I think the gambling addiction played a large part in this as well. This case is local for me, and it struck me as odd that the couple withheld money from Bobbitt because of his drug addiction, yet blew through most of it gambling. Addiction is addiction.

I know gambling and a drug addict.
Can not say what is worse. Gambling addict destroyed their family by borrowing from shady people, but drug addict had psychosis and almost killed someone. A drug addict is now in jail and a gambling addict is still gambling. Those are both addictions and both needed psychological help. It is all around terrible situation. It seems both lead to a path of self-destruction.

This story exemplifies the worst and the best of humanity. I find the actions of these scammers to be revolting. They performed a manipulative and unintelligent scheme with the purpose to fulfill their greed and show off a lifestyle that was clearly out of their reach.
On the other hand, we have the donors. I know a lot of people have said how gullible they were, and I can understand the argument, maybe they were gullible. However, I do feel that there are many generous people out there who would like to do good for society in some capacity. I think their generosity is commendable. As for the gullibility argument, I would say that once the money is out of our hands we may never know what happens to it, that’s the whole nature of charity. Even the most prestigious charity organizations can defraud people. Either way, I do appreciate the good hearted individuals who are willing to do something good for others.

With the guy being a being a gambler, that means who was prone to certain kind of behavior's. Im sure the gal was 100% to participate. they were lucky idiots. Cases show that after making off with a big score, lack of secrecy and exuberant spending always gets them caught. Just recently, one notorious bank robber confessed to a robbery 50 years ago while on his deathbed. Not even his wife knew up to that point, and authorities still don't know how he spent the money. He hightailed across the country and abandoned his parents and friends who never knew if he was alive or dead. That is the level of discipline required. But mostly idiots defraud and steal, so they'll always be caught. Ted Conrad is his name if you are wondering.

While I didn't panhandle, it was still difficult. Especially when non profit agencies, and social services being so short staffed. Plus, add to the fact that when budget cuts happen, it's always the poor who suffers.
Plus, I have lived around addicts of drugs and alcohol, during my time as a homeless person, plus when I lived in an SRO ( Single Room Occupancy) hotels.

Many of the people who came into the methadone clinic I worked in were addicted to prescription opioids. You would never know by looking at them that they were addicts. I really respect how hard they were working to make their lives better. The stereotype of the homeless heroin addict somehow garners more pity from the uneducated. I don’t have the answers but handing out money isn’t helping our addicted brothers and sisters. Mental healthcare is the only step forward for the individual. Then comes jobs and affordable housing.

      I wanna preface my
comment to you by saying you do
awesome work and people like you are truly helping and I really respect you. I wanted to respond to you hoping you could give me some insight or helpful information. While I was fortunate enough to never be homeless, I was an opoid addict (first oxy pills then heroin) for a several years (been clean since march 2014). When I see homeless people, I tend to give them the cash I have, between $3-$20. And I really don't even attempt to assume what
they could or will spend that money on because it's theirs now. My thought process was always that if they need a bottle of liquor to fall asleep tonight, outside in the cold, that doesn't seem totally unreasonable. I know many
people who can't sleep in their perfectly warm and safe beds without a sleeping pill or a glass of bourbon at night (and I'm not saying that's okay either). I'm just pointing out that if so many people can't even get thru their day/sleep in their own homes without some sort of substance, it's understandable that homeless people might also feel the
need to self medicate. Another thing I think, when handing over cash that
might go to drugs, is that I really
have the kind of money to help this person get mental health treatment (although I agree that would be far
better) or the resources to get them a job, but I can give them something that will help them "get well", as they say. I know what it's like to be sick as hell from withdrawal and I can't imagine standing outside in the elements, having people
scream rude stuff at me, all while sick. And I can help them "feel better" for the next 6 of 7 hours so they can panhandle without immense discomfort and make money to get a meal, maybe a
motel room, and yes maybe another
shot of heroin. but that's just their day to day life, and I feel like it's all I I do to help (although I also understand it is enabling).
I hope you understand what I mean by that. And if you have any advice on how to be helpful in a more meaningful way to the homeless in my community (I live in Oklahoma City and there is a rather large homeless population here), I would really appreciate you taking the time to respond.

I never give to go fund me. The best thing to do, if you have charity goals, is to do small monthly contributions to your local food bank, your local homeless shelter and your local church’s feed the hungry program. You do this and your charity goals are ongoing and accomplished regularly. Also if, all people did this our food bank and homeless shelters will be properly funded. This is also a good thing and does save you somewhat from giving based on emotions. I can honestly say I am able to walk by a pan handler without feeling guilty for not having given anything since I started giving a small amount monthly. I think it helps us get into the habit of charity as well. Also increase your charity goals each year by a small percentage. We must always remember those who face difficult times but we aught to do so rationally if they aren’t family.
Also it is important to remember that you aren’t any better than the folks the money is intended to help. You could be them one day to. There for the Grace of God ... so practice charity, but don’t do it with guilt or emotion. Do it as a duty and as a habit

Having been a homeless addict in a past life, I had on many occasions given some of my miserly funds away to others in need. Yes, addictions have incredible power and control over people, but doesn't automatically make everyone a self-serving, selfish, and greedy asshole with no humanity *all of the time* - if I was well and in a good spot, I'd help others, if I was sick and trying to get well, that's when the selfish, self-serving asshole would come out. When you do manage to get out of that hole, I think it's very important to remember how terrible you felt, how it changed you for the worst, all the stress, all the misery!! I suspect they knew full well that greed is bad but chose it anyway.

It’s not the fault of the goodwilled people who gave. However, this case shows that discernment is definitely needed before giving, to ensure help is utilized the way it should be.
To be certain help is received, maybe the gift of time is best- the most valuable asset there is. After all, it seems that children raised with parents who give of their time more than of their money grow into happier, healthier people.
Thank you, Dr. G! As always, you bring up great things for us to think about! 😀👍

As usual, you gave a stellar recap of this situation and the psychological factors at work! But as someone who has the fault of being completely unaware and unconcerned over automobile things, I had to share that despite having a very noticeable gas gauge and a well working low gas warning signal on my Rogue, I often find myself far from home and shocked that my gas tank is almost dry, and crossing my fingers and coasting as much as possible to the nearest gas station! I wasn’t always like this, but my husband of 10 years has definitely spoiled me to the point that I just don’t give gas a second thought. And I have a feeling I’m not the only one being spoiled! So, I wouldn’t think twice over this gal running out of gas!

As a recovered addict I have to full support Dr grande on two points . First no addict on skid row is every going to just give up $20.00 ... it's just not going to happen. When a person is in active addiction their sole purpose is to get high and remain high .
Second addiction is not a problem that can be helped nor solved with money, for a person to get clean they have to have a desire to do so, they will also need a large support group that is trained in helping people to get sober.

"no self respecting panhandler would spend money on somebody".
Way to stereotype, Dr. Todd. Poor people help each other out too.
