    There really needs to be a film on Big George's life. First act could be the rise, ending with Zaire. Second act would be the descent into despair and finding peace through God. Third act would obviously be the climb back to the top, and the short right hand that made history.

    • @christopherpeterson199
      @christopherpeterson199 10 років тому +34

      Yeah look at George's arms, they're like fucking tree trunks. George was a hard puncher the first time around but I'd argue Foreman was an even bigger puncher in his comeback. He was just so fat, slow and ponderous good fighters could dance rings around him but if he ever landed something big and flush, look out. Moorer ate the old Foreman 1-2 late in the fight. Hell the second 1-2 the right hand came in so hard it split his lip causing Moorer to just bleed like crazy when he went down. George Foreman in my mind is probably the second or third hardest punching fighter of all-time, with #1 being Earnie Shavers. Earnie was 6'1" and he could absolutely level a guy with a single punch, watch his knockdown of Larry Holmes in their second fight. Stamina and general defensive problems kept Earnie from being a champion but watching some of his old fights the guy had dynamite in his right hand!

    • @josedejesus765
      @josedejesus765 10 років тому +8

      Foremon did say shavers hit him the hardest. Espn ranked him as the hardest hitter that's why I stated that. It's crazy cuz he didn't look like he was putting anything behind those punches but damn they were packing a lot of power.

    • @christopherpeterson199
      @christopherpeterson199 10 років тому +9

      Yeah, I think George is at least #2 of all-time. What's interesting about George is that in his comeback he was so slow he had to club people to knock them out and still managed to knock out several fighters, most of who sucked but still he did win spectacularly.

    • @josedejesus765
      @josedejesus765 10 років тому +16

      Hardest hitter is either Foreman or Earnie Shavers (who he never fought, so couldn't compare). Some people who had the joy of fighting both of them say Shavers hit harder, but it's a mute point. Point is, power is the last thing to go, so don't stand toe to toe with one of if not the best power punchers.
      Also want to give credit to Cooney (the white guy Foreman knocked out in 4 minutes before the Holyfield fight). 4 minutes with Cooney was enough for Foreman to put him as one of the top 3 hardest punchers he faced or trained with.

    You gotta love Big George - he did it for every man who is over the hill and past his prime but still has a dream and still goes on fighting for some respect. In this fight, George finally redeemed himself in the eyes of the world for the humiliation he suffered in Zaire a decade earlier. This was one for the ages.

    • @Psalmanazar1
      @Psalmanazar1 8 років тому +35

      +Steven Yourke I agree, and it's even better: that humiliation in Zaire was actually two decades earlier. This was 1994, the Rumble in the Jungle was 1974. It's just unbelievable that he was able to (a) win a championship 20 years after losing his first one, and (b) completely leave boxing for a 10-year period in between. Boxing is a young man's game, and is incredibly grueling. A year off is too long for most people.

    I used to wonder why boxers lift their head after a couple seconds of being down, but not do everything they can to get up and beat the count (an example of this is 41:45). But having been knocked out playing football, I can tell you why. When a person gets knocked out, they usually only stay out for a split-second, but the reason they don't hop back up is because it takes about 10 seconds just to remember where you are and what's going on. By the time Michael Moore regained conscience, and spent about 10 seconds remembering who and where he was and what was happening, it was too late to beat the count. That's what happens 9/10 when a boxer get's knocked out, and it's why they don't hop back to their feet.

    This really highlights how the 60s and 70s were the golden era of boxing, one of its foremost personalities would come back over 20 years later and the age of 45 and reclaim the Heavyweight Championship of the World, not just for him, but for his generation. Moorer said Foreman "got lucky" with those 1-2 punches, that Foreman couldn't have planned this fight as he said he did after the fight.
    But you don't become heavyweight champion of the world at age 45 by just "getting lucky". Moorer you were so full of yourself, you underestimated old George's experience. Plus, luck in the end is not entirely random, it is mastered so that when you take the risks it will work your way. That's definitely experience, not just "random things happening in your opponent's favor". Specially when you didn't obey your corner, when it was needed.

Twist the head two ways in a split second, do this twice within three seconds. Try it on a boxing bag. George got the timing and distance pretty right on the first one-two and spot on on the second. Look at the size of George's hands arms shoulders and back, plus he is punching downwards, with his natural power getting hit by him is like getting hit in the face by a stack of cinder blocks

    1. Ted Atlas, Moorer coach, is a genius one. He figured out George completely what George planed to set up.
    2. Big George is a real boxing legends same par with Ali or Joe louis. His powerful punches are incredible.
    Moore also deserved some credit as he is very few men in this planet to stand and exchange punches with Foreman for almost 10 rounds.
    3. One of TV commentators is very foolish and insulted Foreman almost all the time like antique, he landed less in round 9 only 35 from normal 50 to 60 in the other rounds, he will return home with swollen eyes, Moorer winning jabs, after round 9 I worry about George health and numerous idiotic comments. When Foreman knocked out his hero, he changed his word and pretended to praise the greatness of antique.
    4. No clinch at all for this fair game. Moorer is more inexperienced than others to not hold or clinch when he hurted but instinctly tried to revenge and hurt Foreman in return. That's it. The game is over and he became ex champ.
    5. Boxing did not simply count by who landing or throwing punches more. U have to look at who lands more heavy or numb punches more as well as who look more stronger or freshy or who is more wobby or weaker to give the points.
    In this case Moorer won't lead Foreman too far as a commentator thought.

    You can hear the difference between George’s punches Landing before round 10 and during round 10. That dude can hit freakin haaaaard. Forced a prime Holyfield to a decision.

      Justin Allison It never made a ton of sense for Tyson to fight Foreman. Foreman was still unranked and fighting joke fighters fresh off the couch when Tyson lost the title to Douglas, and by the time Tyson got out of prison and started fighting again Foreman had already won the title back.
      Contrary to popular opinion, fighters rarely actively duck other fighters. They take whatever fight pays the most money with the least risk.

      Raul Groom True. Like saying Foreman ducked Holmes. If Holmes had won the belt, Forman would have demolished him to get it.

    Big George....Old school, tough....You notice that George answers and talks with Dundee between rounds. Moorer barely acknowledges Atlas is in the ring....Old School wins! Big George is great!!

    Foreman said he was setting Moorer up for one power shot. Moorer's trainer told him Foreman was trying to set him up for one power shot. Yet, Moorer refuses to accept this fact and said Foreman was just lucky. Nah...you were set up young fella. If Moorer had listened to his trainer...he woulda won.

    love it when Lampley and company talk big for round after round....and then they have to do a 180. licking Atlas' butt, talking about the slow hands of big George, don't understand why George never reminded "old grey" every time they disagreed when calling fights together. like when George was reminding Lampley and "old grey" that although Lewis was ahead against Holyfield
    in the second fight, that you can't count Holyfield out and it was a much closer fight than they were insisting it was. George should have replied when "old grey" said "George, he (Holyfield) hasn't been able to hurt Lewis in any way" ...(.he couldn't stand that George was pulling for Holyfield.) George should have said..."don't you remember when you counted me out against Moorer?" that would have been awesome. "old grey" is Larry Merchant. only time I agreed with Larry Merchant is when he stood up to Mayweather Jr.....but I wasn't crazy about Ferdie Pacheco either. what do I have against commentators? 😊

    Been watching boxing since Mohamed Ali was Cassius Clay and Foreman is one of about 5 or 6 punchers I would absolutely not want to be hit by. His short right hand is ranked #1 of the top 20 most dangerous punches in boxing history. Mike Tyson's right uppercut was ranked #7 and I wouldn't want hit with it either.

    Moorer was such a mediocre champion. Holyfield crushed him in their rematch and would have won the first fight if not for Holyfield's heart condition/shoulder problems. Not surprised George busted his ass. So glad he did too. Moorer was bad for the sport of boxing and had a shit attitude for a guy who had minimal talent.

    • @alanspurlock
      @alanspurlock 9 років тому

      ***** i disagree. moorer was a one handed fighter. an incomplete skill set. often smaller boxers have awsome power. i have a feeling that we will see a credible heavyweight champ at around 210lbs in the next 15 years. for instance, if kovalev gained 30 lbs. he would b considered a big puncher in the heavyweight division as well.

    • @alanspurlock
      @alanspurlock 9 років тому +1

      david haye had good power. i am speaking of a guy who is an in shape 205-210lbs. not necessarily coming from the lighter divisions. rj never really belonged in the heavyweight division. i just think what is old will become new again. after 20 years of large fighter dominance of the diviision eventually we will see a guy come along that will light up the gigantic 6'6 fighters. when it happens, he will be very popular.

    Moorer never saw the right hand coming. Foreman delivering the classic one two punch combination --> jab/right hand. Moorer stood right in front of George and failed to move his head and slip or successfully block the jab, and he never saw the right hand Foreman threw that followed right behind it. 41:46 Lights out.
