Check out the 2nd version with a bigger engine and a lot of upgrades! AND it cuts in the correct way this time! ua-cam.com/video/bWDUI_kMxBg/v-deo.html
I was running this saw for about 2 hours at about a 30-50% duty cycle ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxfQm1wmg0ItKDLavxj1nXtQY9HP7EF504 and it did a great job. I used the lever for the built in sharpener to clear chip buildup out more than to actually sharpen the chain. It managed to cut some hardwood stumps much larger than it's size without bothering the neighbors with hours of 2 stroke noise.
Troy and john explorer the woods t a pair of branch shears will do the same job for a hell of a lot cheaper, and certainly nowhere near as noisy, but that’s not why he made it is it?
You know the single thing I like most about the finished product? It SOUNDS like a mini-chainsaw. From the sound alone, you have a decent chance of guessing at what it is. Even with whatever flaws it might have due to things like having to have the blade in upside down, you cannot deny what it is. Awesome job, dude! In my opinion, the upsidedown blade just gives it more character. (As long as it is used properly, at least. Otherwise it's dangerous as hell.)
Unfortunately the chain cuts in only one direction if you see closely, and the engine was spinning it in the opposite direction. By flipping the chain, the correct cutting direction is achieved, but in order to cut safely and avoid any kick back, I was cutting with the upper section of the blade where the teeth of chain are faced towards me, pulling the chainsaw in to the wood and not away. I should have made it more clear in the video because many people are now confused.
Oh, yeah, I understood. Hence my saying as long as it's used properly. I'm not sure I would want to see the results of someone trying to use it like a regular chainsaw not knowing they needed to cut from the bottom with it...

This is epic! Well done. Would you want to "nitrofy" the vintage gas powered drill Diresta gave me? Mustie1 has it right now and it looks like the engine needs some work...maybe a replacement is needed...
Haha that would be awesome but I would never attempt it for 2 reasons: 1) Model nitro engines will never have the power of the engine that this drill has. 2) It would be really pity to destroy an antique tool like this. It's a really cool toy for real men
Interesting... The drill already has a model airplane engine on it, it's just that the carb is the worst design of all time. It's only 20cc. Do they make nitro 20cc engines?
In some addball applications they do make 20cc nitro engines but only for planes and the like. If you did manage to find one, it would probably be quite expensive and old. You could try to source a carb of a better design and hotrod it on there, that would be the most cost effective solution as carbs come up cheap on fleabay.
Awesome project, as always. Incredible engineering. The chain flip at the end killed it for me. Please do a version 2.0. We all want to see it cutting from the top down.
It was spinning the correct way before he flipped the chain. Typically you cut with the bottom of the bar. With the direction of rotation the way he has it you're more likely to slip and jab it into your face.

Not only is it an elaborate 7th grade science fair failure, it is also 40 times worse for the environment. What he accomplished in his experiment is what NOT to do to a cordless saw!

i think that engine was running lean on the lsn and i think ur idle was to big as well :p good job on making it though :)
an the excess fuel meant the hsn was a bit too rich but then again i only really use .21 engines
could u not have the motor spinning the other way , it is a 2 stroke
yes but they're designed to run one way and the bolts are tightened the way so they don't come unloose when going forward
and won't run well unless you had gears that changes it to reverse like traxxas
I watched the project with interest . One question though, when did you realise the chain was turning the wrong direction?
Unfortunately from the beginning. A nice idea would be to flip both the chain and the whole assembly so it would cut like the real thing...
You are also spinning the gear set backward which it is not really designed to do, might be fine, but could cause issues.
what song did you use at 2:05?
I'm confused. How is backwards?

The amount of workmanship you put into this project is unbelievable, very high quality. My only problem is the exhaust fumes that it’s going to produce from nitro fuel, carcinogenic, very dangerous.....but I still like it :-)
how to waste time do this
Great machine work on all the parts needed for this project.
It's not only that he made a nitro powered handheld chainsaw, but the fit and finish are exquisite
The smurfs would've loved this saw!! :D
Being a tree climber, cutter and a model airplane enthusiast I love this !
