Resident Evil.
Never say never. Just look at Mega Man for proof. Besides, imo SFV and MvCI were such disappointments that putting Ryu & Ken in Smash is one of the best strategies Capcom's had in a long time
You know, I remember when the Viewtiful Joe anime was aired on the kids channel Jetix (now know as Disney XD) here in the UK. I think they never aired the final episode on that channel, which really disappointed me and my brother at the time.
I just picked up Viewtiful Joe the other week and I'm in the process of getting back not only Cube games I previously owned, but ones I've never owned as well. I've also recently got Super Monkey Ball and Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg. The GameCube was awesome.
Yea I never had a GameCube, but I’ve been playing all the games I wanted to play but never got to, on an emulator on my PC. VJ, Snash Bro’s melee, Mario sunshine, luigis mansion etc.
One thing that should be said is that the aesthetic of the main hero is based on a japanese series called Nebula Mask Machineman, a very campy and successful hero back in Japan in the 80's.
I would love a HD collection of the Viewtiful Joe games. Even if it was just a Switch thing rather than being pushed to 4k on PS4 and Xbox One. It's easily one of the best spectacle fighter games ever made.
Wonderful 101 and Viewtiful Joe are connected, Wonder-Cheerleader is Sylvia, also Poseman is Joe, even Wonder-Pink while on the phone with Sylvia in an easter egg is talking about Joe. how'd you miss this? Also way to much content padding, if I pull just relevant and related info from this video it would total about 12 mins
If I remember correctly, the addition of Dante changed some things in the game. Sylvia was replaced with Trish, I think demon Virgil may have replaced a boss, dialogue was changed. I can't remember exactly but I do remember it was more than your typical skin swap a lot of 'guest characters' tend to get.
I'm so glad you covered Viewtiful Joe! It was my very first video game (specifically the PS2 version) and, along with Sonic, was one of the main things that forged my personality, so it was so great learning the full history of the franchise!
Daniel, I promised you on Twitter that if you didn't mention this in the video I'd have to bring it up, so here goes. There's a small French game dev team called The Game Bakers, best known for the title Furi, but I know them best for the Squids series (I was a beta tester on Squids 2) and in 2013 they released a mobile exclusive swipe controlled beat 'em up called Combo Crew. While this game uses many original characters and Sammo from Squids, they did do an official license deal with Capcom to allow Joe to be a playable fighter, and for a mobile exclusive title, Combo Crew is actually a pretty fun beat 'em up. All that aside, this was a super awesome video, and a great look back at one of my favorite Capcom series. I'm still holding out hope for that Viewtiful Joe HD Collection on Switch (Joe and Silvia's colors even match the iconic Joy-Cons, that's some perfect marketing right there!) and of course, that Viewtiful Joe 3.
Viewtiful Joe was one of my favorite game series as a kid. I wish that Viewtiful Joe 2 included a co-op mode. I really enjoyed playing Red Hot Rumble with my brothers and cousins.
At work I randomly think of a really old game or tv show that I haven’t seen or thought of in years and today.. Viewtiful Joe was one of them.. nice video man!
I owned the gamecube in my youth and played on it whenever I could with my twin brother. Viewtiful Joe was one of the games we played. Took turns on each stage to keep it fair. Trying to "style" harder than the other to see who can be the better Joe lol In the end I just let him play while I gave him a play by play of how to make the fights more "viewtiful" and let him go at it.
I never knew about the sequels, and haven't actually played the first game, but it comes highly recommended from a close friend. Great job on this one. :)
While it was OK as a kids' show, the anime wasn't all that great, and I personally didn't think it was all that faithful to the games, even when considering the need for filler, most of which was pretty bad. Only the intro arc and the last episode really follow the story beats that the game actually has very faithfully. Then they created an original character to serve as a mostly useless kid sidekick. One early episode actually introduced a very interesting side-plot involving mass kidnappings from the real world...only for it to never be brought up again. Six Machine was barely ever used and had its name inverted (although honestly, "Machine Six" is actually a better name). Wait, 51 episodes?! We only got the first season here in the U.S. I just assumed that the show was considered so mediocre that it got cancelled before it could adapt the second game. I guess that was only true of the Western release.
To be fair to people arguing Wonderful 101 is a Viewtiful Joe spinoff, there is reason in the actual game itself. One of the Wondeful Ones in the game, Wonder-Cheerleader, is named Sylvianne Lumiere, and looks like Sylvia from Viewtiful Joe, not to mention Wonder Pink, in one of the QTE fails, mentions a Sylvia and Joe in a phone call. Finally, Kamiya-san, himself, apparently, outright stated that Wonder Cheerleader IS Sylvia from Viewtiful Joe.
Back in the Gamecube era, I foolishly believed that 2D side-scrollers were dead, that any game that wasn't fully 3D, wasn't worth my time, and even scoffed at Viewtiful Joe when it first saw it, only to immediately eat my words once I actually played the game. I hope someday Capcom completes the trilogy, and releases a proper 3rd installment. I personally like Red Hot Rumble, but it's not enough to fill the void
Resident Evil 2 was the best of the series, IMO. Multiple, complete and different stores for each character and a special ending if you did them all. I loved it.
Wow I remember wiping at least 3 memory cards with that Viewtiful Joe 2 demo when I was 11. It left such a bad taste in my mouth that I lost interest and never bought it haha...
I literally squealed when i saw you were doing a Complete History of Viewtiful Joe. Even at the local game shop, the guy behind the counter was trying to convince a man to buy this game. I chimed in and told him it was worth it lol
Nice! Love the Viewtiful Joe games! If we get another it'd be great if it was a 3D game like Bayonetta or Devil May Cry. Would fit this series well! BTW there's another gamecube startup sound if you hold Z on 4 controllers plugged in at once.
oh man! viewtiful joe 1 & 2 are 2 of my favorite games of all time, everything clover studio did was absolutely excellent. im about to settle in for this one
Also, people believe Wonderful 101 to be a spin off because one of the character (Wonder-cheerleader) was confirmed by Hideki Takiya himself to be Sexy Silvia, she's good friend with Wonder-Pink. (Joe is also mentioned in the game)
Opinions are opinions and not everyone has to like everything (as I found that Red Hot Rumble was nothing resembling of Smash Bros. and was kick-ass and both Red Hot Rumble and Double Trouble were very fun spin-offs that benefited from being on their respective platforms) but there are a multitude of simply inaccurate mentions in video. Why is it that a lot of Clover Studios / Platinum Games games have been critically acclaimed but sold not so well? Are they not so good at marketing or something? Genuinely confused and curious.
Capcom tends to not like to do marketing for particular titles, due to...whatever circumstance they see fit. God Hand is a prime example. While some of it at this point can only be speculation, it is well known that Capcom DOES NOT like to front marketing costs for the localization of their games--in other words, original Japanese games that make it overseas. See Monster Hunter 3 and Sengoku Basara for more info. The short version is they simply don't do extensive marketing for games they believe won't do well overseas. Which led to Sengoku Basara being left in Japan indefinitely. No matter what anyone says, Capcom went about it the wrong way.
