I just spent two days on a coat pattern, I stopped after the second mock-up feeling like I didn’t know what I was doing. It’s reassuring to see that chaos is a technic! I’m here for it, thanks
I feel the same way. I get frustrated when I encounter issues with a garment I'm making, and it makes me want to give up. But whenever I watch one of Cornelius' videos, I'm less frustrated because I recognize that chaos with sewing projects is just part of the process and I just need to trudge on... and 'tweak alot'.
Wow, this might be the first video that I have watched that has been real about the process of garment sewing. Most videos make it look so easy that it is no wonder many of us get so frustrated with the process (because we start to believe that WE cannot do it if it is not right after the 3rd attempt) that we hang it up. Your explanation with patience and humor was so good. You are a gift to the sewing community and I am joining to learn more from you! BTW, yes, I would love to see a more personal video about your journey in life so far. Thank you!
I'm glad to hear it's relatable but also good for me to hear that I'm also not the only fumbling my way through. I saw that you join as a member, thank you very much. Happy sewing.
"Tweak A LOT."😂 Honestly, this resolved the frustration I often feel when I don't get the right fit after the first fit. Some of the issues you showed in your shirt has been addressed in basic female bodice drafting by Natalie Bray - the bubble at the back neck etc. I guess male clothing patterns are drafted differently from female ones.
I’m so grateful that you made this tutorial. An old injury causes my right shoulder to drop and sit forward, which means that off the rack clothing sits funny and feels uncomfortable to me. I also have numbness and tremors in my right hand. I’ve been wanting to sew my own clothing, but I worry about how to modify patterns to accommodate my needs and also whether or not my hands will even let me sew anymore. You are an inspiration to me to not let my body hold me back from pursuing this craft again. Thank you for making this (and all) of your videos! ❤
Thank you for sharing a bit about yourself. It's great to get to hear from the folks like yourself, watching my content. I hope you do keep on trying and are able to make things fit just as you desire!
I'm so impressed that you are prepared to deal with fit in a personal level. The attention to detail will help so many people to dress in a comfortable manner, removing the reluctance of so many people to wear smart clothes. I would love it if you could one day tackle the "spiral" t-shirt issue that so many people live with. Birdy
what is the spiral t shirt issue? do you mean when you buy crap quality and they've cut it wrong and the neck will not stay lined up with the hem? I hate that if that's what you mean.
I'm not only impressed by the high quality of the content, but also with your PATIENCE hahhahaha You seem so chill having to make so many tweaks, it's actually inspiring :P Thanks for the amazing tutorial as always!!
Another great video. Your awareness of your body and how your garments should fit is inspiring. I remember a video you did 2-years ago where you were drafting either a shirt or bomber jacket pattern for yourself and even then, your keen awareness of how your pattern would need to be altered to achieve a better fit for your specific body was insightful.
Well thank you, I appreciate your positive support. It isn't always easy but I'm trying my best to learn a bit more and improve my skillsets in the world of garment making. Then share them here of course.
Paused at the moment you asked if we want a personal video - that would be nice. Inclusive sewing is something that we need more of. Open talks are real good for inspiration and wisdom. If you're comfortable sharing in a video - I would love to seee. But for now - I'll keep watching! (ADHD problems - id of forgotten if i waited till the end)
Hi, I'm a young professional pattern maker! From experience, many of the fit issues you faced in this video have a "known" origin (like those pulling lines being a sign for the sleeve cap not being high enough). I find it helpful to have one of those old-fashioned sewing books made for home seamstresses: they have a very rich amount of data on fitting and altering ! I have read mine once from back to back and learned many fitting tips. Also I just know to go and look when I have trouble I don't know how to solve like that. Thanks for the amazing and educative videos!
You rock!! What a delightful host and educator you are. Seeing the humility you have for your project has given me patience with mine. Subscribed and thank you! 🌽 🤠
You are adorable! I love your style and work. A more in depth story of your farming accident would be very interesting if you’re willing to share 😻 thank you, I’m just beginning to sew apparel and I’m eager to learn how to alter patterns for a taylored fit. 😊
I saw someone say this, and I found it made this process seem much less daunting, so I'll pass it along. It's all about how _you_ want it to look, not some external concept of perfection. If you think it looks and feels fine, it's fine.
Hi, I’m a beginner to pattern drafting. I want to draft a pattern with my measurements. I am a big busted, small waisted lady with a lil’ slope shoulder. I tried different methods to draft a basic body block. Either the dart is too big, or I have excess fabric at the armhole. Can you please upload a tutorial for basic bodice pattern? Thanks
It is kind of like writing a piece of software. You write, debug, edit, debug, edit, debug, edit...and eventually you get it to do what you want it to do. Then you move onto the next section, wash, rinse, repeat.
Recently, I got a life altering, physically changing diagnosis of Graves’ disease. All the clothes I’ve made so far, since I’ve been treated, I can’t wear anymore 😭. The medications slow the thyroid down to hopefully normal, but make me gain weight, no matter how little I eat. I’m so deflated knowing that if I make clothes to fit now, those clothes will have to go into the pile of clothes I can’t wear. Ugh. Also, as a result of all this medical testing, I’m broke so I can’t buy more fabric to keep making clothes if the clothes won’t fit me anymore. I know it’s a lot easier to alter clothes from bigger to small but not smaller to bigger. I don’t know what to do now.
@@dotschischloh9767 I’m not overweight though, I have gained 19lbs but I’m still underweight for my height. But a different clothes size. I don’t want to make clothes in new sizes because I’m not sure if I will gain more weight., and if I do, I don’t know how much.
It is definitely a process to get the medication, correct. Everyone is so different. Been trying to get my dosages right for 2 years. It is better but now I am cold all the time.
@@dotschischloh9767 Yes, everyone Is different. I’ve heard and read so many horror stories of this journey. So, you’ve been on the medication 2 years or still on it? and are your thyroid numbers in the normal range?
I'm sorry to hear that my friend. Thank you for your vulnerability and sharing it here in the comments. I hope you're able to figure out how to manage and live with it.
How come you're still developing shirt patterns? You've been at this for a while, I would imagine that you've got a master template that has been iterated upon over the years? I don't mean this in a judgmental way, just curious...
You as a good question. I find I learn so much over the course of a year or 2 that I like to start from scratch and apply what I learned. With each iteration, I find my garments ten to fit better.
I just spent two days on a coat pattern, I stopped after the second mock-up feeling like I didn’t know what I was doing. It’s reassuring to see that chaos is a technic! I’m here for it, thanks
I have concluded that we all don't know what we're doing :)

I love your humour! You make trial and error much less intimidating when you show how much you can learn from it!
We're all here humbling our way through life ... and patterns. You got this!
I love the end result. It hangs nicely.
Thank you. 🙏🏻

When the whole t shirt body spirals, but the neck thing is horrible too😊

I love the idea of sewing the seams on the outside instead of turning the shirt inside-out. I struggled with asymmetric fitting, too.
Oh nice, I hope this technique helps you with future drafting projects.
This is such a great video. Very inspiring... I tend to rush into sewing, without doing too much testing.

The greatest secret is tweaking. ALOT 😅

Did you draft your pattern yourself? I find even when I buy indie patterns I have to change them. It’s all part of the process to get a good fit.
Yep, this is fully self-drafted. Everything has to be customized indeed!

I've been waiting for someone to ask!
Wouldn't a tape measure been quicker? In wood working you measure twice, cut once.
Measure twice, cut once also makes plenty sense in sewing :)
