ah man I just love these giant, chunky American diesels from the late 20th Century. They're always covered in soot and just trundle their way along. Very utilitarian and cool
Good to know that one U34CH got preserved and cosmetically rebuilt. I never saw one in operation, but am happy to know that any iconic railroad equipment has been preserved.
Slight correction: the U30C was a direct competitor to EMD's SD40. The Dash 2 line wasn't introduced until 1972 and GE would respond first with the "XR" (for eXtra Reliability) series of U-Boats and then the Dash 7 series in 1976.
A well-done video! If what I've read is true some NJ Transit crews thought the U34CH's were actually a little too much locomotive for the job but no matter, they certainly WERE impressive. It's been said the rumbling growl of a U34CH is unforgettable! Hopefully the URHS can get that old U-Boat running again. They say they have every reason to hope so.
Great video and history. Just FYI, that's my photo of 3365 at ua-cam.com/video/c-qacEj3bBQ/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared&t=247 -- is there any way you could provide attribution? (I'm only asking because the copyright folks tell me that if I don't say anything, folks will think my photo is in the public domain (which it isn't). Thanks!
