Astrophotography Image Processing: Is Pixinsight TOO DIFFICULT for Beginners?

- Digital image processing is a major component of astrophotography, and Pixinsight is the go-to software for many people, but is Pixinsight too difficult for beginners?
When I started doing astrophotography, I learned how to stack my lights, flats, darks and Bias frames in Deep Sky Stacker. I used Photoshop for my image processing, and I also used Starnet as a separate application. Pixinsight combines all of these and more into one program. I was not sure if I wanted to try Pixinsight or not, because it has a reputation for being difficult to learn. But honestly, it's not any harder to learn than Photoshop. You just have to take it one process at a time.
Astrophotography is not a hobby for impatient people, and it takes a while to learn about the gear, how to capture data, and then how process that data. If you having a hard time deciding if you want to try Pixinsight, don't let your skill level stop you. It's not too difficult for beginners to learn. Now mastering it? That's a topic for another day...I'm pretty confident with my Pixinsight workflow, but nowhere near to mastering it.

Just bought pix Insight and your vids are helping me a lot. I've used Siri, Nebulosity 2 and a few other free software packages before now but the way I see it is this. You spend all that money on astro gear, all that time imaging so why not invest in what is possibly the most important part. Processing. Yeah it looks daunting but vids like this help me a LOT. I'm watching you other vids too.

Crap ton……..now I get it!! I am new to Astrophotography and I started learning pixinsight. I have noticed that it’s just a lot of getting use to how and what to do to get what you desire out of the data. Thanks for the video!!
Pixinsight is awesome, but it definitely takes some time learning everything. I'm still constantly learning new techniques!
I had been using Siril, and thought it was working pretty well for me--until I needed to process a two-panel mosaic of M31. So now I'm trying to learn Pixinsight. It looks like a steep learning curve, but I'm already liking the results I'm seeing.

Nice video. As someone who started astrophotography with no Photoshop experience I have found pixinsight easier to use. I currently use PI for 95% of my processing.. and touch things up a little in PS.
Exactly what I do. Photoshop is much more fluid than Pixinsight for those final color and level tweaks at the end of processing. Plus cropping and exporting in various sizes is much quicker in PS as well. But I came to Pixinsight with quite a bit of Photoshop experience because of the other types of photography I do. Getting started with Pixinsight is really not that hard...mastering Pixinsight is just as difficult as mastering Photoshop. And I'm nowhere near that lol.
I use DSS and Affinity Photo to do stacking and processing. I the future I'd like to have and use Pixinsight, but first like to make some decent photos with the software I have now.
It's good to try different software out at first. The good thing is that most astrophotography processing software has free trials so you can see if you'll like it before you buy.
Completely agree. PixInsight is easier to learn if you have no working knowledge of either PI or PS. STF blew my mind the first time I used it.
For absolute beginners, applying a permanent STF with Histogram Transformation would be enough to make them happy with those first images.

Cool man! Don't give up on Photoshop though, I still use it quite a bit on my images. I mostly use Pixinsight, but I use Photoshop for certain things that just seem smoother or easier to do in Photoshop.

Pixinsight is indeed an amazing tool. The subscription model of photoshop put me off immediately and yes the STF is some voodoo magic for sure and allows some processing in the linear state before stretching the histogram
Absolutely. Being able to fix gradients, color calibrate, and denoise, all before making a permanent stretch is pure gold. As much as I hate the subscription model for Adobe, I still need Photoshop for my daytime photography, and I still use it quite a bit for certain things in my astro processing. The ability to use layers is an awesome tool that Pixinsight doesn't offer. Also, even though the GAME script in Pixinsight is helpful, it's still no match for certain masks you can do in Photoshop.

Only issue with pixinsight is the nomenclature which needs to be translated as compared to photoshop the photoshop nomenclature is way more intuitive.
I agree, although some nomenclature just won't translate because Pix was made specifically for astro while PS was made for general photography. I would also say that Pixinsight's UI could definitely use an update. I'm used to it now, but it is still clunky in some ways compared to Photoshop IMO. I use Pix for most of my processing including color balancing/tonal mapping, but I still like to use PS for final tweaking of color and levels because it's just so more fluid to do it in PS, especially with the ability to do those adjustments in layers.
@@ZoliroAstro Exactly, the fluidity is what Photoshop wins it for me, i can do almost everything in Astropixel processor then Photoshop, but I'm a very adept Photoshop user, the only thing for me would be the merging of different sized images from different cameras, not sure how to do that, would love to see when you do that video.
If you think this is difficult to learn as a beginner! Try learning how to play a Guitar! Then you will learn what difficult really means!

Pixinsight has about the worst UI of any commercial software I've come across. Of course you can learn anything, but god I hate it.
Yeah, I have to agree. It definitely takes some getting used to. That's why I still use Photoshop for my final levels and colors adjustments on my images. Pixinsight can do it, it's just so much faster to do it in Photoshop using sliders.
