    the fan will create negative pressure and suck dust in around the sides, negating the purpose of the paint booth. a better design would be the fan creating positive pressure with a dust filter, and a dedicated exhaust with a fume filter. positive pressure is a vital part of clean rooms, and would eliminate the risk of igniting paint fumes. also i would suggest a set of bright lights for the booth to ensure even coats of paint. dont forget the properly rated particle masks!

    • @Bobsofax64
      @Bobsofax64 8 років тому +1

      +Josh Ipoditunes Good suggestions. That Linus didn't use a positive pressure scenario, even though he recommends them in case airflow videos, proves one more time: "Does as we say, not as we do" :D.
      BTW: Breathing with masks in a negative pressure scenario won't be a nice experience...

    • @MrJoshipoditunes
      @MrJoshipoditunes 8 років тому +4

      +Bobsofax64 XD thanks!
      The actual pressure you feel shouldn't make that much of a difference, but I see what you mean. The generic dust filter masks you often see are uncomfortable and not very effective. I use the 3M reusable ones from Home Depot that makes the experience much more comfortable and even safer for a wider range of fumes.

    • @Bobsofax64
      @Bobsofax64 8 років тому

      +Josh Ipoditunes I use 3M 4251 half mask respirators, they are great. Bought them when I lived in Beijing for research work (pyrolysis) and general life when the air was bad enough. It's uncomfortable enough to breath with those in an normal environment, but it gets quite bad when you have to use them in a chamber with a high amount of negative pressure (because of the toxic fumes and residues during/after experiments) and it's not good for the lungs. You should always use positive pressure when it's feasible.

    ok so your fan is exhausting the air so where is your filtered intake air? linus you need a couple filters on another wall of the booth to supply clean air into the booth. every spray booth has intake and exhaust filters. also, just a tip but your booth and paintjobs will be cleaner if you run it positive pressure. use the fan to blow clean air in instead of sucking it out. a booth under a vacuum can suck in dirty unfiltered shop air from every leak you failed to seal.

    • @LinusTechTips
      @LinusTechTips  8 років тому +16

      +Xtreme Kreations yeah I used it today and while it was WAAAY better than not having any kind of enclosure, I should have gone with my gut and set it up the way you're saying instead of blindly following the instructions. It's no big deal though. I can just re-do the plastic down the line when I need to paint something bigger.

    • @michelthibodeau3474

      +Xtreme Kreations Maybe he can use a couple of those Noctua fans in LTT colors for the intake! 8^)

    • @stevenporter7443
      @stevenporter7443 8 років тому

      +Xtreme Kreations Hey Xtreme, I have a question because I am confused about the second part of your comment; should he have run both an intake and an exhaust for the best performance, then the second part of the comment was to optimize what he has now? Thanks! Steven

    • @Xtremekreations
      @Xtremekreations 8 років тому +3

      +Steven Porter yes steve that's right. any confined or sealed space needs to replace the air you are removing from it. the exhaust needs to be filtered to catch the overspray so your not just blowing that around the shop and the intake needs to be filtered so your not sucking in dust from the room you are in. now to make his setup cleaner, he can flip that fan around and blow the air into the booth so any air going in is filtered. we know there is no way he is going to completely seal that enclosure 100% so in the current setup if the fan is exhausting then there will be a neg pressure inside so any small areas that aren't sealed will leak in unfiltered air. the best setup would be one fan blowing in at one end and one blowing out on the other end. this keeps a neutral pressure in the booth and prob higher airflow. I paint for a living and spend about 40-50 hrs a week standing in a spray booth. while the home made setup like linus did isn't the most ideal no matter what you do, with a couple tweaks it can certainly be functional for small home spraying.

      Xtreme Kreations Thank you sir! Very much appreciated for the detailed explanation. I think I will definitely try this for a small project I have in mind. Thanks Linus!

    • @trikstari7687
      @trikstari7687 8 років тому +2

      +Chris Nagy The fan is pulling air out of the enclosure, meaning that air will be sucked into the enclosure, from elsewhere. That air coming in, will be unfiltered, and dusty, and said dust, will end up in your paint.
      The set up needs two filtered fans. One blowing air into the enclosure, the other exhausting air out of the enclosure.

    Interesting design but you mentioned in the start that you wanted to avoid dust in your paint. You have a filtered exhaust but not a filtered intake, how are you going to prevent dust from being sucked into the booth during painting?
    And keep a door open, the exhaust filter will keep airborne paint down to a minimum but will not filter out the smell.

    Also, next time, use the PVC like K-nex and make a supporting frame on the side to hold your box fan. As long as you're running it fairly slowly, you should be okay without dedicated exhaust fans, otherwise, just make another framed-in opening on another side to tape in another furnace filter.

    I would worry about dust entering the booth with the fan exhausting and no filter on the intake. Just use a respirator and no fan for a better result. Yes, I have professional experience in small to medium paint booths. Also, at the bottom of the legs, they should be tied together like at the top.

    Linus, as long as her glasses are not made of actual glass. Modern polycarbonate glasses can double as safety glasses. Although safety glasses with more coverage may be preferable for many projects

    +LinusTechTips Most prescription glasses are tempered in some way giving a basic safety rating, but the size of the glasses does directly effect its... effectiveness. (CNC machinist here, so i am used to metal shards flying every which way). with your job here normal glasses are fine. lol. Keep up the interesting and ever changing content guys love your channels!

    "Soylent" is a very very unfortunate name for a food based product but hey, it's not like "SOYLENT GREEN IS PEOPLE!" is part of pop culture and a reference everyone gets even if they didn't see the original movie.

    Linus, I would have put the filter on the top and used the fan on the bottom to draw air out. Creating a down draft booth. keeps over spray and dust to a minimum.

    Linus, Flip your box fan around, you want positive pressure and filtered air inside your booth. If you pull the air out it will suck dust in.

    Rather than cutting a big hole in the back, why not drill smallish holes on the inside sections of pipe and use the hollow pipe outlet/inlet sections as the air extraction? just thought it might be neater. :) x

    I can't lower the quality, it's set to 1080p, UA-cam is probably assuming that I don't live in a 7th world country with a 625KB/s DL speed.

    Linus, I have a great idea!
    Why don't you paint each and every component you could(motherboard, gpu, ssd, psu, water cooling kit, cables, and other things which would work fine even if painted) in the LinusTechTips orange-gray theme, install them on a case designed and painted in the same theme and do an 'ultimate custom paint job for your PC' video.
    I think it's a good idea...what say Linus?

      +Daniel Jackson From what I recall (having researched it a long time ago) it's pretty much tasteless. The idea is that it contains all the ingredients you need to survive in an efficient concentrated form, therefore you don't have to spend unnecessary amounts of money on real food, parts of which end up being wasted or turning to fat. In other words, you could actually live off the stuff if you want.

    • @CarelessCapybara
      @CarelessCapybara 8 років тому

      +Daniel Jackson Had it last week, didn't taste that bad. For those who haven't had it, it kind of tastes like a liquid version of the sticks (pieces that aren't marshmallows) in lucky charms.
