I wonder if almost every American city had a great fire. It seems impossible to avoid with wooden buildings and inadequate fire fighting ability. My little town shows on Sanborn insurance maps that it was an average year when a block or two burned down. The award-winning (in competitions against other small town fire depts) fire dept was excellent, though, so it didn't all go up in flames. Now I'll have to read up on the other times Portland was rebuilt. :)

You should add Maine to the title to improve viewership. I almost didn’t click thinking it was the other Portland.
