      I recently discovered using multiband distortion to bitcrush, but only the high frequencies. Gives you a hint of the old school sampler sound, but without making the whole thing sound like a chip tune.

      Something I think I've mentioned on another one of these things, if I'm trying to get a clearer snare sound without making it so "big", sometimes it helps to pick a prominent instrument that's active in the mix and add a tiny amount of sidechain compression from the snare to that channel.
      Maybe not so applicable in modern pop or hip-hop where you probably want the snare to be one of the most prominent sounds in the song since the main elements of the song are likely to be percussion and vocals; but when you're writing or mixing something in a style more resembling, saaaay, thrash metal, where the drum track is fast but the instruments need to be prominent, I've found this can be a big help.
      If I'm really struggling with getting a snare properly heard in a busy mix I'll sometimes use both this and distortion or saturation.

      Sometimes a limiter is what you need, but it tends to just remove energy from transients, while a saturator feels like it's not removing energy, but transforming it into additional harmonic content so that the perceived loudness is similar and often times even higher.

    Working with tape and analog equipment early in my career has made this concept easier to transition to use in the box. Saturation is definitely something that is easy to define, but there is no better way to understand it than pumping level into the tape machine until you get the right amount of warmth or pop. Thanks for being so free with your knowledge and experience! Great stuff!

    I've only recorded analog, even in real studios, until earlier this year when I finally had to get new gear. I have been having some minor issues with getting things to sound good on digital. I'm not using a DAW, just a standalone recorder, but it's digital. & I never use plugins (whatever those are) or even anything else except maybe a pedal or two. I guess it just takes time to figure it out ...just wish there were videos with tips for people who don't use DAWs.

    • @nikolaudio
      @nikolaudio 2 роки тому

      @@kdeeone yes but my point is that in order to get drums that hit hard, there was some form of trading off dynamic content for harmonic content. Be it already done in the sample itself, or having just the transient clipped/mushed, and other times the type of beat called for the whole dynamic range of the drum to be left intact
