  • In this video I introduce myself, explain the purpose for the channel, and share a bit of my story.
I describe my pelvic organ prolapse repair surgery in detail: vaginal hysterectomy, prolapse repairs (for vaginal vault prolapse, cystocele, enterocele, and rectocele), as well as placement of a mid-urethral (TVT) sling, suprapubic catheter, a sacrospinous colpopexy, and perineal/pelvic floor reconstruction. I also explain what led to me needing these repairs and how I knew I needed surgery.
Please see other videos within my channel for advice on choosing a surgeon, tips for your recovery, and daily, monthly, and annual updates during my recovery.

Omg, I am SO thankful this video finally showed up in my recommendations. I've been watching videos regarding this for a few months, but none related to me, like yours is. I'm much older than you, though. I'm 64 years old, & will be having surgery for bladder, uterus, & rectum prolapse, along with a sling you described. I'll be having a hysterectomy. I'm post menopausal (no period in over ten years) so I don't need my uterus. She served me well. I gave birth to 3 sons, who are grown now. I'm almost embarrassed to say, I've been putting surgery off for about ten months. My surgeon said it was OK to do that for now. It's a lot to think about, but it's to the point I'm slowly getting ready to pull the trigger & get surgery set up. You're a God-send! Thank you.

Hi! Thank you for your comment, and I’m so glad you’ve found my videos useful! That’s why I made the channel! My advice would be to pull the trigger and do the surgery!! From what I’ve read and both doctors (surgeons) I’ve seen, the surgery will be even easier at your age (only because you shared it). They say that women your age have far less nerve endings in that area and it’ll be way less painful. You’ll have so much relief and be done dealing with the prolapses, however you have been. Also, even if there is no other benefit, it’s been so nice not to pee my pants when I laugh, sneeze, or jump!! Haha. Email me at personalprolapsestory@gmail.com if you have any questions. Happy to answer!

This is the BEST video about what this surgery and recovery is like. I have searched the internet about what this surgery, post operatively, is really like.
Your videos are so helpful and honest. Especially ideas about things to have on hand when you have surgery, how important it is to take it easy, and speak up for yourself.
You are a blessing to all of the rest of us. I'm an RN, have had 4 children and have tried everything NOT to have this procedure done for many years. I've done millions of kagals and everything else physical therapy recommends. I also am very active and not incontinent. But things keep getting worse, so at 80 years young I've been cleared for surgery next week. All I can say is THANK YOU for your candor and love to the rest of us. God bless you and your family.

I’m so glad you found my channel helpful!! I couldn’t find the info I was looking for before my surgery, so I decided to create it myself. I have heard from so many women. I’m glad it has helped them, but it has also helped me feel less alone. I hope you check out more of my videos to be as informed as possible before and after. I’ll be doing a 3 year update and a specific video about urge incontinence I’ve been struggling with, soon. Stay tuned and good luck with your procedures. I’ll be praying for you!

Thank you for posting your story. I had a vaginal hysterectomy, rectocele, cystocele, and bladder sling on Friday. Your first delivery sounds alot like mine. Vacuum, forceps, episiotomy. He was almost 9 pounds. Then 6 years later I had 6 and 7 pound twins vaginally. I'm 51 and had my first son at 28 so Ive been "wrecked" down there for a while. I am 2 days post op. I've been watching your videos, and they are very helpful. Thank you again.

Your videos are exactly what I have been looking for. I will be having the exact same procedures you had done in 9 days. Your story is my story to a tee. Hearing you talk about the Dr. encounters and your whole process was like reliving my appointments and experiences throughout this journey. It is comforting to know that my decisions through this are the best options and the dr I choose is obviously the right one just by your testimony. I will be emailing your channel email with my story and maybe some questions. Thanks again for these videos they truly were all I needed to see, too bad it took lots of research and wasted time before I came across them.

Thank you for these videos!! I’m sooooo tired of these nurses and drs. So many of them did the same thing to me!!
For my first baby- they insisted that I do balloon to induce. Then insisted that they do vacuum auctions. Baby’s heart rate dropped. Like yourself, once baby’s heart rate dropped they told me they didn’t care about mom at the point and that it’s about baby only. They truly do not care nor do they tell you that what they are doing is going to cause you sooooo many issues in the end. Soooo many tears. So much sadness. Of course you’ll never be the exact same after having a baby but I knew my vagina was completely ruined and different and I had never heard any friends talk about them having these certain issues that I was having. By making me do the balloon and not even allowing me to PUSH and just suctioned my baby out they caused my to have a tear. First baby and probably only baby. I’m so angry. It’s very frustrating and not right that they don’t even tell you any of this stuff. The only let me push 1 TIME!!!! I remember leaving and crying and telling my fiancé that I felt like I got taken away of my opportunity to have a normal birthing experience bc I wasn’t even allowed to even try to push. It was my first baby. I had no idea. I *thought* I was being taken care of and in good hands. Baby girl just turned a year old (14months old) and I’ve done pelvic floor therapy etc. and I was told that I do have prolapse. I’m 28. Baby weighed exactly 7lbs. HOW IN THE HELL DOES THIS HAPPEN unless your dealing with people that truly just do not care about you aka THESE DRS AND NURSES these days. And after birth I had so many issues, even PPD and just like you, I was dismissed. I was told I was normal. In fact, you will not even believe this!!! I was never even checked after birthing my baby. I went to 6 week appointment and was asked how I was and bc I was “ok” I didn’t need to be checked apparently. Funny bc 14 months later I just found out that I did have vaginal prolapse. It’s truly sickening. I wish I could sue them bc it’s horrible what they did.
Glad I’m not alone but I’m very sad that they ruined my vagina area. I’ve been told so many of the same things just like you. I am so glad to hear someone talk about my exact problem(s). Again, I’m really sorry you’re going through this. I want 1 more child but I’m traumatized now and wonder what would even happen to my vagina if I freaking had another one. Ughhhh 😢

Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. I’m currently 9 weeks post op with an anterior sling posterior repair and hysterectomy. I’m 67 so we’ll past childbearing years. You are so right that there is so little out there about this surgery. Everything thing says you’ll be healed in 4 to 6 weeks but my saving grace was a neighbour who told me recovery will take as long as you need it to. I haven’t watched your other videos yet but one thing my Kinesiologist told me is that I have to get Pelvic Physiotherapy, interesting that was not recommended to me at the hospital or by my surgeon. I have my initial assessment with a pelvic physiotherapist next week and hoping that they will get me up and moving more. Looking forward to watching the rest of your videos.

Hi! I definitely recommend pelvic floor physical therapy after any type of surgery like this. The surgeons often do not recommend it, and will even say you don’t need it when you ask. They are typically thinking about the type of physical therapy that helps repair a weak pelvic floor. But you will likely have the opposite problem going forward. You will have hypertonic muscles. If you watch my most recent videos(the 2 year Update and misconceptions videos) I talked about this. Good luck!!

I too had a bad birthing process with my second child ( midwife told me to keep pushing in-between contractions resulting in immediate prolapse that wasn't investigated thoroughly -- i also tore with the first baby's big head then stitched only on the outside). It has been 30 years ,now I hope to be fixed properly so I can toilet normally!.🎉

Thanks for sharing. Im 37 and getting ready for all these surgeries and horrified and scared everything will change.
I also never had endo or other reproductive issues. Just 3 babies. First son at 25 as well and that's when it all started. He was upside down so got stuck on public bone. He was stuck forever and they did a vacuum that popped off, did forcepts and tearing. He was 7lb 8 oz. It was a horror story to keep it short. It sounds scary identical to your story. I did consult an attorney firm for malpractice but seemed too hard to prove and magically the nurse who was criticizing him during labor's notes all disappeared from record.
My second son was 7 years later with tears and stitches. Last baby was no issues. Definitely all was from first baby and of course they don't tell you about prolapse. They don't want you to know what they screwed up.
Again thanks for sharing. I feel so old having to go through this. I cried when they said I needed a hysterectomy. I didn't want more kids but I didn't want to swear on that for 10 years. Devastating still and Im worried sex will never be the same.

Thanks for telling your story! Had a similar delivery as yours. 39 hour labor, forceps and an episiotomy tore me all up. Bladder prolapse when she was 8 weeks old. Kegels helped me very well for 23 years but no longer work and it has prolapsed again. OBGYN doesn’t recommend surgery. Wants me to try PT and plastic devices, but at 53 I’m doubtful that these will be helpful to me long term. I think that for me, getting the surgery is the road that I want to go down. I don’t want to this prolapse to get worse and frankly I feel that it will inevitably will. It’s not painful but it is a bit uncomfortable and it is interfering with my sex life with my husband. I’m calling it getting a Mommy Makeover the hard way!

Elaine, thanks for reaching out. Good luck with your surgery. I don’t think you’ll regret it, and within a few weeks, will be glad you took the leap. Also, the pain depends on your age. My surgeon explained that younger women have more pain because they have more nerve endings in that area. Over time, many of those start to numb or die off. So that works in favor of older women. I’m not sure of your age, but keep it in mind. Please email me if you have any questions, and be sure to check out my recovery tips and products videos in the meantime. Hello,
I’m sorry you’re facing this. I’m no doctor, but in most cases, removal of the uterus is best practice to treat and prevent prolapse. But… only do that if you’re sure you’re done having babies. If not, things can be repaired with it intact. I’ve loved having no periods, if it’s any consolation!

    There is a Physical Therapist
on youtube her channel is Jessica Valant Pilates she had very much similar surgery to yours a few years ago. Her story of prolapse and hysterectomy is what I found before my surgery 3 weeks ago. I listened to your story I too had 3 prolapses and hysterectomy ovaries are still there. However my recovery was not in the least as painful as yours and i’m sorry you went through that. All experiences are different. But eventually we’ll all heal.

    • @personalprolapsestory
      @personalprolapsestory  Рік тому

Yes! Jessica’s videos were a good resource for me before my surgery, even though she didn’t have the same things done as me. I think that every surgery must be different, and my recovery was a bit more difficult because all of my repairs were done with stitches and native tissue. Mesh was not used, other than a very tiny piece for my stress incontinence repair. Many doctors want to put a Band-Aid on things, by just putting large pieces of mess in there to hold up the organs. That’s not a long-term fix, though, and causes women a lot of issues down the road.

My urogyno said they won’t use native tissue, only mesh. I don’t want mesh all over down below (even the thin strips as she described) so I will not have the surgery at this point. But I am also needing some kind of help. I have had 6 children, the last being twins, over a 10
Year period. The twins are now about to be 4. I have 3 prolapses, need a hysterectomy due to the prolapse and short cycles/excessive bleeding.
The doctor recommends rectocele, cystocele, hysterectomy (leave ovaries), sacrocolpopexy as well.
My story is long as well. But after the twins were about 1 year old. I started to ask questions about what was going on down below. I went to the dr several times over a year (checked for prolapse at my request) before the right person checked me well and found the three prolapses.

Hello. I am sorry you are facing the struggles that you are. It is not fun for anyone, and definitely takes a toll on your mental and emotional health. I encourage you to not be afraid of mesh completely. As I said, the mesh that is causing women complications, has been pulled from the market. If only thin strips of mesh are used, you are probably in good hands. Remember, I have some mesh too. But, my mesh is only used for my urinary incontinence Sling. At least to the best of my understanding. I encourage you to continue doing research, to ensure that you find the best surgeon possible in your area. Remember to look for one who is a vaginal surgeon, not a urogynecologist. I truly believe there is a difference in care, and there certainly is in the way that they handle these procedures. Vaginal surgeons tend to use native tissue and do a lot more repairs by hand/with stitches. You will not regret the hysterectomy. As I said in the a few of my videos, that was absolutely nothing compared to the repairs that I had done inside and on my perineum. Please don’t be afraid of surgery, just be sure that you make the most informed decision about who does it. Feel free to reach out via email if you have any specific questions, at personalprolapsestory@gmail.com. Good luck! be sure to check out my video about some tips for choosing the right surgeon.

I’m day 1 recovery having had the EXACT same surgery. The pain is horrendous! One question though, obviously sex with my husband has been uncomfortable and painful. How is it after 6 weeks? Is it better? Any feeling lost?

I had the surgery 10 month ago. No feeling lost for sure, only better. It takes months and months to heal. Really all the way up to a year! Maybe beyond. I know this, my bladder feels better than it did even 2-4 months ago. It all takes time!

I’ve had 7 babies. I had the leaking issue but it was like a stupid amount. Two years ago it evolved into voiding issues that ended me up in the ER having to have a catheter put in and wearing it for week. Been having issues since and self cathing is not working because instead of the urethra being straight mine has a lot of curves. I have adenomyosis to top it off. I could either do the in office device or do the surgery that will require a hysterectomy to fix the prolapse. Im going choose the surgery route. My gynecologist is having me try birth control to control the adenomyosis and she had said that if that doesn’t work then we would need to do a partial hysterectomy. Figured that doing the surgery would get rid of the adenomyosis and fix the prolapse. Just wasn’t sure if there was anyone out there that also have the voiding issues and had the procedure and if it fixed the issue or not. I know my doctor said that there is no guarantee that it would fix my bladder issue. Especially, since it could also be a nerve issue in my spine. I have numbness, muscle weakness and a bunch of neurological problems that I have multiple doctors trying to figure out. Thank-you, for your videos. It is a blessing.

Hi. There is SO much to respond to here. It sounds like your situation is absolutely miserable. I am so sorry to hear you are going through that, but I’m thankful that you reached out. I certainly urge you to find an excellent surgeon and get your issues taken care of. I can’t imagine living with what you are. I had never heard of adenomyosis. I did not have that. I honestly had a perfect female reproductive system. Other than all of my organs were falling out. Haha. I did have a kinked urethra, as you are describing. That in itself could be causing your issues with voiding, but the prolapses can absolutely cause that too. If all of the other organs have fallen down and are compressing your bladder, it is totally understandable that you would have a problem emptying it. I highly suggest that you find a good vaginal surgeon or a urogynecologist and request that you have a urodynamic study done. That will tell them exactly what is going on with your urinary issues, and a thorough vaginal exam should tell them exactly which of your organs have dropped. One thing you mentioned that I wanted to comment on was the issues that you think you might be having with your spine/numbness/tingling. I did not know this before my surgery, but I found out afterward, that prolapsed pelvic organs can compress nerves in your pelvic floor that can cause similar issues to what you are describing in your low back, hips, legs, and toes/feet. I am wondering if the prolapses are causing ALL of your issues. Most MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS ARE JUST NOT TRAINED TO APPROPRIATELY TO PUT THE PIECES OF THE PUZZLE TOGETHER. I’VE LEARNED IN DOING MY OWN RESEARCH THAT MANY DOCTORS DO NOT EVEN REALIZE THAT PELVIC ORGAN PROLAPSE CAN AFFECT THE Pudenal NERVE, WHICH RUNS DOWN YOUR LEGS, NEAR YOUR TAILBONE AND RECTUM, AND TOWARD YOUR HIPS. EVEN AFTER MY SURGERY, MY PUDendal NERVE WAS CAUSING ME ALL KINDS OF ISSUES BECAUSE OF SCAR TISSUE AND ME DOING WORKOUTS THAT WERE IRRITATING MY PELVIC FLOOR MUSCLES AND CAUSING SWELLING. FEEL FREE TO EMAIL ME AND WE CAN HAVE A MORE SPECIFIC DISCUSSION. Personalprolapsestory@gmail.com

@@personalprolapsestory , I go in March 12th for surgery. Pretty nervous about the full hysterectomy on top of fixing everything else. Adenomyosis is like the evil twin to endometriosis. It just grows on the inside of my uterus instead of the outside. I have an MRI on Monday for my upper back to my brain. They think that there might possibly be a tumor that’s causing the bone pain, numbness, and the severe muscle weakness in my legs, lower abdominal muscles, arms and hands. My primary doctor is referring me to rheumatologist since my inflammation markers are extremely high and he doesn’t know what to make of my blood test results. I’ve been dealing with all of this and the constant headaches and vision issues for 7 years now. I had asked the uro gynecologist if the numbness was related to the prolapse but he had said no that it has to be something neurological in my spine somewhere. Im just really praying that this is the year for answers and healing. I keep trying to research to try to figure out what this could be. Apparently, the nurse of my neuro ophthalmologist said that MS can’t be ruled out until a spinal tap is done. It just kind of sucks when the tests for Cushing’s, sjogrens, and lupus is negative. It’s no fun when you can’t drive at night and you need help standing and climbing up stairs.

Bless you! That’s so much! I hope you get answers soon! We had an MRI to rule out MS, as well as a brain tumor because of my constant headaches. Mine was completely normal. It gives me a lot of peace of mind though. Good luck with all of this! You will be in my prayers
