      @@HammerItTennis Since I just wrapped 2 rackets, any harm using it or will I have to start over? This means buying a grip with adhesive and then wrapping the over grip 2 more times for each racket. Your thoughts are appreciated!

    • @HammerItTennis

      @@evanm.jacobson1514 the factory grip and “replacement” grips not only have adhesive, but they are considerably thicker. Also, the racquets grip size is figured with the thicker grip. This helps give you more cushioning between your hand and the hard handle. I would suggest getting a replacement grip and then over gripping with your Tournagrip.

    Q: how often does. Racket need to be re-strung? 👍🏼👍🏼

    • @HammerItTennis
      @HammerItTennis  Рік тому +1

      Obviously you’ll restring if/when strings break, but the frequency of restringing will depend on a lot of factors. How often you play, where you store your racquets, and the string type. A very general rule of thumb is if you don’t break strings playing, is to restring a year the amount of days you play per week. So if you typically play 2-3 days a week, restring at least 2-3 times each year.

    Thank you! Ever tried to cut shorten a racquet? Why you ask? My dtr started playing tennis shes 9 and she wants to compete. But USTA wants her to start at 25in. She loves her current adult size racquet. I want to cut and rewrap the grip. What you think?

    • @HammerItTennis
      @HammerItTennis  4 роки тому +1

      I would not recommend cutting an adult racquet down for a junior. Most major racquet brands have specifically designed racquets for juniors. Not just the cheap two piece metal designs, but basically adult frames that are scaled down. The grip size on an adult racquet is probably too big as well. Most adult racquets are not smaller than a 1 (4 1/8 inch grip). Junior racquets will fit your child's hands much better.

      Marcelo Elgueta the side that is covered with plastic generally goes on the outside. Usually it helps keep a little tack to the grip. Some grips it’s more of a protective layer from itself when it’s in the package.

    Why would I need to change my replacement grip?

    • @HammerItTennis
      @HammerItTennis  7 місяців тому +1

      After a lot of use they begin to break down and you lose the cushion of the grip. Ultimately if it is used too much they tear up, although not as easily as an over grip.

    • @bryanjonathan1580
      @bryanjonathan1580 7 місяців тому +1

      @HammerItTennis I usually use my Babolat Pure Aero 23, and cushioning is great, but I'm trying and old Yonex R-27 with original grip and it feels very hard. Maybe I should change it then. Part of my thumb hurts.

    • @HammerItTennis
      @HammerItTennis  7 місяців тому +1

      @@bryanjonathan1580 absolutely I would change the grip! Changing the grip with a new grip should restore the cushion. Some players prefer that hard feeling and they’ll use a leather grip. The level of cushioning is up to you but if you prefer the cushion then replacing with a cushioning type grip should help out your thumb.

    Thank you Sir but do you have a video that shows how to apply a “replacement grip” to a Wilson Blade v8 or v9 please? This is a nightmare because the end of the butt cap is round and the tape does not stick down when you fold it over as the adhesive only covers the centre of the grip. Poor design by Wilson.

  • @TwoCowzBrowze

    A few weeks ago I took off the thick 'grip' like material and I've purchased what I believe is an 'overgrip'. Without replacing the thick foundation grip, I just put an overgrip on the racket and it honestly feels quite nice. Are there any drawbacks to doing this, besides like gloves in baseball that reduce vibration or something?

    • @HammerItTennis
      @HammerItTennis  4 роки тому +3

      Depending on the type of material that your grip is made of, which usually is a hard foam type material (could be plastic), it could possibly damage the grip its self as you will be putting more pressure on the material than you would if the force was dispersed by the thicker replacement grip. Also, if the bevels are "sharp" you will more than likely develop some bad blisters on your hand, and as you mentioned feel ALOT more vibration and "stingers" on off center hits. If you prefer the more firm feel I would recommend putting a leather replacement grip for a more traditional feel but still protect the grip material and your hand.
      Here are some grips Wilson Leather Grip: amzn.to/3i7bkXE
      Tourna Leather Grip: amzn.to/2DqNJCx
      Gamma Leather Grip: amzn.to/2DJOTso

    • @Robteee
      @Robteee 2 роки тому

      If you feel that only using an over grip feels better, it’s probably because the original racket and grip had too wide of a grip. You’ll definitely lose out on vibration dampening but I would look for a smaller racket grip overall.
      There are lots of guides to determining what size you need online

    Nice demonstration and advice on regripping tennis rackets. The only thing I do differently is not peel off that much of the non-stick backing as I wrap so that my fingers do not contact the grip adhesive directly. This avoids any oil and dust on my fingers from getting onto the adhesive. It probably does not matter but I’ve got OCD!

    • @HammerItTennis
      @HammerItTennis  4 роки тому +1

      It just depends on the grip if I take it all off or just a little at a time. Sometimes the paper backing is not on very well and it just falls as you are putting the grip on. Sometimes the paper is almost stuck on! Either way if you can just peel it as you go that is best! Glad you like the video!

    • @HammerItTennis
      @HammerItTennis  3 роки тому +1

      You can try a couple different things. Gently take a knife/scissors and cut a line down through the glue and remains of the grip. If the handle is made of a hard foam type material be careful not to cut into the handle. You can also try using a hairdryer and heat up the remains and glue and see if that loosens it up enough to peel off. Lastly you could try goo-gone or mineral spirits or other solvent type chemical and try to rub the glue off. Hope that helps! Good luck!

      Overgrips are used so you don’t have to change the main grip as often. They are thinner and are made to be changed every few times playing or even within a match. Over grips are usually much cheaper and act to absorb sweat and then changed out.

    • @HammerItTennis

      Usually replacement grips have adhesive on the back. Overgrips typically do not because they are meant to go on top of your replacement grip and not damage it.

    Have been replacing grips on tennis and squash racquets for 40 years, and found it better to have the tapered end at the top (not at the bottom), that way you don't need scissors.

    • @HammerItTennis
      @HammerItTennis  2 роки тому +1

      When you have the square end on the bottom you get a bump on the bottom of the grip. Both ends being tapered creates the best fit.

  • @alastairkirkland1580
    @alastairkirkland1580 5 років тому

    Have watched quite a few videos and still cannot determine which way up/down the tapered edge goes!! Or does it not matter?

    • @HammerItTennis
      @HammerItTennis  5 років тому +1

      Alastair Kirkland depends on whether you are right handed or left handed and if you’ve undone the grip completely out of the way it is wrapped up in the package. Assuming you are right handed when you take a grip out of the package you have to wrap it with the rest of the grip on the right side so how ever the tamper is is how it has to be.

    Taper on the final wrap should be on the lower edge not the top edge.IMHO.

    • @HammerItTennis
      @HammerItTennis  4 роки тому +1

      Boneshaker if you cut the bottom side of the grip and not the top, the taper of the grip towards the thick part of the grip gets cut off and it won’t fit as nicely against the previous wrap below it. If you cut straight on the top side you preserve the factory grip edge and cover your cut edge with the tape.

    • @HammerItTennis

      Autumn H if you can start the grip you should be able to apply enough pressure that it should hold itself in place. If the handle is really slick foam or plastic you might try lightly using a glue stick to give it some tack. Otherwise take your grip back and get one from Wilson, Babolat or Gamma. Most major brands have adhesive on their replacement grips.
