Your strategy is very smart. I'm American, so English is my mother tongue, and I want to learn French(which is close to English) and Korean(which isn't). But I want to learn every language I hear, which is about 20 of them.

Thanks dude. Just curious: How did you find this video? I'm always surprised that I get 10 comments already after if I posted the video just 2 hours ago :P

Wouter Corduwener I found your video of you speaking french and some other languages a while back and I subscribed. I find you a real inspiration, so I study as much as I can. When I'm unmotivated, i watch your videos. They give me life. :-)

Cheers dude. Maybe I can make a video about how you can find motivation if you lost it. I hope this kind of videos help language learners not to give up. On the other hand I also like it to make videos where I'm speaking foreign languages with drunk people to show how fun language learning can be.

Wouter Corduwener Thay is a great idea, I'd watch it. That'd be really cool and funny, talking to drunk people, i think it'd be a fun thing to do. 😄

The problem is when two languages have similar words but different meanings, like German and Dutch.
I'm an English teacher in a course in place that has 7 languages classes, when I don't have students, I try to join another language class. Once I joined German class, the teacher asked: "Wie gehst?" I thought she asked my name, because I know enough Dutch, and in Dutch "wie" means "who", and everytime she said "ist es klar?" it sounded strange to me, because I still thought she said in strange context, I thought she asked if we finished, but actually she meant 'is it clear?'.
Yeah, sometimes even if same family, it's still confusing haha...

Fun fact here in Philippines, we mix English and Tagalog in informal language. it would be really easier for you

    Question Wouter
Suppose I already learned Mandarin Chinese. I'm not great at it, but I'm used to it and can hold a conversation in it. Would you recommend picking a difficult language, like Arabic, along with a language close to Mandarin, like Cantonese, which would be a tad easier for you since you already know Mandarin.
disclaimer: I actually don't know Mandarin at all, so I can't actually vouch if Cantonese is easier to learn if you already know it or not, but you get my question right?

Interesting question. It depends: what's your mother tongue? Cantonese and Mandarin are not so close, so I think it will be a hard job. If you speak Mandarin already, I would improve my Mandarin and learn Arabic at the same time in this situation. If you have a higher level in Mandarin, you can watch movies or listen to music to relaxed a bit and then you could learn Arabic when you have some more energy. And then I recommend you to learn Cantonese in combination with another language which is closer to your native language.

      My native language is English.
I ask because I kind of have this laundry list of languages I'm interested in taking a stab at, and not so many of them are closely related to English. I actually work in a touristy area like yourself, and thought I could help ease the language barrier a bit for our non-english customers by learning some languages my department encounters regularly.
And I also figured if I used this "two languages, one close to your own language and one more challenging one" method, then I'd run out of english-related languages on my list before I'd be finished with the more (for lack of a better word) foreign ones.

Is there any other language which is not close to your native language, but which is easy for you? Then you could use this language as a second language, otherwise it's better to focus on one language (in my humble opinion). Did you ever tried a language like Indonesian? I think Indonesian is not so hard, because you don't have articles, no tones, no conjugations, the adjectives are not changing and the grammar in general is easy. The only hard element is the fact that the words can be longer compared with other languages. This is my advice, but never forget that I'm a language learner like you and that you can also use your own strategy if it works out better for you.

Indonesian and Tagalog are on my laundry list (the two languages you mentioned on your Easiest Asians Languages video), and I don't know much about either of them, but I'll give them a shot as an easier balance to the more complicated languages on my list.
Thanks for the advice Wouter! Keep up the good videos :D

Haha it's always cool to hear examples :) I think it's cool if you can choose anytime between two languages.
