According to Manson himself in his book, Long Hard Road Out of Hell, the song was inspired by an apocalyptic nightmare he had during the cocaine-fueled binge that was the recording of Antichrist Superstar. The band falling apart, the constant betrayals he found himself on the bad end of, and the feeling that he was the only person that wanted to be there getting it done, like he was some sort of father figure that the band and everyone hated for making them do their homework, that's mainly it.
I like to think the "Tourniquet" he refers to himself as is like placing a bandage over a festering wound. He feels as if the person in question isn't willing to do the work to treat the wound, they just hide it despite the infection growing.
The tourniquet is a woman - he refers to her as 'she'. She's literally turned into an object. He says later that he is the tourniquet, this fits with his imagined oppression. 'Take your hatred out on me, make your victim my head'. This sounds like the allegations his ex partners made against him, but he imagines himself to really be the victim. He certainly reacts in the extreme when they leave him, telling ERW's mother (aswell as the media) how many times he was cutting himself after she left. Emotionally, he is still in his abusive childhood. It seems he also made a conscious decision, as a boy, to stop being victimised *by victimising others*.
This song has got such a dark vibe to it. Manson's voice and screams are so haunting. Recently discovered this track... Maybe two or three weeks back while lifting some iron at the gym. The aggression in this track is so pronounced. Really motivates you to fully exert yourself... Even if your near exhaustion.
I think this song is directed at his ex gf (the one he was with when this album took off; think they'd been together for a few yrs). She did something (cheated? dumped him? had an abortion?) that really fucked him up emotionally, therefore this song.
@@msmltvcktl He was going through a rough patch that was due to numerous things (including the deteriorating relationship with his girlfiend and an abortion), and was doubting his artistry and his own existence. The reversed whispering in the beginning of the track actually translates to, "This is my most vulnerable moment." And he recorded that bit and added it to the demo after having a rather large breakdown. All this info was discovered in his autobiography, "Long Hard Road Out Of Hell" which is definitely an interesting read. Really put a lot more meaning into this song for me too; after knowing some of the backstory behind it.
This song reminds me of my ex. Like an addictive relationship that's toxic, where you love them more than you can love yourself, and they just love the devotion you provide.
I'm going through this right now, been with this woman for 13 years and I catch her cheating and lying to me , I have nothing but her and I continue to be abused
'I wrapped our love in all this foil, silver tight like spider legs I never wanted it to ever spoil, but flies will lay their eggs' - No matter how hard he tried to preserve his love, the love itself wore away and was consumed from the inside out. And the memory of that love reflects as if it would through foil; now tainted, cold and broken. One of my personal favourite Manson lines, even if my interpretation is 'wrong'. Genius lyricism.
Except when you have lived the reality of it and it consumes you body and soul and you find yourself a empty husk just going through the motions of a life. Then you find yourself aching from the absence of it with every waking moment and you know that you are the cause of your own damnation. Then it is just agony. But yeah I guess it could be what you said too.
Hi, Dunja i think, that i know what u mean. His music so addict. i need to stop liste for some time. but i been in two concerts i will not forget. 4ever
An absolute heartwrenching classic, still adore it 20 plus years later. Not only does it bring back memories, but it still relates to my continuously disfunctionly life I live with abusive garbage.
Manson is one of the very best at those long..beastly..hate filled screams. Not to mention the impact he's had on music and society itself. Can't get enough of his evil.
I was a stoner metal kid in 1996, and somehow I really DESPISED Manson. It took me listening to them again years later to realize how well written their songs were.
The envy I have for those of you that were growing up when this came out is unbelievable. You guys get Tool, NIN, and Marilyn Manson. I get Tool, and pop stars
Both Brian and Trent have definatly seen better days but holy shit, Maynard James Fucking Keenan creates masterpieces, and he still sounds amazing. I love Tool so much omfg lol.
Corbin Hollars actually we had red hot chilli peppers, soundgarden , pantera, rage against the machine, and Alice and chains too, but rest assured there was a lot of trash out at that time too, the difference was those bands got the exposure cause they were straight up dope.
BTW just from a regular dude's perspective, you don't have to be emotionally imbalanced to like this song. I always sing along wearing a noticeable smile
This song stuck with me since I was a kid. It meant a lot more to me then. I just didn't have an understanding of it. Yet as I grew up it's has the same meaning. It's an amazing song. One of the best songs in history!
BTW a TOURNIQUET is also something used during intra-venous injection. Many users ask or need help with holding the tournequet so they can find the vein and inject and therefor get the high they want so bad. The tourniquet holder is just being used so that the other person can get high. So perhaps he uses that word tourniquet specifically because he felt used by the other band mates and reznor which MM has said he felt let down by. Being in a band is hard, like having a relationship with 5 ppl.
Can't believe it has been 23 years now since this album and song debuted. It was a favorite of mine back then and still remains a favorite to this day. Who else still loving and listening in 2019???
On most occasions, I listen to this and other songs by the antichrist superstar to help cope with my anxiety, and it actually does seem to calm me down, which is quite weird, for me, at least. I also listen to this at my youth club (and one Thursday before Xmas, I listened to it while at computer club) rather often. I absolutely love this song more than anything else. Without Marilyn Manson, I wouldn't have found myself. Dozens of hugs and kisses from Britain 🖤💚
Always a Manson classic. One of the best off of the Antichrist Superstar, and that's really saying something considering Antichrist was and still is his best album to date. Easily one of my favorite Manson songs... and I know probably every song off the first five albums of his.
Im past that time. The way I got through it was recognizing my situation and trying to make it better for myself. Cause only you can change these things, you are the creator of your perception and I understand things can be hard but the way you pull through it is to make yourself happy. Find joy in the little things, speak out if you need help. As an example I express my pain through art and I always feel relieved after it. Find something that your talented at to express the way you feel and I guarantee you'll feel better. Things get better man I promise 😊
Hey man they come and go. Its hard to let go especially after 9 years. But learn from the expirence and I bet you can find someone else ten times better, just give it some time. I can imagine its painful but it will pass. To better times mate ;)

Wow! This is pretty good. I never got into Manson before, the only song I've heard is 'man that your fear' and of course 'beautiful people'. It's sometimes too dark, but we all have those days when we feel like shit
I think this song has multiple meanings , i agree with BlossomingFreak but if you think about it , it's the third part of the Omega/Coma white saga , The first song is actually Coma black from the third album Holy wood , then it's Coma white from mechanical animals , and finally it's this. +Ethan Onymous Thank you. I always thought it was about a sleep paralysis episode that Manson had gone through or something like that.
I just finished the book. I love it. This one of my favorite Manson songs.

Manson is one of the very best at those long..beastly..hate filled screams. Not to mention the impact he's had on music and society itself. Can't get enough of his evil.
Dylan Thomas imho, society is more evil than Manson. At least Manson is an honest representation of society.
But he’s not honest.
That's just a character. Real evil is much more discreet.
When he breathes and says "If it hurts, baby tells me", I get the craziest chills!
This is my favorite song to play when I need to purge my anger and hurt. So cathartic.
