I buy books based on UA-camr recommendations but sometimes while reading I feel the book isn't good, or I question my taste or understanding How can I ensure the books I buy are worth it?

finally, something to disagree with you on. in general, lot of the older SF books are short on character development and things like that. more around interesting topics and concepts. the ones covered in the book like GP hull, stasis field, booster spice, Pierson's puppeteer etc. are developed as part of Niven's Known Space series. regardless, each reader is entitled to his/her review. just finished reading Stephenson's Seveneves - do check it out if not read already.

You are acting as if there's some objective metric by which you can judge whether or not you will like a story or not.
Same case with Hyperion, another SciFi “classic” where women character is only sexual. It was a Hugo award winner as well.
