  • Do you have a baby or a toddler that you HATE giving medicine to? In this video I'll share some tips I've learned over my years as a pediatric nurse to make the medicine giving process, a less emotional one. I have tips for both babies and toddlers. I'll also offer some advice on what to avoid, and what to do if they throw up their medicine.
    What tips do you have for getting your little one to take their medicine? Let me know!

    Good lord Nurse Liz.....THANK YOU! 17 yr RN, all adult ICU, TICU, SICU and now ED nursing. My years of critical care experience helps for sure, but even 6 years deep into the ED setting I am generally uncomfortable with the little humans simply 2dary to the fact that I am not a mother and have so little experience. I was an EMT and later a Medic before nursing and therefore had some peds experience and have been PALS certified for decades-- but other than pediatric clinicals back in school and those PALS re-certss, I have had no other pedi experience. To this day I am more comfortable with pediatric IV starts and the awful scenarios of pediatric resuscitation than I am administering medications to infants--or god forbid--the formidable 3-going-on-30 year old toddler!! I am not exaggerating at all in saying that your 11 minute video gave me more good tips than 20+ years in emergency and critical care nursing.' I am going to browse your videos now in hopes of finding other good tips in dealing with the pediatric patient. I am a great "go-to" nurse for difficult IV starts and am often asked to start a line for infants and toddlers. While my clinical skills r/t the insertion of the catheter itself are good---the approach and the care of the patient is where I imagine a lot of us nurses who lack experience with toddlers could use. All too often in the emergent setting--the tolerance of the patient to the procedure is secondary to the importance of completing the task....so if we ill-equipped ED nurses cannot quickly calm a sick child---we move straight to the papoose board to get it done. The same can be said for many invasive procedures, straight cath UAs, sutures. I've browsed content on these matters---and most good practice videos or articles come from unicorn-and-fairy-land pediatric specialty emergency medical centers where all this specialized equipment and staff exist. For many a busy city ER like ours, those resources do not exist. Yet we still need to care for, and stabilize these patients so we can then ship them to the children's hospital. I will be looking forward to learning more. Many thanks.

      Wow thank you so much for the super thoughtful reply! You sound like an AMAZING asset to your ER! I have a video on tips for pediatrics, but I think that might be it in terms of peds. Thanks so much for the love!

    Thanks for sharing. I’m having problems giving my 18 month old daughter her multivitamin with iron. She use to be fine with it but now lately she doesn’t want it. I try to give her something to distract her but it doesn’t work. Any suggestions?

    • @NurseLiz
      @NurseLiz  3 роки тому +1

      They get so clever around that age. Also the multi with iron tastes BAD and can make their tummies upset so she probably isn't a huge fan. If she has to take it you may have to hold her down and hold her chin shut until she swallows. Often around that age it gets really tricky because they catch on really quik to your tricks. good luck!

    Hey Liz, this is awesome, thank you! We have to give our son 3.5ml + 2ml of different meds twice a day, he is one and he holds it in his mouth and sometimes gargles it and spits it out. as it is so regular he knows the drill, what tips do you have? there are no pill alternatives sadly, it is the twice daily nightmare in our house :(

    • @NurseLiz
      @NurseLiz  4 роки тому +1

      Oof. So this is totally going to vary based on your parenting style. When I've had to give my daughter medicine that was not negotiable we had a few rough days where I held my finger under her jaw to keep her mouth closed until she swallowed. She was not a happy camper. But I tried to stay super calm and after 2 days she got the memo and it got easier. Not ideal, but worked eventually. Many parents of the kids I worked with had to implement a similar method since for their kid it wasn't optional. Best of luck with everything

    How to give liquid medicine to 9 months old baby if he keep medicine in mouth only and does not swallow. Spitting back medicine. Crying and not opening mouth

    • @NurseLiz
      @NurseLiz  4 роки тому +2

      It just depends on how necessary the medicine is. If they have to get it, sometimes you have to pry their mouth open then hold their mouth shut. Its not fun, but if they absolutely need it, you gotta do what you gotta do.

    • @NurseLiz
      @NurseLiz  5 років тому

      Mix it with ice cream?? Or something sweet. And hide the bottle! Just present the “concoction”. Good luck. That is so so challenging

    • @shawnharry3454
      @shawnharry3454 2 роки тому

      I get the same problem. My son wud be 2 years less than a month and it’s worse than how u described. He LITERALLY has to be restrained from head to feet (yes hands included), he locks his jaw, to open it u either have to block his nose or squeeze his cheeks. Yes I know it sounds inhumane but I honestly don’t know any other way. Even when we successfully get the medicine to enter his mouth he IMMEDIATELY spits it out. Also if by some miracle the medicine is consumed, he gets so hysterical that he causes himself to vomit on demand. All this is happening with a lot of fighting, biting, scratching and of course crying. I’m in the hospital right now making this comment and nurses are passing and peeping in the room to make sure he isn’t being tortured or murdered. Saddest part about all this is that I’m not even exaggerating in the slightest. Please help me someone.
      PS: I’ve tried mixing it with water, juice, his formula and basically anything I know he likes to eat/drink, however nothing worked.

      Ugh I'm so sorry she's being tricky! Sometimes at work we would squirt it in and then hold our fingers under their chins so they couldnt open their mouth if they really needed the medication. Never fun, but gets the job done if its a must. Best of luck, that is never fun!

    • @GeneralCreativeZone
      @GeneralCreativeZone 5 років тому +3

      For now, she's feeling pretty well, I tried a new method that when she slept I silently raised her head supporting the whole backbone and gave the medicines when she was sleeping, It was not a big issue then, just a little bit of fight, but that was after swallowing the medicine. and I waited for her to sleep again for another medicine.

    • @Sche-D

      @@NurseLiz I am going to try the thumb under the chin, but my 9 month old will most likely vomit it up. The problem is that it's antibiotics & if shes not getting it in, shes not finishing the coarse. She has to take it with food & after the whole ordeal she doesnt want e=anything near her, barely her dummy, so trying to give again AND trying to get her to eat food, will be impossible.

      @NurseLiz  3 роки тому

      It's safe, but if you mix it in the bottle and they don't drink the whole thing, it's impossible to know if they get the full dose, so I recommend mixing it in the milk in a syringe and then giving it to baby through that to ensure they get the full dose.
