This is great. One of the best analysis of Jekyll and Hyde I’ve found. Absolutely superb story on every level. I use it for helping addicts and alcoholics see the insanity of the sober man who is not seeking a spiritual experience. I really enjoyed this lecture. Well done, thanks for making it available for Free!
Wow, you actually reply!Yes, Bill Wilson refers to an alcoholic being; a ‘real Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’ in the Alcoholics Anoymous text, pg. 21 in the chapter ‘There is a Solution’ Dr. Jekyll is the dry and sober alcoholic, the so called ‘sane’ one who has the manageable life. Mr. Hyde is the insane, uncontrollable, drunkdevil who does absurd ,tragic things when drunk. When he returns to being Dr. Jekyll and lucid moments, swears to never return to being the insane, violent and self destructive,Mr. Hyde. Dr. Jekyll is soon revealed to be the truly ‘insane’ alcoholic because he repeats the experiment over and over,up to compelling his own demise. I find it piercingly definitive for a recovering, recalcitrant, narcissistic alcoholic. It’s such a powerful and beautifully narrated story. I think it is one of the best stories in English lit. Every guy I have worked with through Alcoholics Anoymous ‘Big Book’ and the 12 Steps, thoroughly relates to this story. Even semi-literate guys! I just discovered your channel and instantly subscribed. I’m gonna watch every one of your lectures. What a gift. Thank you.
How much would have 100 Pounds been at that time? Well, it would have been enough to buy 2000 copies of Robert Louis Stevenson's Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. I'm sorry, that was really bad humor and I'll see myself out now. Another enlightening lecture. Thank you, Dr. Masson.
Having written, or at least approved of the will when in the form of Dr. Jekyll, Jekyll must have consciously realized that Hyde could win out and Jekyll could be permanently displaced by Hyde? Is there an alternative explanation?
@@LitProfSorry - yes. 27:20 ... "what we are having portrayed here are not what we 27:21 would call bad men we're dealing with 27:28 the upper crust of Edinburgh Society so we're dealing with lawyers and doctors socially admired individuals ..."

Amazing that you use it for that purpose. I had never thought about that use, but I can entirely imagine it.

The setting is just London, not Edimburgh and London.

He has the mentality of a junkie. He thinks he is in control.
@@LitProf Yes, see it now. It only has to make sense to the junkie. Thanks.
@LitProf so why did he still anticipate his possible demise/disappearance?
Forgive the correction, but we are *not* dealing with "the upper crust of Edinburgh society"; the book is set in London.
You are right! Did I say otherwise?
